Sakurai Y: Law, Autonomy, and
Vulnerability

Law, Autonomy, and Vulnerability

Supporting and Protecting Older Adults in Japan

Kunstautonomie

You may not have been taught this, but the best way to lead a team is to step back and let them take the reins. The workforce is changing, and many managers, newly promoted and having received no training in how to lead their teams, end up creating a culture in which their teams are reliant on them to function, preventing them from taking ownership of their work. Additionally, employees are more conscious of their value than ever before, and after the pandemic, they've had access to a level of flexibility that they're not willing to give up. In this cocktail of conflicting demands, managers are lost, and it's not their fault. Let Them Lead provides you with an unconventional toolbox of techniques and strategies to help you develop your own management style, one that is tailored specifically to the new workforce. Once you have that, you'll understand how to cultivate a team that wants to be there - whether they're working from home or in person. You'll learn to stop answering all the questions and start leading a team that actually cares. Themes include: leadership mindset, hybrid team dynamics, people-first culture, strategic management, autonomy and ownership, modern workforce engagement

'Addictive writing wrapped up in a compelling page turner that makes you deeply think and feel'YOMI ADEGOKE'An incisive new voice in fiction' COCO MELLORSWe give celebrities a power they don't deserve. Power they haven't earned. What happens when they exploit it?Imagine you've just spent the night with the most famous man on the planet. Except you don't quite remember it. What happens next changes everything.Gold Rush is a story about consent, celebrity culture, and trying to figure out where women fit in a world that consistently devalues and disrespects their bodies.'Powerful, nuanced, richly drawn and skilfully done, Gold rush will stay with me for a long time'LAUREN BRAVO

NomosTextbook

The textbook offers readers a clear and engaging entry point into the central questions of bioethics. It demonstrates how ethical principles such as autonomy, dignity, justice, and human rights can be applied to contemporary medical, technological, and social challenges. Through classical and modern case studies, it provides methodological clarity and argumentative confidence in addressing moral dilemmas - from patient autonomy and global justice to disability and aging ethics. The textbook is aimed at students, teachers, and professionals in philosophy, medicine, ethics, law, and public policy.

An Opinionated Introduction

Bioethics

A stunning novel from the acclaimed young Irish poet Seán Hewitt, a luminous and intensely evocative portrayal of two teeneagers bonding with each other over one heady, transformative year. "[Open, Heaven] is a searching novel orbiting pleasure, loss, and the ecstatic release of both; which is to say it’s a novel about time. Which is to say it’s a novel about us." —Kaveh Akbar, author of Martyr! Set in a remote village in the north of England, Open, Heaven unfolds over the course of one year in which two teenage boys meet and transform each other’s lives. James—a sheltered, shy sixteen-year-old—is alone in his newly discovered sexuality, full of an unruly desire but entirely inexperienced. As he is beginning to understand himself and his longings, he also realizes how his feelings threaten to separate him from his family and the rural community he has grown up in. He dreams of another life, fantasizing about what lies beyond the village’s leaf-ribboned boundaries, beyond his reach: autonomy, tenderness, sex. Then, in the autumn of 2002, he meets Luke, a slightly older boy, handsome, unkempt, who comes with a reputation for danger. Abandoned by his parents—his father imprisoned, and his mother having moved to France for another man—Luke has been sent to live with his aunt and uncle on their farm just outside the village. James is immediately drawn to him "like the pull a fire makes on the air, dragging things into it and blazing them into its hot, white centre," drawn to this boy who is beautiful and impulsive, charismatic, troubled. But underneath Luke’s bravado is a deep wound—a longing for the love of his father and for the stability of family life. Open, Heaven is a novel about desire, yearning, and the terror of first love. With the striking economy and lyricism that animate his work as a poet, Hewitt has written a mesmerizing hymn to boyhood, sensuality, and love in all its forms.

Mike Lynch was a maverick outsider in the British business world. From humble beginnings, Lynch rose to become one of the UK's richest men, selling his home-grown enterprise software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for over £11bn in 2011. The sale triggered one of the biggest fraud cases in Silicon Valley history, as HP accused him of cooking the company's books. Lynch was sent to the US in handcuffs, his reputation in tatters - but was acquitted by a US jury, and returned home a free man. Tragically, his second chance at life was snatched away even as he was celebrating his freedom. In a freak accident, his yacht sunk off the coast of northern Sicily in August 2024, taking the lives of Lynch, his daughter and five others. Shockingly, the co-defendant in the US trial, Autonomy accountant Stephen Chamberlain, was killed hours before Lynch, hit by a car in Cambridge. It was almost thirteen years to the day since the deal between HP and Autonomy was signed. Drawing on extensive research and exclusive access to key sources, The Curious Case of Mike Lynch follows the billionaire's dramatic rise and fall and, finally, his untimely and tragic death. It's a thrilling story of money, power and deception, taking readers into a high-stakes world of corporate subterfuge and rivalries, zigzagging through the hallowed confines of Cambridge across the cut-throat streets of the City of London to Silicon Valley. In this pacy, no-holds barred investigation into one of the most fascinating men in the history of British business, award-winning Times journalist Katie Prescott reflects on Lynch's legacy, outlining lessons from a truly unique life which serve as both a warning and inspiration for us all.
