Genealogies explores the circulation of motifs--mainly the human face--in Schütte's works, transposed from one medium to another. Caricatured, sometimes abused and always in motion, Schütte's anthropomorphic figures and busts come to life in clay, wax, ceramics, glass, steel or bronze, all anchored in his preparatory drawings and portrait sketches. This catalog analyzes the artist's relationship between paper and sculpture, the historical iconography of his signature faces and his creative process. The work of photographer Peter Hujar defined downtown New York in the 1970s and 1980s. Paul Thek was an American sculptor and painter. Hujar and Thek met in 1956 and shared a strong intellectual and artistic connection that influenced the work of both artists. The Wonderful World That Almost Was follows the development of the intense friendship - and romance - between them, from their first encounter in Miami to the painful end of their friendship in the mid-1970s. It was during that period that Hujar and Thek produced some of their most famous and significant works, and this biography traces the ways in which these artists' work directly and indirectly influenced both one another and the wider cultural sphere, and features the large circle of friends and artists they shared, from Andy Warhol and Fran Lebowitz, to Susan Sontag and David Wojnarowicz.

In his later years he was called to Rome to decorate chapels for Pope Eugene IV and then Pope Nicholas V. Of his life, Giorgio Vasari wrote: "it is impossible to bestow too much praise on this holy father, who was so humble and modest in all that he did and said and whose pictures were painted with such facility and piety."

Preserved in a small-format paperback, Richter's Strip-Tower is an exercise in three-dimensional abstractionSince the early 1960s, Gerhard Richter (born 1932) has tirelessly explored the infinite possibilities of painting and gained status as a celebrated artist worldwide. His recent public commission, Strip-Tower (962) (2023), expands on the artist's enduring investigations of painting, photography, digital reproduction and abstraction. Building on his series of Abstract Paintings from the 1970s onward, and Strip Paintings made since 2011, Richter now moves his explorations into three dimensions. He created Strip-Tower using glossy ceramic tiles that clad two perpendicular panels to create a cruciform structure of 12 faces, intended to be viewed in the round. Marcus du Sautoy, Professor for the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University, describes the work as a piece of "complexity and simplicity," its vertical stripes hiding a deeper, symmetrical process. The book also features a preface by Serpentine Artistic Director Hans Ulrich Obrist and Chief Executive Bettina Korek.
