This book investigates the history of the Protestant voting blocs and associations in the Irish border counties of Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan, from 1920 to 2016. While there are many studies on the history of Irish Unionism and Protestantism, there has been a lack of research concerning the political history of the Protestant community in the border counties following partition. Many Protestant Unionists in counties Cavan, Donegal, and Monaghan felt betrayed by their six county counterparts breaking the Ulster Covenant in abandoning a nine-county Northern Ireland. However, the Unionist Associations of these counties evolved after the implementation of the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1922 and adapted to their new political environment by becoming ‘Protestant’ Associations. The author seeks to explore how these Associations were established, and how they reacted to political changes during the twentieth century. Arguing that Protestant Associations arose as a Unionist shock response to Ireland’s partition in 1922, the author demonstrates how they aimed to ensure their political representation and the maintaining of Protestant interests. Support for these associations dwindled over time due to demographic change, a decline in membership of the Orange Order, and the gradual erosion of Southern Protestantism as a separate political identity over the course of multiple generations. Shedding light on why these associations lasted until the twenty-first century, and then disbanded, this book examines how former Southern Unionists in the border counties evolved their political identity following partition.

This book is the first English translation of a German classic in the social-historical historiography of science in the early modern period. It presents a reconstruction of the ‘Scientific Revolution’ based on a critical historical materialism. It argues that the dominant ideas, images, and philosophies of nature of that time were conditioned by humans’ practical and technological relationship with nature, and that they changed in accordance with the historical development of early capitalist society. Against economic reductionism, Lefèvre stresses the interdependence of material conditions of life and theories of nature on the basis of a critical study of sources and historical contexts. Die im 21. Jahrhundert omnipräsente Rede von einer „multipolaren“ Welt hat eine lange Vorgeschichte. Als Richard Nixon im Februar 1972 die Volksrepublik China als erster US-Präsident besuchte, titelte der Spiegel „Weltmacht China“. China saß seit 1971 im UN-Sicherheitsrat und diplomatische Beziehungen wurden auch für westliche Staaten zur neuen Normalität. Nun schien sich zu bestätigen, was in den langen 1960er-Jahren diskutiert wurde: ein Aufstieg Chinas zur „Weltmacht“ in einer anbrechenden „multipolaren“ Mächteordnung oder einem „großen Dreieck“. Der „Kalte Krieg“ galt als hochpolarisierte Phase des Ost-West-Konflikts zunehmend als abgeschlossen. Aufgeworfen war die Frage, wohin sich die verändernde Welt entwickeln werde. Der Ost-West-Konflikt schien zu bleiben, wenn auch flankiert durch neue globale Problemlagen. Doch die emphatische Betonung des „weltpolitischen“ Umbruchs durch das Hinzutreten Chinas, potenziell aber auch Japans und des geeinten Westeuropas wich bald Ernüchterung.
