Governing China in the 21st Century

‘China’s Urban–Rural Relations: Myths, Lessons, and Legacy of the New-Type Urbanisation Plan’ offers a critical and timely examination of one of the most ambitious transformation agendas of the 21st century. The book examines how China's New-Type Urbanisation Plan has changed the connection between cities and the countryside—spatially, economically, institutionally, and socially—moving beyond celebratory narratives and crude criticisms. This book fundamentally questions the notion that urbanisation is a neutral or consistently advantageous development. It contends that although China's approach has brought about previously unheard-of levels of scale, speed, and connection, it has also resulted in uneven outcomes, enduring inequality, and contentious forms of integration. As described above, urban-rural change is a complicated and frequently conflicting process influenced by distributional dynamics, institutional frameworks, and governance decisions rather than a straight line toward equilibrium. Architects, planners and scholars will find it of interest.Ali Cheshmehzangi
is Professor and Head of the School of Architecture, Design and Planning at The University of Queensland, Australia. His research focuses on urban sustainability, climate resilience, and the evolving relationships between cities, communities, and technological systems. He has authored and edited more than 70 academic books and published extensively on sustainable urbanism, urban transformation, and the future of cities. His work on China draws on extensive research and academic experience, critically examining the country’s rapid urbanisation, urban–rural transformation, and governance practices within wider debates on sustainable development, carbon neutrality, and long-term urban and regional change.

This book explores Chinese engagement in Africa’s mining sector within the context of international business. Conceptual and empirical contributions by diverse authors examine mining activities of Chinese companies in several African countries. Emerging from those contributions is a theory of minimal investment, defined as the degree to which the companies invest minimally in African operations, communities, and countries just for them to get by (i.e., function as normal).
The volume presents four conditions that explain why minimal investment persists as a dominant logic of foreign firm behaviour in Africa. Institutions permit it, strategies enact it, heritage legitimizes it, and reactions stabilize it. Minimal investment has produced order, and order is safety both for firms and often for host institutions alike. Optimal investment, by contrast, introduces ‘danger’ because it changes the status quo, redistributes power, and mitigates African rather than firm risk. The Theory of Minimal Investment (TMI) reveals how underinvestment is an intentional, albeit seemingly rational, historically embedded, and institutionally sustained strategy of engagement.
Coming at a time in which African countries are seeing a surge of Chinese interest in Africa, this book offers a cautionary tale of the consequences of organizations seeking the ‘help’ of Chinese companies. It will appeal to International Business studies and strategy researchers interested in interorganizational relationships, particularly from the African perspective.

This book presents an in-depth empirical study of food and plastic family-owned small and medium enterprises (SMEs), tracing their histories, organizational evolution, and generational transitions. Beginning as small, traditionally managed firms, these businesses have adapted over time, with some emerging as medium-scale, semi-professional entities, while a few have grown into large, professionally managed corporations. Focused on the development of tacit knowledge through innovation, this study explores the "3Ms" framework and its role in sustaining these enterprises across generations. The concluding chapter synthesizes key findings, addresses initial research questions, and highlights the divergent paths of family firms in food production versus plastics, where tacit knowledge proves less relevant amid modern technological trends. Offering insights into nurturing innovation and upgrading product quality. Lee Kean Yew, Ph.D. is currently a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Chinese Studies, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia. He received his Ph.D. from the Asia-Europe Institute with specialization in Economics and Administration studies at Universiti Malaya. His research interests span family businesses in Southeast Asia, Malaysian Chinese society and the cultural innovation of the Malaysian Chinese community. He currently forms a research team exploring cultural innovation of family businesses in Southeast Asia.Wong Sau Man is a doctoral candidate in Chinese Studies at Universiti Malaya, Malaysia. She holds a Master of Chinese Studies and a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the same institution. Her research focuses on entrepreneurial studies, business management, and the application of Chinese philosophy in contemporary society. This interdisciplinary training offers a distinctive perspective on enterprises as economic, cultural and historical institutions shaped by the evolution of knowledge and cultural continuity. She has conducted extensive case studies on Malaysian family businesses, analyzing their adaptation strategies, market evolution, and generational transitions.

Tacit Knowledge in Malaysian Plastics and Food Industries

In We Live with the Sea, Andrew Littlejohn addresses the implementation and controversy surrounding safety infrastructures following the March 2011 tsunami in northeastern Japan. While the Japanese government proposed and enforced infrastructural transformations in the wake of the tsunami, these changes did not consider the impact on residents who built their communities and livelihoods around the coast. Focusing on the tsunami survivors who resisted government plans for increased coastal defenses, Littlejohn highlights alternative proposals offered by the local residents as well as the environmental, ecological, and more-than-human dependencies and imbrications those proposals reveal. In doing so, he argues that imposed modernist safety structures undermine the very things they claim to protect, showing how attempts to "ecologize" safety may offer more sustainable ways of thinking about security, preservation, and infrastructure.
