Asian Yearbook of International Economic Law

The Asian Yearbook of International Economic Law (AYIEL) 2025 addresses the rapidly evolving field of international economic law with a special focus on Asia and the Pacific. With the rapidly changing geopolitical situation, protectionist measures have been taken by many countries, which has caused significant impact on international economic governance. Given the importance of Asia and the Pacific, it is necessary to study on trade protectionism and its impacts especially from a regional perspective.

A Strategic Transformation of Mobility and Logistics

Low-Altitude Economy

Mit Beiträgen von: Julian Backhaus, Rolf Claessen, Ashley Dudarenok, Martina Fuchs, Emanuela Hanes, Dagobert Hartmann, Stefanie Liliane Hegger, Jutta Hensel, Alexandra Hildebrandt, Manfred Huschka, Stephan Jüngling, Francis Kremer, Anastasia Lauterbach, Helmut Merkel, Derek Meyer, René Ruschmeier, Michael Schumann, Sophia Slingerland, Patrick Soureck, Alexandra Stefanov, Urs Unkauf, Wai Manske Wang, Thomas Cherico Wanger, Ilka Waßmann, Christoph Weber, Miriam Wickertsheim, Kevin Johannes Woerner, Mingqi Xie, Wanze Zhang und Moonie Zhu.

This book explores Chinese engagement in Africa’s mining sector within the context of international business. Conceptual and empirical contributions by diverse authors examine mining activities of Chinese companies in several African countries. Emerging from those contributions is a theory of minimal investment, defined as the degree to which the companies invest minimally in African operations, communities, and countries just for them to get by (i.e., function as normal).
The volume presents four conditions that explain why minimal investment persists as a dominant logic of foreign firm behaviour in Africa. Institutions permit it, strategies enact it, heritage legitimizes it, and reactions stabilize it. Minimal investment has produced order, and order is safety both for firms and often for host institutions alike. Optimal investment, by contrast, introduces ‘danger’ because it changes the status quo, redistributes power, and mitigates African rather than firm risk. The Theory of Minimal Investment (TMI) reveals how underinvestment is an intentional, albeit seemingly rational, historically embedded, and institutionally sustained strategy of engagement.
Coming at a time in which African countries are seeing a surge of Chinese interest in Africa, this book offers a cautionary tale of the consequences of organizations seeking the ‘help’ of Chinese companies. It will appeal to International Business studies and strategy researchers interested in interorganizational relationships, particularly from the African perspective.

From geological maps to photographs and films of snow, ice, clouds, and coral reefs, visual inscriptions mediate the construction and codification of extractive modes of seeing Earth's subterranean depths and aerial heights. Tracing the territorial ambitions of the archipelagic empires of Japan and the United States in the twentieth century, Archives of the Anthropocene explores crucial moments of overlap between the geoscientific history of studying Earth's deep time and the geopolitical history of territorialization, militarization, and extraction in the Pacific and polar regions. By engaging with contemporary critiques of settler colonialism, liberal humanism, and nonhuman labor from the perspective of environmental media studies, Yuriko Furuhata unsettles the universalist narrative of the Anthropocene, calling us to instead imagine an anticolonial and anti-imperial future for the planet.

Sovereignty, Sacrifice, and Survival in Pakistan’s Necropolitical Order: Death’s Dominion
examines how sovereignty, sacrifice, and survival are experienced by individuals living under Pakistan’s militant and counter-militant regimes. Drawing on unstructured, in-depth interviews with sectarian militants and interrupted martyrdom operatives, it transforms first-person testimony into a critical analysis of necropolitics: the power to determine who may live, who must remain vulnerable, and who may be exposed to death. The book shows how selective protection, institutional failure, militant violence, and exceptional security practices can produce “death-worlds” governed through insecurity, abandonment, and differential exposure to violence.
Combining phenomenological inquiry with post-structural theory, the study reveals how state and non-state actors participate in overlapping moral and political economies of death, in which martyrdom, refusal, betrayal, and survival acquire political and sacred meanings. It advances the Pakistan-specific NEC Framework—National, Ethnosectarian, and Counterterror Necropolitics—to explain how competing forms of sovereignty intersect in shaping the national order. In dialogue with Michel Foucault, Giorgio Agamben, Achille Mbembe, and Judith Butler, the book also develops counter-necropolitics as a life-affirming project grounded in justice, accountability, rehabilitation, recognition, reparation, and counter-narratives.Munir Ahmad Zia Rao

This book presents an in-depth empirical study of food and plastic family-owned small and medium enterprises (SMEs), tracing their histories, organizational evolution, and generational transitions. Beginning as small, traditionally managed firms, these businesses have adapted over time, with some emerging as medium-scale, semi-professional entities, while a few have grown into large, professionally managed corporations. Focused on the development of tacit knowledge through innovation, this study explores the "3Ms" framework and its role in sustaining these enterprises across generations. The concluding chapter synthesizes key findings, addresses initial research questions, and highlights the divergent paths of family firms in food production versus plastics, where tacit knowledge proves less relevant amid modern technological trends. Offering insights into nurturing innovation and upgrading product quality. Lee Kean Yew, Ph.D. is currently a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Chinese Studies, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia.
