&lt;div&gt;This book examines the ‘war on terror’ and radicalization from an ontological, non-state centric perspective. Since 9/11, criminology has developed in its study of terrorism, utilising alternative non-state centric frameworks to uncover and make visible state-initiated harm. Although progress has been achieved, criminology has continued to privilege the state, thereby failing to uncover forms of state crime and how such crimes facilitate radicalization and terrorism. Ahmed aims to rectify this gap by demonstrating how crimes of the state have contributed to the existence of Islamist-inspired terrorism and the emergence of global Jihadist organisations like Al-Qaeda and ISIS.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;i&gt;The ‘War on Terror’ &lt;/i&gt;abandons the dominant socially-constructed discourse and application of the ‘war on terror’ and instead favours a grounded approach whereby actors, actions and consequences are analysed according to the risk they represent. Ahmed achieves this grounded approach through situating state practices in international human rights law and international humanitarian law. Through documenting the intersectionality of these practices with radicalization in the emergence of global Jihadist organisations, the book demonstrates how state crimes contribute to terrorism. The ‘War on Terror', State Crime & Radicalization

The International Crimes Tribunal in Bangladesh was established in 2010 with the aim of bringing to trial perpetrators of crimes committed during the Liberation War in 1971, through which the country seceded from Pakistan. The International Crimes Tribunal is a domestic tribunal based on the International Crimes Tribunals Act from 1973 and the Rules of Procedure enacted by the Tribunal itself. The initiation of these trials almost 40 years after the war entails several challenges. The publication examines to what extent the Tribunal's legal framework as well as its jurisprudence comply with international standards as established in international treaties, customary international law and in the jurisprudence of international criminal law. To this end, the substantive law and its interpretation as well as the procedural standards applied at these trials are examined thoroughly. At the same time, the analysis takes into account the political environment surrounding the Tribunal's work and assesses its impact on the country's process of coming to terms with the past.

In his new book, Law, War and Crime, Gerry Simpson explores the meaning and effect of such trials, and places them in their broader political and cultural contexts. The book traces the development of the war crimes field from its origins in the outlawing of piracy to its contemporary manifestation in the establishment of the International Criminal Court in The Hague.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;p&gt;Simpson argues that the field of war crimes is constituted by a number of tensions between, for example, politics and law, local justice and cosmopolitan reckoning, collective guilt and individual responsibility, and between the instinct that war, at worst, is an error and the conviction that war is a crime.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Written in the wake of an extraordinary period in the life of the law, the book asks a number of critical questions. What does it mean to talk about war in the language of the criminal law? What are the consequences of seeking to criminalise the conduct of one's enemies? How did this relatively new phenomenon of putting on trial perpetrators of mass atrocity and defeated enemies come into existence? This book seeks to answer these important questions whilst shedding new light on the complex relationship between law, war and crime.&lt;/p&gt;

This book develops the discourse on the experiences of ex-combatants and their transition from war to peace, from the perspective of scholars across disciplines. Ex-combatants are often overlooked and ignored in the post-conflict search for memory and understanding, resulting in their voice being excluded or distorted. This collection seeks to disclose something of the lived experience of ex-combatants who have made the transition from war to peace to help to understand some of the difficulties they have encountered in social and emotional reintegration in the wake of combat. These include: motivations and mobilizations to participation in military struggle; the material difficulties experienced in social reintegration after the war; the emotional legacies of conflict; the discourses they utilize to reconcile their past in a society moving forward from conflict toward peace; and ex-combatants’ subsequent engagement – or not – in peacebuilding. It also examines the contributions that former combatants have made to post-conflict compromise, reconciliation and peacebuilding. It focusses on male non-state actors, women, child soldiers and, unusually, state veterans, and complements previous volumes which captured the voices of victims in Northern Ireland, South Africa and Sri Lanka. This volume speaks to those working in the areas of sociology, criminology, security studies, politics, and international relations, and professionals working in social justice and human rights NGOs.

        &lt;p&gt;Unter dem Begriff des Gesamttatelements nimmt diese Arbeit eine erstmalige rechtsdogmatische Erfassung der tatbestandlichen Kollektivität in Völkerstraftaten vor. Dieses Gesamttatelement ist Alleinstellungsmerkmal der Völkerrechtsverbrechen gegenüber Straftaten nach nationalem Recht. Die rechtsdogmatische Analyse der Arbeit nimmt neben der für die Einordnung in der Straftatsystematik maßgebende Unrechtsrelevanz auch die Erfassung eines legitimen Zurechnungsmechanismus zwischen kollektivem Geschehen und strafrechtlicher Schuld des Individuums in den Blick. Die Ergebnisse der rechtsdogmatischen Analyse werden sodann an Instituten des „allgemeinen“ Teils des IStGH-Status der Überprüfung unterzogen.&lt;/p&gt;

        &lt;p&gt;Die interdisziplinäre Tagung „Krieg in der Ukraine: Perspektiven“ fand vom 30. August–1. September 2023 in Münster statt. Veranstalter war die Deutsche Hochschule der Polizei (DHPol) in Münster. Thematisiert wurden die Hintergründe und Herausforderungen des fortdauernden russischen Angriffskrieges gegen die Ukraine, Möglichkeiten seiner Beendigung sowie Rahmenbedingungen einer stabilen und wehrhaften internationalen Friedensordnung aus völker(straf)rechtlicher, außenpolitischer und polizeipraktischer Perspektive. Der Tagungsband enthält ausgewählte Tagungsvorträge.
