Our Ancient Religion A handbook for the Living Einherjar and Valkyrjar

Crowell L: Vor Forn Sidr: (Our Ancient
Religion)

Vor Forn Sidr: (Our Ancient Religion)

Collegium Metaphysicum

A promising philosophy of religion should combine two qualities: an eye for the diversity and specific character of religious phenomena on the one hand, and the power to provide a systematic overall interpretation on the other. The philosophy of religion developed by Hegel during his time in Berlin possesses precisely these qualities to a degree that is unparalleled in the present day. There is therefore reason to believe that a return to Hegel could provide innovative impetus for the current debate on the philosophy of religion. Friedrich Hermanni aims to reconstruct Hegel's Berlin philosophy of religion in a precise and comprehensible manner, thereby paving the way for its appropriation in the context of contemporary philosophy of religion. The author begins by addressing Hegel's concept of religion and the subsequent implications for understanding religions. Regarding the concept itself, religion is not merely a subjective human affair; rather, it is the consciousness that the divine spirit has of itself through the mediation of the human spirit. This means, however, that religion can only manifest within a plurality of religions, and that throughout the history of religions, religious consciousness becomes increasingly aware of the true nature of religion. The second part reconstructs Hegel's theory of the origin and validity of religious knowledge. As for its origin, religion is rooted in a conceptual elevation of man from the world to God - an elevation that occurs within "natural thought." Yet, religious knowledge is only justified when these forms of elevation prove themselves within "comprehending thought" (
begreifendes Denken
). The third part demonstrates how Hegel derives the three general forms of religion from the three moments of the concept of religion - (a) the substantial unity between the absolute and the finite spirit, (b) the distinction between the two, and (c) the sublation (
Aufhebung
) of that distinction - and how he assigns historical religions to these forms. Finally, the fourth part examines Hegel's philosophy of the "consummate religion," which he equates with Christianity. According to Hegel, Christianity is consummate because, unlike other religions, it is conscious not merely of individual moments of the concept of religion, but of all its moments.

Religion in Philosophy and Theology

Phenomenology has a religiophilosophical tenet that everything is what it is. In this work, Lukas Ohly shows that it authenticates Husserl's worldliness, the abyssal ground in Heidegger's thinking on the history of being and Arendt's inaccessibility of common sense. Its only accessibility lies in faith.

The Collected Works of Rudolf Steiner

Thirteen lectures, Stockholm, January 1910 (CW 117a)'What is the Christ-event? It is a confluence of all preceding philosophies and religious streams of humanity... united in Palestine; and they were expressed in the Gospels according to the different types of initiation of the one or other Evangelist.' - Rudolf SteinerSpeaking two years after his main lecture course on the Gospel of John, Rudolf Steiner discusses initiation traditions in the course of human history, and how the Christ Event unified them all - in particular, those connected to the Western and Eastern mysteries. In addition to esoteric interpretations of passages in the Gospels, Steiner also presents many new and complementary insights on the world-historic significance of Christ's mission, including his initial reference to the Second Coming in the etheric realm.Dense in content, these thirteen lectures - delivered to an audience at the Royal Swedish Academy of Science, Stockholm - enrich our understanding of Rudolf Steiner's Christology. Only recently published in German, and here in English for the first time, the lectures are accompanied with an introduction by Hans-Christian Zehnter, an appendix of photos and facsimiles, extensive notes and an index.

The Gospel of John and the Other Three Gospels

Scripta Antiquitatis Posterioris ad Ethicam REligionemque pertinentia

For twenty-five years, SAPERE has been exploring texts from the late Hellenistic and Roman Imperial periods concerned with philosophy, religion, and ethics by means of an innovative interdisciplinary editorial and commentary method - within the horizons of literary studies and art history, medicine and psychology, archaeology and history, pedagogy and jurisprudence. The authors discussed range from Plutarch and Dio of Prusa, Epictetus and Maximus of Tyre, Lucian and Galen, to Philo of Alexandria, the Qumran texts, and the Sapientia Salomonis, and further to Justin, Tatian, the Hermetic literature, Sallustius, Julian, and Libanius. The "SAPERE Syntheses" explore, within the interdisciplinary horizon indispensable to the series, how the impulses that SAPERE has developed both with respect to individual authors and transversal topics help to articulate with increasing nuance the map of the religious-philosophical intellectual world of the Imperial period. In this anniversary volume, this is done with regard to the relationship between myth and historiography, to religious philosophy as the quest for (true) life, as well as to anthropology and cosmology. In accordance with SAPERE's concept of bringing different academic fields into conversation about the texts, this volume likewise brings together prominent contributors from Religious Studies, Theology, Jewish Studies, Classical Philology, Philosophy, History, and Political Science. Thus a fascinating dialogue of research emerges, grounded in ancient voices, on the themes of "truth," "life," "the human being," and "the world."

Heresy is a brilliant book' - The Times 'Enthralling . . . an absolute pleasure to read' - The Sunday Telegraph ?In the beginning was the Word,' says the Gospel of John. This sentence - and the words of all four gospels - is central to the teachings of the Christian Church and has shaped Western art, literature and language, and the Western mind. Yet in the years after the death of Christ there was not merely one word, nor any consensus as to who Jesus was or why he had mattered. There were many different Jesuses, among them the aggressive Jesus who scorned his parents and crippled those who opposed him, the Jesus who sold his twin into slavery and the Jesus who had someone crucified in his stead. Moreover, in the early years of the first millennium there were many other saviours, many sons of gods who healed the sick and cured the lame. But as Christianity spread, they were pronounced unacceptable - even heretical - and they faded from view. Now, in Heresy, Catherine Nixey tells their extraordinary story, one of contingency, chance and plurality. It is a story about what might have been.

A new edition of Martin Buber's many writings on Arab-Jewish relations in Palestine, with updated forewords by two preeminent Palestinian and Jewish scholars. The theologian and philosopher Martin Buber (1878-1965) was committed to radical socioeconomic reconstruction in pursuit of international peace. His voluminous writings on Arab-Jewish relations in Palestine interweave his religious and philosophical teachings with his politics, each essential to Buber's vision of democratic and religious life. A Land of Two Peoples collects the letters, talks, and essays in which Buber advocated for a binationalism that reconciled Arabs and Jews as a solution to the conflict in the Middle East. As relevant today as when it was first published nearly fifty years ago, this edition of A Land of Two Peoples includes two forewords from the preeminent Jewish and Palestinian scholars Paul Mendes-Flohr and Raef Zreik.

In this book, Roberto Di Ceglie offers an historical, theological, and epistemological investigation exploring how commitments to God and/or the good generate the optimum condition to achieve knowledge. Di Ceglie criticizes the common belief that to attain knowledge, one must always be ready to replace one's convictions with beliefs that appear to be proven. He defends a more comprehensive view, historically exemplified by outstanding Christian thinkers, whereby believers are expected to commit themselves to God and to related beliefs no matter how convincing the evidence contradicting such beliefs appears to be. He also argues that both believers and unbelievers can commit themselves to God and the good, respectively, thereby creating a spiritual turn in epistemology that enables them to generate the best possible condition for conducting rational enquiries and discussion.

God, the Good, and the Spiritual Turn in Epistemology

Paul's letter to the Ephesians has been beloved throughout church history and is full of theological significance and practical instruction. Its themes revolve around identity in Christ, both as individuals and as the church. Paul's goal is to help believers see the beauty and glory of the church and grow up into maturity. Leading New Testament scholar Thomas Schreiner illuminates the text of Ephesians in this important, stand-alone commentary. Writing from an unapologetically evangelical and Reformed perspective, Schreiner's focus is on exegesis of the text and on drawing out theological significance. For each section of text, Schreiner examines the flow of thought and then provides a verse-by-verse interpretation. While providing a brief introduction to the letter, the author does not dwell much on topics such as authorship, historical background, or text-critical issues. His focus on exegesis and robust theological interpretation makes this an ideal resource for pastors, students, Bible teachers, and educated lay readers.

A History of Philosophy

In this latest volume of A History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps, Peter Adamson presents a lively and accessible introduction to European philosophy during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

Philosophy in the Reformation focuses on the parallel and intertwining emergence of humanism and of religious reform, as figures like Erasmus, Luther, and Calvin remade the intellectual and spiritual life of Europe. In the first three parts of the book, philosophical developments in central Europe, France, and Britain are examined. A wide range of topics and controversies are discussed, from debates over free will to the legitimacy of tyrannicide. This was also the time of the Northern Renaissance, which saw a resurgence of ancient concepts like skepticism and atomist theories of matter. The volume's final section charts the Catholic reaction to these epochal events in the Counter-Reformation, and especially the ideas of Spanish thinkers like Molina and Suárez. Quite a few familiar figures are discussed, such as Montaigne and Copernicus. But as always in this series, Adamson lavishes attention on fascinating figures who are often ignored in the history of philosophy, like John Dee, Robert Fludd, and Oliva Sabuco (who is just one of numerous women intellectuals covered). Another feature of the book is its attention to literature and the arts: the reader will learn how the achievements of Dürer, Michelangelo, Shakespeare, and Cervantes relate to philosophical currents of the time. The eighth volume in the A History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps series takes us to the threshold of the early modern era and sets the stage for the developments that unfolded during the Enlightenment.
