For twenty-five years, SAPERE has been exploring texts from the late Hellenistic and Roman Imperial periods concerned with philosophy, religion, and ethics by means of an innovative interdisciplinary editorial and commentary method - within the horizons of literary studies and art history, medicine and psychology, archaeology and history, pedagogy and jurisprudence. The authors discussed range from Plutarch and Dio of Prusa, Epictetus and Maximus of Tyre, Lucian and Galen, to Philo of Alexandria, the Qumran texts, and the Sapientia Salomonis, and further to Justin, Tatian, the Hermetic literature, Sallustius, Julian, and Libanius. The "SAPERE Syntheses" explore, within the interdisciplinary horizon indispensable to the series, how the impulses that SAPERE has developed both with respect to individual authors and transversal topics help to articulate with increasing nuance the map of the religious-philosophical intellectual world of the Imperial period. In this anniversary volume, this is done with regard to the relationship between myth and historiography, to religious philosophy as the quest for (true) life, as well as to anthropology and cosmology. In accordance with SAPERE's concept of bringing different academic fields into conversation about the texts, this volume likewise brings together prominent contributors from Religious Studies, Theology, Jewish Studies, Classical Philology, Philosophy, History, and Political Science. Thus a fascinating dialogue of research emerges, grounded in ancient voices, on the themes of "truth," "life," "the human being," and "the world."

What does the Christian tradition have to say about property and ownership? The Earth Is the Lord's offers compelling answers to this question. In this timely and thought-provoking book, author Liam de los Reyes presents a counterpoint from within the Christian tradition to both Lockean and utilitarian theories of property. Combining strong textual evidence and clear reasoning, de los Reyes sets forth a natural law theory of property based on key patristic, scholastic, early modern, and contemporary theological sources. This theory posits that all things belong properly to God; that God has given human beings the power to use the things of the world for their own flourishing; and that property as a convention ought to govern and distribute the things of the world in accordance with this divine purpose. More specifically, de los Reyes argues that within the Christian tradition, property is a convention that gives expression to the political nature of humans by protecting certain principles of justice in how humans govern the material order, while leaving the determination of any one property regime open to a people's political reasoning that takes into account that people's historical, cultural, and environmental contexts. De los Reyes's theory is general enough to support a wide array of philosophical and theological theories of justice but also concrete enough to clarify many of the related critiques of capitalism and markets, making it of particular interest to scholars of ethics, religion, philosophy, law, and economics.

Friedrich Schleiermachers christliche Sittenlehre wird vielfach als Kulturtheorie gedeutet, zumal alle wesentlichen Lebensbereiche im Bezug zum Christentum untersucht werden. Dabei geht Schleiermacher äußerst systematisch vor: So beruht seine Kulturtheorie des Christentums auf einem handlungstheoretischen Fundament (und ist nach drei Typen des Handelns unterteilt). Folglich finden sich reichlich Material und zugleich Begrifflichkeiten sowie systematische Zusammenhänge zur weiteren Reflexion und Erforschung. Mithin beschäftigen sich viele Beiträge des Bandes mit Interpretationen der christlichen Sittenlehre - auch vor dem Hintergrund der weiteren Entwicklung der Moderne. Dass Schleiermachers theologische Ethik es wert ist, aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln erneut interpretiert zu werden, rechtfertigt die Entstehung einer neuen Edition. 1843 hatte sein Schüler Ludwig Jonas eine verdienstvolle, aber nach heutigen Editionsstandards nicht mehr geeignete Publikation der Vorlesungsmanuskripte Schleiermachers und der studentischen Nachschriften in kompilierter Form herausgegeben. In Zukunft werden die Manuskripte und alle überlieferten studentischen Nachschriften digital und historisch-kritisch erfasst zugänglich sein. Überlegungen zur neuen Edition eröffnen daher den Band. Da Schleiermacher mehrere Disziplinen in einem systematischen Zusammenhang beforschte und unterrichtete, sind viele Anhaltspunkte für Kontextualisierungen gegeben. Einige der Aufsätze stellen die christliche Sittenlehre mit anderen Disziplinen aus Schleiermachers Werk ins Verhältnis, andere gehen darüber hinaus und stellen auch einen Bezug zu aktuellen Themen her.&nbsp;

Challenging the standard interpretation of Nietzsche's last published work, Ecce Homo, as frivolous autobiography, Thomas H. Brobjer provides an original and detailed analysis of Ecce Homo as fundamental to Nietzsche's unfinished masterwork on the revaluation of all values.

Arguing that Ecce Homo laid the foundations for his planned four-volume work on values, Brobjer draws together the intentions and motivations behind Nietzsche's late work to create a new narrative on it. He situates this period in the desire to undermine the system of Christian values that Nietzsche believed were unchecked as the standard moral gauge for his time. To engage in this project, Brobjer shows that it was essential for Nietzsche to explore the self and life-denying qualities of a Christian system of values within a broader framework of ideas about morality, altruism, egotism, pessimism, humility and pride.

By fully outlining the context of Ecce Homo, Brobjer provides a complete corrective to its reception as a self-referential and eccentric text of little philosophical significance, enabling a new understanding within the history of philosophy and Nietzsche's oeuvre.

Slavoj Zizek has long been a commentator on, and critic of, Christian theology. His preoccupation with Badiou's concept of 'the event' alongside the Pauline thought of the New Testament has led to a decidedly theological turn in his thinking. Drawing on traditions and subjects as broad as Buddhist thought, dialectical materialism, political subjectivity, quantum physics, AI and chatbots, this book articulates Zizek's idea of a religious life for the first time. 
 
 Christian Atheism is a unique insight into Zizek's theological project and the first book-length exploration of his religious thinking. In his own words, "to become a true dialectical materialist, one should go through the Christian experience." Crucial to his whole conception of 'experience' is not some kind of spiritual revelation but rather the logic of materialistic thought. This affirmation of Christian theology whilst simultaneously deconstructing it is a familiar Zizekian move, but one that holds deep-seated political, philosophical and, in the end, personal import for him.

Über 2.000 Jahre lang bildeten Philosophie und Kunst eine Einheit, die aber im 19. Jahrhundert zerbrach. Nun bezog sich die Philosophie auf die objektive Realität unter Ausschluss des Ästhetischen, das nur noch subjektiv war. Dieser Zustand ist unnatürlich, denn die Kunst ist sicher nicht nur ein Spiel rein subjektiver Emotionen. Um den Graben zwischen Kunst und Philosophie erneut zu überbrücken, scheint sich die Phänomenologie bzw. Leibphilosophie anzubieten mit ihrem fundamentalen Konzept der Stimmungen oder Atmosphären, die all unser Erkennen, Wollen und Gestalten trägt. 
 

 Man könnte sich fragen, ob von hier aus ein Übergang zum Glauben möglich wäre. Zwar nicht direkt, aber der gläubige Mensch findet doch in der Gestimmtheit unserer Grundvollzüge eine Bestätigung seines Glaubens.

For over 2,000 years, philosophy and art formed a unity, which broke down in the 19th century. Philosophy now referred to an objective reality excluding aesthetics, which was only subjective. This state of affairs is unnatural, because art is certainly not just a play of purely subjective emotions. In order to bridge the gap between art and philosophy once again, phenomenology or 'Leibphilosophie' (philosophy of the body) seems to offer itself with its fundamental concept of moods or atmospheres, which underpins all our cognition, will and creating. 
 

 One could ask whether a transition to faith is possible from here. Not directly, but the believer does find confirmation of his faith in the atmosphere of the church's nature.
