If we want to be true atheists, do we have to begin with a religious edifice and undermine it from within?

Slavoj Zizek has long been a commentator on, and critic of, Christian theology. His preoccupation with Badiou's concept of 'the event' alongside the Pauline thought of the New Testament has led to a decidedly theological turn in his thinking. Drawing on traditions and subjects as broad as Buddhist thought, dialectical materialism, political subjectivity, quantum physics, AI and chatbots, this book articulates Zizek's idea of a religious life for the first time. 
 
 Christian Atheism is a unique insight into Zizek's theological project and the first book-length exploration of his religious thinking. In his own words, "to become a true dialectical materialist, one should go through the Christian experience." Crucial to his whole conception of 'experience' is not some kind of spiritual revelation but rather the logic of materialistic thought. This affirmation of Christian theology whilst simultaneously deconstructing it is a familiar Zizekian move, but one that holds deep-seated political, philosophical and, in the end, personal import for him.

What does the Christian tradition have to say about property and ownership? The Earth Is the Lord's offers compelling answers to this question. In this timely and thought-provoking book, author Liam de los Reyes presents a counterpoint from within the Christian tradition to both Lockean and utilitarian theories of property. Combining strong textual evidence and clear reasoning, de los Reyes sets forth a natural law theory of property based on key patristic, scholastic, early modern, and contemporary theological sources. This theory posits that all things belong properly to God; that God has given human beings the power to use the things of the world for their own flourishing; and that property as a convention ought to govern and distribute the things of the world in accordance with this divine purpose. More specifically, de los Reyes argues that within the Christian tradition, property is a convention that gives expression to the political nature of humans by protecting certain principles of justice in how humans govern the material order, while leaving the determination of any one property regime open to a people's political reasoning that takes into account that people's historical, cultural, and environmental contexts. De los Reyes's theory is general enough to support a wide array of philosophical and theological theories of justice but also concrete enough to clarify many of the related critiques of capitalism and markets, making it of particular interest to scholars of ethics, religion, philosophy, law, and economics.

The Power of Reconciliation will come to be seen as Archbishop Welby's most important book to date. Today there is so much intolerance of views that are other than our own as we demonize those we do not agree with. Conflict is widespread. With the after-effects of Covid, changes in science and technology, inequality, and increasingly polarized political and social strife, moves towards reconciliation are more necessary than ever. This book is full of practical and insightful advice relating to both religious and secular communities, from the household to the international, on how to bring about reconciliation. There is even a step-by-step guide, drawn from the author's own experience, which is extensive - both before ordination and since, Welby has seen conflict first-hand. His earlier career as a corporate executive gave him important insights on conflict resolution, and as leader of the global Anglical Communion, he has spent many years helping people work through their differences all over the world. Welby writes about Reconciliation as seeking to disagree well, also pointing out the dignity of difference. The book is thus down-to-earth, plugged into reality and devoid of pointless optimism, and yet hopefulness for the future can be found in Welby's words throughout.

The Power of Reconciliation

Challenging the standard interpretation of Nietzsche's last published work, Ecce Homo, as frivolous autobiography, Thomas H. Brobjer provides an original and detailed analysis of Ecce Homo as fundamental to Nietzsche's unfinished masterwork on the revaluation of all values.

Arguing that Ecce Homo laid the foundations for his planned four-volume work on values, Brobjer draws together the intentions and motivations behind Nietzsche's late work to create a new narrative on it. He situates this period in the desire to undermine the system of Christian values that Nietzsche believed were unchecked as the standard moral gauge for his time. To engage in this project, Brobjer shows that it was essential for Nietzsche to explore the self and life-denying qualities of a Christian system of values within a broader framework of ideas about morality, altruism, egotism, pessimism, humility and pride.

By fully outlining the context of Ecce Homo, Brobjer provides a complete corrective to its reception as a self-referential and eccentric text of little philosophical significance, enabling a new understanding within the history of philosophy and Nietzsche's oeuvre.

 Man könnte sich fragen, ob von hier aus ein Übergang zum Glauben möglich wäre. Zwar nicht direkt, aber der gläubige Mensch findet doch in der Gestimmtheit unserer Grundvollzüge eine Bestätigung seines Glaubens.

For over 2,000 years, philosophy and art formed a unity, which broke down in the 19th century. Philosophy now referred to an objective reality excluding aesthetics, which was only subjective. This state of affairs is unnatural, because art is certainly not just a play of purely subjective emotions. In order to bridge the gap between art and philosophy once again, phenomenology or 'Leibphilosophie' (philosophy of the body) seems to offer itself with its fundamental concept of moods or atmospheres, which underpins all our cognition, will and creating. 
 

 One could ask whether a transition to faith is possible from here. Not directly, but the believer does find confirmation of his faith in the atmosphere of the church's nature.
