Stories to Understand Past, Present, and Future of Mining

Edition Politik

Why Big Labor moved to the right—and the fight ahead for the left to win back America’s working class Unions helped construct the American middle class, defeat Jim Crow, and advance progressive rights, but in Trump’s America, the labor movement is changing. In Big Labor's Big Shift, journalist Nathan Bomey explores how Big Labor and the working class are no longer an automatic ally of the American left. Fueled by decades of economic decline, political disillusionment, and cultural disenfranchisement, new politically nebulous and economically populist leaders in the movement are building a powerful new movement based on class warfare that prizes wage and benefit gains over traditional progressive priorities. Through original reporting and first-hand interviews, Bomey traces key events that have led to this political shift. Bomey reveals: -At the Teamsters, president Sean O’Brien is cozying up to Donald Trump and blasting Democrats as tools of big business, even showing up at the Republican National Convention to deliver his message. -At the United Auto Workers, president Shawn Fain is seizing an opportunity to break the free trade consensus in Washington. The devout Christian, who wields religious rhetoric from the stump, is aligning with the Trump White House on tariffs and blasting Democrats for aggressively pursuing electric vehicles to fight climate change. Bomey shows how the two interconnected phenomena represent a massive political realignment—not just along cultural and nationalism lines, but of the working class itself away from its historic roots in the Democratic party. Urgent and compelling, Big Labor's Big Shift encapsulates the fight for the soul of the union movement.

A sobering investigation of the rush for lithium for electric vehicles, the problematic history of lithium mining, and the consequences for sustainability. Consumers today are buying electric vehicles with lithium-ion batteries motivated by the belief that they are doing good and decarbonizing society. But is sustainable lithium extraction possible? In Living Minerals, Javiera Barandiarán examines the history of lithium mining and uses during the twentieth century, with a specific focus on the two oldest brine-lithium mines: Silver Peak, Nevada, and Salar de Atacama, Chile, where lithium is found as one more element in a liquid mix of salts, minerals, and organisms. For six decades, mining experts have failed to ask about water usage, about waste or brine leakage, and about the ecosystem impacts in delicate deserts. Instead, they have relied on various fictions about the size of reserves, the fate of leaked brine, or the value of waste in facilitating mine development. These fictions, rooted in brine-lithium’s material qualities, could be sustained thanks to powerful mining memories that celebrated resource nationalism. Unique in its historical and multidimensional approach to minerals and mining, based on the novel Rights of Nature paradigm, and using new archival materials from both Chile and the US, the book argues that decarbonizing society requires that we reckon with these realities—or risk deepening our dependency on an unsustainable mining industry.

Apocalypse is in the air. And the far right knows it. Since the pandemic, it has successfully cultivated crises, conspiracy theories, and coalitions to fight a green energy transition. Mobilising online and in the streets, far-right actors cast decarbonisation measures as a ‘war on cars’ endangering individual liberty, the nuclear family, the nation, and western civilisation. In The Great Driving Right Show, the Zetkin Collective traces the evolution of these conflicts and shows how, as the climate crisis worsens, the political right constructs an ‘inverted crisis’ in which climate action – not climate change – represents the gravest existential threat. Rising through this shared strategy are movements and parties from anti-road-pricing saboteurs, ‘freedom’ convoys and farmers’ protests, to the Trump-led opposition to electric vehicles. Powering such actors are not only fossil-fuel and automobile interests, but an ever-expanding cycle of moral panics about climate and racial justice protesters, trans people, and migrants. With the planet at stake, we must confront the new climate denialism and the violent mobility regime fuelling the rise of fossil fascism.

Cars, Crisis, and the Rise of Fossil Fascism

The Great Driving Right Show

Past and future collide in this engaging journey through climate change, fossil capitalism and the struggle for a sustainable world. Scotland's history and future are entangled with climate change and the story of the modern world. This small country on the fringes of northern Europe pioneered fossil capitalism and played a key role in its spread across the planet. It is a living museum of the crisis of the west, of deindustrialisation, stagnation and the struggle to build a better future from the ashes. Journalist and sociologist Dominic Hinde travels from the treeless Highlands to the lowland cities, struggling to balance memories with aspiration. Through this journey he finds that his own sensory turmoil, shaped by recovery from a near fatal accident, mirrors the disarray of the fossil fuel transition - an uncertain passage between what was and what must be. Part memoir, part environmental history, part travelogue, this is a compelling narrative of connections - to place, energy and the possibility of renewal. Through the lens of one country, it asks a vital question: can the lessons of the past help us build a more sustainable future?

Much has been written about China, yet little is known about its role as the world's largest energy consumer, often obscured by misinformation. This book offers a rare historical account of China's oil and gas industry from its origins, tracing back to 1000 AD when the country drilled the world's first well using bamboo to transport gas. Serving as both a textbook for students and a reference for researchers, government officials, and industry executives, this exploration delves into the complete history and evolution of China's oil and gas industry, covering upstream, downstream, onshore, and offshore developments. It addresses the industry's growing demand, its impact on global oil and gas fundamentals, and how geopolitics influences China's energy supply security while forecasting industry evolution within the context of the global energy transition.

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! Former U.S. Attorney and author of Attack from Within Barbara McQuade offers a piercing, urgent, and deeply informed exposé on the escalating threat of far-right politics to American democracy and national security—and a clear roadmap for how to stop it. In The Fix, Barbara McQuade draws on her decades of experience as a federal prosecutor to show us the detrimental effects of a government that uses corruption, cruelty, and chaos as tools of control. As a US Attorney, McQuade became all too familiar with corruption cases, prosecuting former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, the “underwear bomber” Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, and Volkswagen, among others. Here, she exposes how rampant corruption and cruelty are being weaponized to manipulate every facet of American life. Weaving together courtroom stories, lessons from history, and real-time legal analysis, McQuade shows how each corrupt offense, each act of cruelty, is a step toward total authoritarianism. Yet The Fix is not just a critique of power gone awry. McQuade offers clear strategies that ordinary Americans can utilize, from organizing teach-ins and protests to running for local office, to reclaim the rule of law and ensure that elected officials serve the public's interest, not their own. Eye-opening and grounded in the author's abiding faith in the US Constitution to help restore power to the people, The Fix is essential reading for anyone concerned about the future of America and ready to work together to take it back.
