The Economic and Social Foundations of European Civilization

Die 1941 gegründete Kontinentale Öl AG sollte die Ölquellen des Kaukasus ausbeuten und damit die Grundlage für den von den Nazis erträumten Endsieg legen.

Der Zweite Weltkrieg war ein Krieg der Panzer, Lastkraftwagen und Flugzeuge. Öl bildete die unverzichtbare Grundlage für die Feldzüge. Das Deutsche Reich verfügte nur über geringe Vorkommen und war deshalb auf die Eroberung einer Ölbasis angewiesen. Die 1941 gegründete Kontinentale Öl AG sollte ein Gegengewicht zu den großen alliierten Ölkonzernen bilden und vor allem die reichen Erdölquellen des Kaukasus ausbeuten. Da dieses Gebiet jedoch nicht dauerhaft besetzt werden konnte, mussten sich die Nationalsozialisten mit anderen europäischen Regionen - Rumänien, Galizien, Estland - begnügen.
Das halb staatliche, halb privatwirtschaftliche Unternehmen band alle relevanten wirtschaftlichen, staatlichen, politischen und militärischen Interessengruppen ein. Die 'Konti' bildete so ein Modell für künftige, 'kontinental' orientierte Konzerne. Die hochfliegenden Zukunftspläne standen im Kontrast zum operativen Scheitern der Kontinentalen Öl AG. Insgesamt eröffnet die Geschichte dieses Unternehmens einen neuen Blick auf die NS-Wirtschaft, die herrschende Klasse des Regimes, also die hochrangigen Vertreter aus Wirtschaft, Partei, Militär und Staatsbürokratie, und die politisch-militärischen Entscheidungen. Er ist dazu geeignet, vermeintlich gesicherte Erkenntnisse über das Verhältnis von Politik und Ökonomie infrage zu stellen.

For most of the postwar period South Africa has been the largest economy in Africa, with relatively high levels of industrialization, a modern banking and financial sector and a globally significant mining industry. However, today discussion of its economy is dominated by its widespread poverty, high unemployment and extreme inequality - inequality which still exhibits strong racial lines despite the emergence of a new black elite and middle class. Indeed, amongst the countries with reliable measures, South Africa ranks as the most unequal country in the world. Sam Ashman provides a penetrating and insightful survey of South Africa's postwar economic history, in particular its economic development since 1994, when the African National Congress came to office and universal adult suffrage was finally introduced. The book examines both the legacy of the apartheid era political economy, as well as the impact of financial and trade liberalization since the 1990s, and the privatization and corporate restructuring that have, if anything, deepened the structural economic challenges the country now faces.
