The Concise Dictionary of Classical

The Concise Dictionary of Classical Hebrew Revised

The Dictionary of Encounter juxtaposes Christian and Muslim views of their own respective religions. Theologians from Germany and Turkey explain the basic concepts of their religions, presenting them side by side and thus inviting readers to better understand their own and other religions. It is an indispensable guide for Christians and Muslims living together in a pluralistic, democratic society.

In its pursuit of improving interreligious dialogue, the Eugen Biser Foundation has joined with Ankara University to develop a foundational tool for the advancement of Christian-Islamic understanding.

A breathtakingly elegant visual dictionary of 2000 Japanese words for rain, with 100 drawings in indigo. In Water of the Sky, artist Miya Ando offers us a beautifully rich, bilingual visual dictionary for rain. Through a collection of 2,000 Japanese words, their English interpretations, and 100 drawings, Ando describes the breadth and diversity of rain’s many expressions: when it falls, how it falls, and how its observer might be transformed physically or emotionally by its presence. The words range from prosaic to esoteric, extending from the meteorological (mukaame, or “very fine rain that falls in spring”) to the mystical (bunryūu, or “rain that splits a dragon's body in half”) and from the minute (kisame, or “raindrops that fall off the leaves and branches of trees”) to the vast (takuu, or “blessed rain that quenches all things in the universe”). Ando’s visual interpretations of these terms are not so much illustrations as evocations, attempts to embody or imagine each rain’s precise and essential quality. The book presents 100 of these 2,000 drawings of rain accompanied by the full index of 2,000 Japanese words and their approximate English equivalents, presented alphabetically using a hybrid Japanese-English alphabetization rubric.

The end of the kingship in Jerusalem led to new theological insights into the possibility of encountering Yahweh. Reettakaisa Sofia Salo shows that according to the Old Testament, God can always be recognized in the actual historical events in the world. This is why the ways of recognizing Yahweh appear to be very variable.

'When it comes to the world of fairies Katharine Briggs is the greatest authority by many a league, and this is the finest guide ever written.' PHILIP PULLMAN'Katharine Briggs's Dictionary is truly wonderful: vivid, witty, and full of a profound and generous knowledge that will thrill both children and adults. Spectacular.' KATHERINE RUNDELL'Katharine Briggs is an editor of such surpassing knowledge that one suspects that she may have sources among witches, ghosts and fairies.' DIANE PURKISS A new edition of Katharine Briggs's short A-Z of folklore creatures, with beautiful, bespoke illustrations by Fee Greening.Katharine Mary Briggs (1898-1980) was a British folklorist, scholar and author, recognised today as the most important archivist of British folktales. Over the course of her life, she published fourteen books, lectured widely and was president of The Folklore Society. Her books were read and used by contemporaries including J.R.R. Tolkien. Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing

An updated edition of the essential guide for all scientists--from undergraduates to senior scholars--who want to produce prose that anyone can understand. Scientific writing is often dry, wordy, and difficult to understand. But, as biologist and experienced teacher of scientific writing Anne E. Greene shows in Writing Science in Plain English, writers from all scientific disciplines can learn to produce clear, concise prose by mastering just a few simple principles. This short, focused guide presents roughly a dozen such principles based on what readers need to understand complex information, including concrete subjects, strong verbs, consistent terms, organized paragraphs, and correct sentence structure. Greene illustrates each principle with real-life examples of both good and bad writing and shows how bad writing might be improved. She ends each chapter with revision exercises (and provides suggested answers in a separate key) so that readers can come away with new writing skills after just one sitting. To help readers understand the grammatical terms used in the book, an appendix offers a refresher course on basic grammar. For this second edition, Greene has incorporated the latest research on what makes writing effective and engaging and has revised or replaced exercises and exercise keys where needed. She has also added new features that make it easier to navigate the book. A new resource for instructors who use Writing Science in Plain English in their classes is a free, online teacher's guide. Drawn from Greene's long experience teaching students how to write science clearly, the teacher's guide provides additional lectures, assignments, and activities that will inform and enliven any class.
