Jonathan Morgan argues that Cyril of Alexandria's interpretation of circumcision provides invaluable insight into his complex doctrine of salvation. Spiritual circumcision - or circumcision of the Spirit - is a recurring theme across the extensive body of work he produced before the Nestorian controversy in 428. When Cyril considers the meaning and scope of circumcision, he recognizes it as a type that can describe a range of salvific effects. For him, circumcision functions as a unifying concept for various aspects of his doctrine of salvation such as purification, sanctification, participation, and freedom. But Cyril's soteriology cannot be understood in isolation. Thus, Cyril's discussions of circumcision often include correlative concepts such as hamartiology and Trinitarian theology. In this way, Cyril's discussions of circumcision illuminate important doctrines within his entire theological schema. Cyril's interpretation of circumcision as a biblical type also sheds light on his biblical exegesis. The author demonstrates that what Cyril does with circumcision substantiates the thesis that his Scriptural interpretation was shaped, in part, by his relationship with Judaism. Throughout his biblical commentaries, Cyril goes to great lengths to demonstrate that Jewish theology and practice are founded upon the "types and shadows" of the Old Testament instead of the spiritual realities that are fulfilled in Christ. Several scholars have recognized this significant feature of Cyril's exegesis and have explored the various "type-reality" relationships present in Cyril's writings. However, very little attention has been paid to the way Cyril's interpretation of circumcision further clarifies this aspect of his biblical interpretation.

By their form, these elements communicate beyond the textual and semantic levels for rhetorical and literary purposes. "Meta-textual semantics" is a widespread scribal device in the ancient world, and ancient audiences and exegetes (e.g., rabbinic, medieval Jewish and Christian exegetes, and Masoretes) properly appreciated it, but it is underappreciated in modern interpretations of the Hebrew Bible. Using Prov 1:1-7 as a paradigm, Josiah D. Peeler explores elements in Hebrew Jeremiah usually considered secondary because of their odd or well-formed nature, to demonstrate that they exemplify a contextual theme.

Following the earlier volume by Martin Dibelius and Hans Conzelmann, this commentary offers an entirely new interpretation of First and Second Timothy and Titus. Contemporary scholarship continues to debate the authenticity and connection of the two letters to Timothy and the letter to Titus. Stefan Krauter critically engages with these current discussions and carefully weighs the respective positions. On the basis of the available evidence - both within the texts themselves and in external sources - a definitive judgment is not possible; an assessment, however, can be ventured: the three letters are read as a deliberately composed pseudepigraphical letter collection that, in the second century, supplemented the ten other Pauline letters already in circulation as a corpus. The unknown author concisely summarizes the central ideas of the earlier Pauline letters. He develops their themes in linguistically innovative ways appropriate to his own time and brings them into dialogue with motifs drawn from the Gospel tradition. In this way, he tries to influence the subsequent reception of Paul. His writings are not a forgery in the sense of fabricating a Pauline intervention in specific second-century controversies. Rather, they give rise to a constructed image of the apostle as the founder of the Christian community who shapes its future by instructing his co-workers. Stefan Krauter situates the letters within the literature and culture of imperial antiquity, with particular emphasis on their philological, cultural and religio-historical interpretation.

Dabei ergeben sich sehr situationsbezogene Einsichten in das Wesen des Apostelamtes, die aber zugleich von so grundsätzlicher Bedeutung sind - etwa als "Dienst der Versöhnung" -, dass sie schon immer im Rahmen der Paulusbriefe ihren besonderen Rang hatten. Das Besondere des Kommentars ist, dass er die einzelnen enthaltenen Briefe im Rahmen der gesamten Korrespondenz des Paulus mit Korinth interpretiert, aber ausschließlich in diesem Kontext. Es wird also nur vorausgesetzt, was auch Paulus bei den Empfängern selbst voraussetzen konnte.

This interdisciplinary approach thus exposes the conceptual networks in which fear was embedded, challenging reductionist models and opening new perspectives on ancient religious life. By bringing together leading experts from multiple disciplines, the volume advances scholarship on emotions, the sociology of religion, and the intercultural history of religions in antiquity, thereby offering essential insights for future research.
