Israel's Icon of Human Achievement

Studien und Texte zu Antike und Christentum / Studies and Texts in Antiquity and Christianity

Philippa Townsend argues that early Christian ideas about sacrifice were developed within the context of a widespread discursive association between ethnicity, race and sacrifice in ancient Mediterranean texts. She demonstrates that sacrifice was understood to be deeply effective in boundary-making between ethnic groups and in the creation, sustenance, and sometimes destruction, of lineages and peoples. The author focuses on a series of case studies from the second century BCE to the fourth century CE, across Jewish, Christian, Middle Platonist, and Neoplatonist traditions, including the book of
 Jubilees
, the New Testament Letter to the Hebrews, the
 Gospel of Judas
, and the works of Justin Martyr, Celsus, Origen, Porphyry, Iamblichus, and the Emperor Julian. The study demonstrates how these authors deployed sacrificial and ethnic rhetoric in distinctive ways depending on their own social, political and theological contexts, in order to articulate various conceptions of peoplehood within a changing imperial context. This nexus between ethnic and sacrificial reasoning was fundamental to the development of early Christians' identity, their sacrificial theologies, their development of anti-Jewish supersessionism, and their responses to empire. Far from rejecting or spiritualizing sacrifice or ethnic self-definition, many early Christians viewed sacrifice as a powerful mode of establishing and perpetuating their own sense of peoplehood within the ethnic landscape of the Roman Empire. Furthermore, the rhetoric of universalism and particularism, spirit and flesh, blood and seed, barbarism and civilization that animated these ancient sacrificial and ethnic debates has contributed decisively to modern conceptions of race and religion.

Ethnicity and Sacrifice in the Early Christian World

John, Jesus, and History, Volume 5

Parabiblica

In this study, Ittai Gradel and Nils Arne Pedersen develop a new approach to the apocryphal Testament of Solomon by combining archaeology and textual analysis. The starting point is a group of ten 3rd-century rings, each inscribed in Greek: "Solomon says: 'Watch out!'" The phrase, puzzling as an apotropaic formula, makes sense only in light of the Testament of Solomon, where the king, empowered by a divine ring, subjugates demons. In a climactic episode, Solomon orders two demons to support a massive column until the Day of Judgment - precisely with the words "Watch out!" This unique command, permanently binding the demons, explains its adoption in everyday magical practice.

The rings, securely dated, establish a 2nd-century date for the original version of the text and invite new reflections on its literary shape and development. While the preserved Testament alternates between first-person and third-person narration, the inscriptions suggest that the original form was a longer third-person narrative later abbreviated and reworked. From this basis, the authors develop a theory of its redactional history.

The evidence points toward popular Christianity distinct from the patristic mainstream. Several rings display Christian iconography, one was linked to the pilgrimage site of Abu Mena, and parallels to Jewish Solomonic traditions are also apparent. Alexandria emerges as a plausible place of origin. The interdisciplinary synthesis - archaeology, history of religions, apocryphal studies, and folklore - generates fresh perspectives.

The appendices enrich this contribution with translations of previously inaccessible versions of the Testament of Solomon, including one that contains a newly attested agraphon ascribed to Jesus, as well as a new edition and translation of a Syriac narrative. In this way, the authors significantly reposition the Testament of Solomon within the history of ancient religion and literature.

New Evidence on the Testament of Solomon in Antiquity

The Lost Novel of King Solomon and the Demons

Romano Guardini Werke

Reihe

Matthew Percuoco offers an analysis of the final four chapters of the book of Samuel. Drawing upon the research on the use of various literary devices in biblical scholarship, he proposes that the six sections that comprise 2 Samuel 21-24 serve as a miniature replica of the book of Samuel, which reflects the content and major themes of the book. The author contends that this reflection offers, at the same time, both a theological distillation of the work as a whole and an interpretative lens through which to understand the preceding narrative. This is established through strategic use of inner-biblical allusion and analogical correspondence, whereby the various episodes of the conclusion have been designed to resemble specific sections of the book, while their sequence mirrors the story's progression. The author makes the case that the addition of 2 Samuel 21-24 occurred at a single point in time at a final stage of the composition of the book (during the post-exilic period). He argues that the author/editor used available literary and historical sources to fashion his six-part conclusion, but that the narratives on the outer boundaries were likely composed, or (at least) heavily reworked, by the author himself. Matthew Percuoco offers a discussion of the relationships between the components of 2 Samuel 21-24 and their parallel texts (e.g., Ps 18; 1 Chr 11:11-41; 20:4-8; 21:1-30) and examines instances of literary influence and allusions between 2 Samuel 21-24 and other passages in the books of Genesis-2 Kings. Finally, he suggests that 2 Samuel 21-24 functioned as an important unit within an emerging Enneateuchal corpus.

The Nature and Function of the Samuel Conclusion

The Holy Land is more than a sanctified geographical space that roughly corresponds to the Roman province that has been known as Palaestina since the end of the Bar Kochba War. Instead, it is primarily an idea and imaginative space created by a complex interaction of texts, rituals, and material culture. The authors of this volume's contributions highlight the major role that extracanonical traditions - often misleadingly called apocryphal - which were written and read, celebrated and performed, and embodied in places, buildings, and material culture, have played in the construction of the Holy Land.

Extracanonical Traditions and the Holy Land

Reihe

Few passages in the New Testament have provoked as much debate as the pericope of the woman caught in adultery (John 7:53-8:11). Rejected by some as spurious and regarded by others as problematic, it has often been silenced by questions of authenticity. Onyekachi Ugwu reopens the discussion by applying narrative analysis supported by socio-historical criticism. His study situates the episode within the literary and theological structure of the Gospel of John, demonstrating that it resonates deeply with the Gospel's central motifs. The woman placed before her accusers becomes a symbolic figure for Jesus himself - both stand in the middle, both face judgment, and both reveal the failure of human justice. The author argues that the narrative was transmitted orally and later incorporated by Johannine scribes in full consistency with their theological outlook. Through this perspective, the pericope emerges as an integral part of the Gospel's portrayal of conflict between light and darkness. Rather than a textual anomaly, it is a scene of revelation: a moment where divine mercy confronts human hypocrisy and anticipates the triumph of the cross.

The Woman Caught in Adultery and the Gospel of John

The Woman at the Well - An Unexpected Conversation invites readers into one of the most personal and powerful encounters in Scripture. Through a reflective and thoughtful retelling of John 4, Gary Collings explores the meeting between Jesus and the Samaritan woman in a way that feels intimate, honest, and spiritually fresh.

This book is written for readers who long to go deeper in their faith and see familiar Bible passages with renewed clarity. It speaks to themes of shame, grace, identity, thirst, healing, and redemption, showing how Jesus meets people in their brokenness with both truth and compassion. Ideal for personal reflection, small groups, and church discussion, this book encourages readers to consider their own unexpected conversations with God and the living water only Christ can give.

Volume IV - Writings

Most English Bibles tell you what the text says. They do not show you how the Hebrew works. The Hebrew Foundations Bible is designed to change that.
This interlinear edition of the Torah places the Hebrew text at the center of the reading experience, equipping readers to engage Scripture in its original language-even at an early stage of learning. Each Hebrew word is supported by a clear transliteration, a disambiguated Strong's number, and a concise lexical gloss, enabling readers to recognize vocabulary, follow grammatical structure, and begin thinking in Hebrew as they read.
Unlike traditional study Bibles, the English translation does not dominate the page. A narrow column based on the World English Bible provides contextual support while intentionally keeping the focus on the Hebrew text. This design encourages a gradual shift away from dependence on translation toward direct interaction with the language itself.
The layout is built for progression. Beginners gain orientation, intermediate readers reinforce patterns, and advanced readers track structure and nuance more closely. Over time, the reader moves from relying on aids to reading with increasing confidence and fluency.
This edition also includes variant notes highlighting significant textual differences preserved in the Masoretic tradition, ancient versions, and modern textual scholarship. Introductory material and reference charts provide guidance on the Hebrew writing system, transliteration conventions, and essential grammatical features.
The Hebrew Foundations Bible is intended for students, pastors, teachers, and serious readers who desire more than translation-those who want to see how the Hebrew text actually works. Volume IV contains the Writings: Psalms, Proverbs, Job, Song of Songs, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, Esther, Daniel, Ezra, Nehemiah, 1 Chronicles, and 2 Chronicles
