Flynn I: Mortal Kombat: Flawless Victory

Mortal Kombat: Flawless Victory

A Visual History of the Iconic Series

An Introduction

Cultural Theory and Popular Culture

This open access book offersa cultural history of lawsuits that traces the development of French performance rights from la Belle Époque, throughthe Roaring Twenties, and into thePost-War period. It does so by analysing the ways in which performers, composers, and playwrights took to French courtrooms, sought attention in mass media, and participated in political debates to claim their rights to create and control musical and theatrical performance. In 19th-century France, composers and playwrights organised in member-run societies that successfully used authors' rights legislation to curb the power of theatre managers. By the turn of the 20th century, these so-called collective management organisations had transformed French cultural industries by building out structures of royalty collection and improving litigation practices. From the café-concert culture in 19th-century Montmartre and the rise of modern celebrity culture, to mass media and radio entertainment, the book traces precedent-setting litigation that defined who creates and controls performance. The book challenges previous narratives that centre the individualisation of authors in the expansion of the international copyright regime while neglecting performers. Instead, it reveals the ways in which the personality and individuality of performers have played a constitutive role in discourses about genius, technology, and legal categories. Performance as Intellectual Property is for anyone interested in the emergence of modern European cultural industries and the relationships between intellectual property systems, creativity, and art. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com Open access was funded by the European Research Council.

The Straight Mind

Relato de un náufrago / The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor

How the social organization of Europe and China shaped their divergent economic and political trajectories over the past millennium In the eleventh century, when Europe was still backward and poor, China was a rich and sophisticated civilization. Yet Europe became the birthplace of democracy and the Industrial Revolution, driving the Great Enrichment, while China stagnated until the end of the twentieth century and was always ruled by autocracies. Two Paths to Prosperity traces the emergence of two very different social organizations in premodern China and Europe--the clan and the corporation--showing how they were key factors in the economic and political divergence of these two great civilizations. In this landmark book, three leading economists offer a bold new account of why Europe and China evolved along such different trajectories. In the early Middle Ages, public goods like risk sharing, religious worship, education, and conflict resolution were provided by nonstate organizations in both societies. China increasingly relied on kin-based cooperation within clans, while weaker kinship ties in Europe gave rise to corporations such as guilds, universities, and self-governing towns. Despite performing similar functions, clans and corporations were built on very different principles--with lasting consequences until today. Providing a novel answer to a fundamental question in economic and political history, Two Paths to Prosperity shows how extended kinship in Chinese society facilitated the consolidation of autocracy and hindered innovation and economic development, and how corporations in Europe influenced emerging state institutions and set the stage for the Industrial Revolution.

How To Live An Extraordinary Life

Why Britain's energy path gave rise to an ideology of endless growth Despite the warnings of climate scientists, the world remains dangerously addicted to fossil fuel. Why has it been so difficult to break this habit? In a major new account, Fredrik Albritton Jonsson suggests that the planetary emergency has profound historical roots reaching back to the making of the first fossil fuel economy in eighteenth-century Britain. Rather than look for a single dramatic rupture centered on the steam-powered factory system, in Infinite Coal Albritton Jonsson shows that there was a much more gradual and multidimensional development of the first coal economy, stretching from the deep mine and ironworks to the household and the global food system. Albritton Jonsson explores not only the material forces behind the British energy path but also how ideas about fossil fuel energy reoriented politics and society toward a new ideal of growth. At the same time an environmental and political history of Britain’s energy transformation, Infinite Coal explains why and how coal became so deeply embedded in our way of life. Albritton Jonsson argues that the most important legacy of Britain’s early fossil fuel economy is fossil cornucopianism—the idea of a bountiful, never-ending energy source—which still haunts modern politics and economics.
