Born from a desire for creative freedom, web series often circumvent screen industry gatekeepers and attract smaller, niche audiences; but fewer views do not necessarily make the format, or its audience engagement, less valuable. This book looks behind the scenes to uncover how and why audiences engaged with nine Australian web series released between 2020 and 2023. Interviews with web series producers reveal their motivations, audience acquisition and maintenance strategies, funding methods, and platform specific approaches. These first-hand accounts are then compared with viewership metrics and the content of audience commentary, resulting in the illumination of social, cultural, and industrial values of audience engagement with these innovative productions. This book identifies key factors that influence audience behaviours such as perceived authenticity, platform choice, and the types, forms, and costs of engaging with web series. These factors are considered with respect to online community building, relationships between creators and audiences, and commercial uses of the format, resulting in the creation of a typology of web series audiences. Readers benefit from understanding the value and characteristics of each type of viewer across a diverse range of examples featuring differing audience demographics, zero to over $1 million budgets, and platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok. Vibrant narratives are used to convey each series' backstory, providing an informative and engaging reading experience for screen industry practitioners, marketing and broadcast professionals, and aspiring filmmakers. Academics and students in the fields of media studies, audience engagement, screen production, creative labour and entrepreneurship, social media, and algorithmic culture will also benefit from this research.

An innovative approach for understanding how law matters in contemporary social movements that rise to meet the twin challenges of American democracy: promoting liberal values of equality and inclusion, while fortifying the rule of law itself. Fifty years after the Civil Rights Movement, America confronts a new democratic reckoning. What role do-and should-lawyers play in strengthening collective action at this pivotal moment? In Lawyers and Movements, Scott L. Cummings offers an innovative answer to this age-old question, breaking from the legacy of legal liberalism to reveal the essential, yet underappreciated, work of lawyers in social struggle-redefining legal mobilization in transformative times. Building from a sweeping analysis of progressive legal theory and practice, Cummings challenges foundational critiques of lawyers as inaccurate and ill-suited to the current context. In response, he advances a new theory of legal mobilization in which control over law is at the heart of movements rising to meet the twin challenges of contemporary liberalism: promoting inclusion and equity, while fortifying democratic institutions. A call to radically rethink how lawyers contribute to progressive change, Lawyers and Movements asserts a timely challenge to democracy in crisis.

Passionately Transforming Management

The allure of crime is undeniable. From news headlines to true crime podcasts, crime has a way of entrapping our interest and imagination. An exploration of the lessons that managers can learn from organised crime, Passionately Transforming Management with Crime addresses how criminal enterprises engage with leadership and innovation, and how popular representations of crime affect our perceptions of management and organisation. Alf Rehn's enticing text explores crime from a number of angles - historical, cultural and economic - to better understand the link between business and crime, and the lessons that can be shared. It looks to crime both as a source of inspiration for entrepreneurship and organisation, and as an influence on management through iconographies, legends and storytelling. The book also debunks common misconceptions about the business of crime, and touches on the dangers of romanticising criminal endeavours. Following an examination of criminals in history and fiction, Passionately Transforming Management with Crime progresses to discuss why we are attracted to crime, how crime mirrors legitimate businesses, and what we can learn from the criminal underworld, both real and fictional. Passionately Transforming Management with Crime offers a compelling and novel approach to management that provides valuable insights for practicing managers, professionals, advanced postgraduate students and scholars in Management, Critical Management Studies and Organisation Studies. Witty and engaging, this text is a fascinating read for those interested in discovering the management lessons to be learnt from Jean Genet, Biggie Smalls and Grand Theft Auto.

Passionately Transforming Management: Crime

Who Does She Think She Is?

This open access book offersa cultural history of lawsuits that traces the development of French performance rights from la Belle Époque, throughthe Roaring Twenties, and into thePost-War period. It does so by analysing the ways in which performers, composers, and playwrights took to French courtrooms, sought attention in mass media, and participated in political debates to claim their rights to create and control musical and theatrical performance. In 19th-century France, composers and playwrights organised in member-run societies that successfully used authors' rights legislation to curb the power of theatre managers. By the turn of the 20th century, these so-called collective management organisations had transformed French cultural industries by building out structures of royalty collection and improving litigation practices. From the café-concert culture in 19th-century Montmartre and the rise of modern celebrity culture, to mass media and radio entertainment, the book traces precedent-setting litigation that defined who creates and controls performance. The book challenges previous narratives that centre the individualisation of authors in the expansion of the international copyright regime while neglecting performers. Instead, it reveals the ways in which the personality and individuality of performers have played a constitutive role in discourses about genius, technology, and legal categories. Performance as Intellectual Property is for anyone interested in the emergence of modern European cultural industries and the relationships between intellectual property systems, creativity, and art. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com Open access was funded by the European Research Council.

Cultural appropriation is one of the most contested issues of our time - but what does it actually feel like to have your culture taken, repackaged, and sold back to you? In this book, Rina Arya moves beyond familiar debates to place the lived experiences of minoritised communities at the centre of the discussion. Drawing on postcolonial theory, lived religion, cultural studies, and her experiences as a British South Asian, she examines how cultural forms are commodified, transformed, and returned to their communities with renewed authority. Arya argues that the deepest harms of cultural appropriation are not only economic or representational but also psychological, reshaping how people understand their culture and identity. Combining rigorous scholarship with personal testimony, this book challenges readers to rethink who has the authority to define culture - and what is lost when that authority shifts away from the communities from which culture originates.

Reclaiming the Debate on Cultural Appropriation

An expert’s exposé on the harms of Big Porn Extreme porn is ruining lives. What can we do about it? 'Fizzes with righteous rage' The Times 'Couldn’t be more important... Urgent, bold and unflinching.' Laura Bates, author of Everyday Sexism Never more than a click away, porn is virtually inescapable. With minimal moderation, mainstream platforms don’t just host it, they push ever more extreme content into view, whether you want it or not. The consequences are profound. Our most intimate relationships are being manipulated, our desires exploited. An entire generation is learning about sex not from experience or trust but from Pornhub, where fantasies are constructed by degrading, misogynistic and racist ideals that eroticise masculine dominance and normalise sexual violence. Meanwhile, non-consensual porn is destroying women’s lives, a threat now supercharged by deepfakes and AI. We’re told we live in an age of sexual freedom, but this isn’t true. We are fighting not only for autonomy over our bodies and desires, but for gender equality itself. To move forward means confronting and dismantling both the patriarchy and the porn industry that sustains it. 'Read this book – then encourage your partner to read it too.' Glamour
