Six o'clock in the morning, Sunday, at the worn-out end of January. In a small room in an Oxford college, cold and dim and full of quiet, an undergraduate student works on an essay about Shakespeare's sonnets. Annabel has a meticulously planned routine for her day - work, yoga, meditation, long walks; no apples after meals, no coffee on an empty stomach - but finds it repeatedly thrown off course. Despite her efforts, she cannot stop her thoughts slipping off their intended track into the shadows of elaborate erotic fantasies. And as the essay's deadline looms, so too does the irrepressible presence of other people: Annabel's boyfriend Rich, keen to come and visit her; her family and friends who demand her attention; and darker crises, obliquely glimpsed, all threatening to disturb the much-cherished quiet in her mind. Exquisitely crafted, wryly comic, and completely original, Practice is a novel about the life of the mind and the life of the body, about the repercussions of a rigid routine and the deep pleasures of literature.

Practice

Judith Butler shows how an ethic of nonviolence must be connected to a broader political struggle for social equality. Further, it argues that nonviolence is often misunderstood as a passive practice that emanates from a calm region of the soul, or as an individualist ethical relation to existing forms of power. But, in fact, nonviolence is an ethical position found in the midst of the political field. An aggressive form of nonviolence accepts that hostility is part of our psychic constitution, but values ambivalence as a way of checking the conversion of aggression into violence. One contemporary challenge to a politics of nonviolence points out that there is a difference of opinion on what counts as violence and nonviolence. The distinction between them can be mobilised in the service of ratifying the state's monopoly on violence. Considering nonviolence as an ethical problem within a political philosophy requires a critique of individualism as well as an understanding of the psychosocial dimensions of violence. Butler draws upon Foucault, Fanon, Freud, and Benjamin to consider how the interdiction against violence fails to include lives regarded as ungrievable. By considering how ?racial phantasms' inform justifications of state and administrative violence, Butler tracks how violence is often attributed to those who are most severely exposed to its lethal effects. The struggle for nonviolence is found in movements for social transformation that reframe the grievability of lives in light of social equality and whose ethical claims follow from an insight into the interdependency of life as the basis of social and political equality.

The Force of Nonviolence

"Liberal universality" is the dominant framework of human rights in the literature. This paradigm asserts that human rights norms must be interpreted by prioritizing individualism, secularism, and autonomy in all spheres of life. According to this perspective, religiously grounded and duty-oriented visions should not be part of human rights standards, and in some cases, they must be excluded from international debates. This situation is due to a lack of academic scrutiny of the difference between human rights as internationally recognized norms and human rights standards or interpretations as developed by international mechanisms through this paradigm. The case study of the current development of sexual and reproductive health and rights reveals key problems with this interpretative framework: its questionable neutrality, its reduced notion of viewpoint diversity, and its top-down approach that disregards people's real concerns. This book proposes to go back to basics by rediscovering the notion of "pluralistic universality" of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948, which welcomes interdependent and religiously grounded worldviews that are more compatible with non-Western cultures and some Western traditions. In this sense, the book encourages a redefinition of the universality of human rights in the light of the right to self-determination, as a tool to foster bottom-up approaches, intercultural dialogue, and global consensus for the development of universally acceptable human rights standards. In this way, these standards will enjoy greater legitimacy because they will reflect an international agreement that is responsive to local realities and one that accepts reasonable disagreement in controversial issues.

The increasing number of voices questioning the legitimacy of the implementation of human rights will lead to a widespread loss of faith in the concept of human right itself. Reverting this tendency is an urgent task that reveals the gap between the norms ruling the monitoring bodies and their actual performance. In accepting this challenge, this book will be a necessary source of study for anyone concerned with the purpose and practice of human rights.

In our busy and hurried lives, we are losing the ability to be inactive. Human existence becomes fully absorbed by activity - even leisure, treated as a respite from work, becomes part of the same logic. Intense life today means first of all more performance or more consumption. We have forgotten that it is precisely inactivity, which does not produce anything, that represents an intense and radiant form of life.
For Byung-Chul Han, inactivity constitutes the human. Without moments of pause or hesitation, acting deteriorates into blind action and reaction. When life follows the rule of stimulus-response and need-satisfaction, it atrophies into pure survival: naked biological life. If we lose the ability to be inactive, we begin to resemble machines that simply function. True life begins when concern for survival, for the exigencies of mere life, ends. "Unsere Zukunft liegt auf dem Wasser!", prophezeite Kaiser Wilhelm II. den Deutschen. Bis 1914 stieg seine Marine unter der Leitung von Admiral Alfred von Tirpitz zur zweitgrößten der Welt auf. Während die Hochphase der wilhelminischen Flottenrüstung eingehend erforscht worden ist, lag das Schicksal des Flottenprogramms während des Ersten Weltkriegs bisher weitgehend im Dunkeln. Welche strategischen Schlüsse zog die Kaiserliche Marine aus den Erfahrungen des Seekrieges? Wie gestaltete sich die Weiterentwicklung der Schiffstypen? Was waren die Kriegsziele der Marine? Benjamin Miertzschkes Dissertation, die auf einer umfassenden Auswertung der Aktenbestände des Reichsmarineamtes beruht, liefert Antworten auf diese Fragen.

Aus dem Judentum kommt man nicht heraus. Rahel Levin Varnhagen (1771-1833) war eine Jüdin, die mit viel Witz und Intelligenz den bekanntesten Berliner Salon ihrer Zeit leitete. Sie war auch eine eifrige Briefeschreiberin. Ende der 1920er-Jahre entdeckte Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) Varnhagens Werk und entschloss sich, ihr eine ungewöhnliche Biografie zu widmen, die ein literarisches Experiment sein wollte und gleichzeitig zu einer politischen Studie wurde. Sie steht am Beginn von Arendts lebenslanger Beschäftigung mit der Geschichte der deutschen Juden und ihrer gescheiterten Assimilation. Die Arbeit an diesem Buch begleitete Arendt in die Emigration 1933 nach Paris. Arendts Varnhagen-Biografie wurde 1957 zunächst in einer englischen Übersetzung veröffentlicht; 1959 erschien das Buch erstmals beim Piper Verlag auf Deutsch. Herausgegeben von Thomas Meyer. Mit einem Nachwort von Liliane Weissberg.
