Die Arbeit widmet sich der Geschichte der deutschsprachigen Geschichtslyrik von 1850 bis 1918. Obwohl Geschichtslyrik im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert eine wichtige Rolle spielte, wurde die Gattung bislang noch nicht umfassend untersucht. Ein wichtiges Ergebnis der Arbeit besteht darin, dass die in früheren Forschungsbeiträgen angedeutete These eines 'Niedergangs' der Geschichtslyrik in der literarischen Moderne stark relativiert werden muss. Um die Gattungsgeschichte zu erhellen, wird ein über 1800 Texte umfassendes, auf Geschichtslyrikanthologien basierendes Korpus untersucht. Dabei kommen neben qualitativen Einzeltextanalysen und -interpretationen auch digitale, quantitative Verfahren zum Einsatz, womit hier vor allem die manuelle Annotation sämtlicher Korpustexte und die statistische Auswertung der Annotationsdaten gemeint ist. Jenseits der eigentlichen Texte setzt sich die Arbeit auch mit der Rezeption und Vermittlung von Geschichtslyrik im Untersuchungszeitraum auseinander. Beansprucht wird, nicht nur einen Beitrag zur Geschichte der Geschichtslyrik zu leisten, sondern auch am Beispiel dieser Gattung zu demonstrieren und zu reflektieren, wie sich Gattungsgeschichtsschreibung im Allgemeinen sinnvoll betreiben lässt.
