Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), Nobel Laureate and polymath, is one of the most eminent Indian writers of world literature. Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain (1924) is a social comedy with tragic overtones, providing a portrait of Europe in the first decades of the twentieth century. The novel recounts how an apparently simple North German engineer, Hans Castorp, comes to a tuberculosis sanatorium in Davos, Switzerland, intending to visit his sick cousin, and ends up staying for seven years. He matures intellectually and emotionally, encountering love and death amid a cast of vivid characters who are portrayed with Dickensian humour and sophisticated irony, until he is jerked out of his torpor by the outbreak of the First World War.

This translation is accompanied by an accessible introduction by Ritchie Robertson, and detailed notes explaining the many cultural and historical references in the text.

Storytelling for a World in Turmoil

Those of us who identify as multi-cultural and exist in-between and across places, spaces, cultures and languages are in search of poetic means to understand and represent the experiences of being an insider-outsider. This volume responds to that challenge: taking Venice and the Veneto as a creative site, the author demonstrates how poetry focussed on hybrid, interstitial subjectivity can be mapped into this storied location. Using the structuring metaphor of the archipelago, the book exemplifies how the islands of the Venetian lagoon reflect the way that poetry - as individual works that coalesce to form a focussed collection - can be used to create a cartography of the self that is multiple but interconnected. Drawing upon scholarship around literary nomadism, flânerie, self-translation and cultural geography, the author shows how a personal relationship to a creative space opens a Third Space that challenges fixed ideas about belonging, alienation and nationality. In doing so, in-between-ness is revealed as a generative position from which to write and translate poetry.

A Poet’s Guide to Venice and the Veneto

Hot Type is the epic story of the magnificent 19th-century machine that rendered Gutenberg's movable type obsolete and opened the portal to the long century of mass media. The Linotype mechanized the 400-year-old process of setting type one laborious letter at a time, and thus ignited an explosion of newspaper, book, and magazine empires. This is a tale populated with wondrous characters: tragic inventors, malign media moguls, hand-typesetters called the Swifts who turned their craft into a spectator sport, and authors and journalists who chronicled the turmoil of their time, their every word molded into metal type by what some viewed as a thinking machine. This revolution in media technology helped to propel Mark Twain into literary celebrity, but it also cost him his fortune - as well as his sense of humor and optimism. The era of the Linotype was a bridge between Twain's Gilded Age with its tycoons of steam, steel, and wire and today's Gilded Age with its barons of bits and AI. Its history provides an opportunity to reflect on how technology changes culture just as new technologies - the internet and artificial intelligence -manufacture their endless streams of words today.

This collection, in honour of Julia Bray, experiments with juxtaposed articles, quotations, translations and lines of poetry to let readers create connections in the same way authors did a thousand years ago in Arabic. The collaboration is inspired by the ongoing work of Julia Bray, which continues to demonstrate the rewards of taking what we read seriously. The field of Arabic studies is increasingly rejecting a hard line between the modern and the premodern. This book is an intervention in that development - arguing that the premodern can structure contemporary thinking. It offers translations, commentaries and discussions of important and insufficiently known primary texts together with the original Arabic text of poems. These cross-genre and cross-disciplinary connections can catalyse future research and show how a key feature of the Arabic literary tradition is relevant to how we think about scholarship today. Thomas Mann wrote Doctor Faustus (1947) in American exile during and just after the Second World War. A prominent and long-standing defender of democracy, he sought to understand, in cultural and intellectual terms, how Germany had succumbed to Nazism. Mann structures his story through references to the German legend of Faust and his pact with the Devil. The life of the solitary composer, an ultimately tragic figure, is recounted by his friend and biographer, who represents a sadly ineffectual humanism, and whose social activities provide a panorama of middle-class German society in the early twentieth century. 

Ritchie Robertson's new English translation is accompanied by detailed annotations and an introduction illuminating the themes of the novel.
