José Hernández's long narrative poems The Gaucho Martín Fierro (1872) and Martín Fierro's Return (1879) relate the often harrowing story of a gaucho's misfortunes against the backdrop of Argentina's nation-building a few decades after its independence from Spain. The first poem relates Martín Fierro's forced conscription, the hardships of irregular military service, and his desertion, followed by the discovery of his home and family gone upon his return, murder, and life as a fugitive from the law among the same tribe he was earlier drafted to exterminate. The second continues the narrative, taking in an epic singing contest against an itinerant musician, and culminating in Fierro and his sons going their separate ways in an attempt to live out lives of peace under assumed names.

G. J. Racz provides the first metrical, rhyming translation into English in almost a century. Considered classics of Latin American literature, the works embrace the psychology of their oppressed 'common man' protagonist while depicting the larger sociopolitical forces slowly marginalizing his once vibrant cohort of skilled horsemen, itinerant cowhands, and modest livestock ranchers.

 Menschheitsdämmerung
 - erstmalig herausgegeben von Kurt Pinthus im Jahr 1919 - ist die wichtigste Anthologie expressionistischer Lyrik. Als solche hat sie das Bild, das die Literaturgeschichte von expressionistischer Dichtung zeichnet, entscheidend geprägt. Pinthus' Auswahl an Gedichten kann als Rückblick auf die damals bereits ein Jahrzehnt währende expressionistische Dichtung gesehen werden, deren Vertreter zwischenzeitlich teils andere Wege eingeschlagen hatten, teils verstorben (nicht zuletzt als Soldaten im Ersten Weltkrieg gefallen) waren. So zieht die Sammlung eine Bilanz der neuen Dichtung der damals jungen Generation - und entfaltet programmatisch kanonisierende Wirkung.
 
 Pinthus' Zusammenstellung kann als eigenes Gesamtkunstwerk verstanden werden, da er der Form der bloß willkürlich zusammentragenden Anthologie die Schaffung eines eigenen, in sich stimmigen Werks entgegenstellt, um die großen gemeinsamen Linien der expressionististischen Dichter*innengeneration zu betonen. Unter dem Stichwort der Symphonie, aus dem sich die vier Teile der 
 Menschheitsdämmerung
 ergeben, werden die enthaltenen Gedichte von 22 Dichtern und einer Dichterin (Else Lasker-Schüler) thematisch so zusammengestellt, dass ihre Stimmenvielfalt, dem Zusammenspiel von Instrumenten in einem Orchester gleichend, zu einer in sich geschlossenen Komposition wird.
 
 Mehr als 100 Jahre nach der Erstausgabe diskutieren die Beiträge auf Basis aktueller Forschungszugänge den Status von Pinthus' wegweisender Anthologie neu: Sie gehen dem Konstruktionsprinzip der Sammlung auf den Grund, beleuchten ihre literarischen, politischen und personellen Kontexte und weisen nicht zuletzt auf die Leerstellen hin, welche die von Pinthus nicht ausgewählten Dichter
 innen
 hinterlassen. Neben der Kriegslyrik August Stramms und der Sonderrolle Franz Werfels geht es um den Dichter Ernst Wilhelm Lotz, die Lyrikanthologie

Adab is not an English word, but it could become one. This collection, in honour of Julia Bray, experiments with juxtaposed articles, quotations, translations and lines of poetry to let readers create connections in the same way authors did a thousand years ago in Arabic. The collaboration is inspired by the ongoing work of Julia Bray, which continues to demonstrate the rewards of taking what we read seriously. The field of Arabic studies is increasingly rejecting a hard line between the modern and the premodern. This book is an intervention in that development - arguing that the premodern can structure contemporary thinking. It offers translations, commentaries and discussions of important and insufficiently known primary texts together with the original Arabic text of poems. These cross-genre and cross-disciplinary connections can catalyse future research and show how a key feature of the Arabic literary tradition is relevant to how we think about scholarship today. The chapters provide readers with both an academic resource and an intellectual conversation with the past.

Das Echo ist im 17. Jahrhundert nicht nur im gesamten literarischen Gattungsspektrum anzutreffen, sondern repräsentiert zentrale Aspekte eines modernen dichterischen Selbstverständnisses. Diese Studie macht die Vielfalt der Echo-Symboliken und -Funktionalisierungen im deutschen Barock zugänglich, insbesondere für die Zeit von 1640 bis 1700. Dabei wird das Gebrauchsschrifttum erstmals angemessen berücksichtigt. Der literarische Echo-Dialog schwankt antithetisch zwischen sozialem Ausschluss und kommunikativer Hoffnungssuggestion. In der italienischen und französischen Renaissance-Lyrik dominiert der Ausschluss: Die Echo-Begegnung im einsamen Naturraum ist Signum des isolierten Subjekts. Diese Poetik wird im deutschen 17. Jahrhundert sukzessive in ihr Gegenteil verkehrt. Ausgehend von konsolatorischen Deutungen wandelt sich das Echo zu einem Paradigma der Diskursivität und Vergemeinschaftung. Byron concealed himself in various literary disguises, a process he called "mobility." In this study of influences on Byron's verse and Byron's European impact, I explore these borrowings and transformations as they manifested themselves in his reading. At issue is the very concept of romantic poetic voice. Framing himself in the tradition of the Irish yet cosmopolitan Thomas Moore, Byron adopted continental guises, imitating both Italian writers and political heroes, such as Dante, Machiavelli, and Tasso. In establishing an Italian identity, Byron relied upon the Italian writers he translated (Pulci, Dante), Thomas Moore's "Fudge Family in Paris," and Shelley's "Julian and Maddalo," as well as Goethe's Faust. This Europeanization of Byron should not conceal the fact that Byron adopted poses from his predecessors, such as Walter Scott, in order to fashion himself as a Scottish poet who also happened to be English. Byron became the writers he read: Moore, Shelley, Wordsworth, Scott, Foscolo, Lady Morgan, and Madame de Staël. Those who imitated Byron, particularly Alexander Pushkin and Adam Mickiewicz, became the best interpreters of his literary example while transforming it, and explained what it meant to be a Harold in Muscovite Cloak, or a Polish Byron, to be both delimited and emancipated by Byron's example.
