Bauwelt Fundamente

Politisch hochaktuelles internationales Thema

Fearless Forms, Fearful Concrete

The book documents the most exciting projects in Amsterdam's current architectural scene, including floating houses, hotels in former bridge keepers' cottages, and carefully renovated cultural monuments such as the Felix Meritis or a bicycle garage under a harbour basin. The built showcase projects provide an insight into Amsterdam's urban resilience and innovative approaches to housing. Supplementary essays and interviews with the protagonists of architecture take a look behind the scenes of their ideas workshop. They focus, for example, on new forms of housing, adaptive architectural concepts and the rediscovery of the former port and commercial areas on the banks of the IJ. The contributions complete the picture of a vibrant and forward-looking architectural culture.

The Urban Book Series

This book provides a framework for understanding and evaluating the notion of 'good' in urban planning, addressing its role in securing planning legitimacy and shaping urban development practice. It unfolds how the multilayered nature of good is defined in planning practice. By exploring the ethical dimension of what is considered good, the work offers a systematic approach to navigating the complex moral landscape of decision-making. At a moment when protests around the world increasingly highlight dissatisfaction with the displacement of public interest in favor of profit-driven agendas, this book provides a tool for critical assessment of practices and envisioning alternative, more just urban futures.

Using case studies from Belgrade, Serbia, this book explores how 'good' is formed, identifying the aspects that guide value judgment about what is considered good. These aspects are perceived as magnetic poles of the ethical compass, interpreted here as a tool for comprehensive ethical orientation among the forces of power, public interest, justice, dialogue, morphology, and politics. The book establishes a theoretical framework for evaluating existing practice in conjunction with the multi-layered nature of good defined through different normative theories and approaches. It proposes a method for moving from evaluation to action by formulating recommendations to improve urban development practice. The specific cases examine typical spatial development practices by the private sector and the public sector in order to provide a basis for the evaluation framework, acquiring evidence-based answers, and demonstrating how recommendations can be defined. These insights support a theory-informed but practice-oriented framework useful to urban planners, policymakers, and researchers interested in the ethical dimensions of the practice of urban planning and development.

Unfolding the Good

Port cities lie at the intersection of global trade, urban development, and environmental change. While connecting maritime networks with regional and global economies, they face growing challenges related to climate change, resource management, urban transformation, and social inclusion. In this context, stakeholders play a central role in shaping sustainable port-city development. This book examines how stakeholder engagement, governance, collaboration, and coordination contribute to sustainable development. Drawing on an interdisciplinary qualitative study of Tangier, a rapidly transforming port city, it explores how port expansion, urban development, and institutional transformation shape stakeholder relationships and sustainability.Adopting a stakeholder-centred perspective, the book examines how participation, governance, innovation, and coordination influence contemporary port-city transformation. The Tangier case provides broader insights into the conditions supporting more integrated, inclusive, and resilient port-city governance.Connecting empirical analysis with international perspectives, the book contributes to debates on sustainable port cities, port-city relationships, stakeholder governance, and territorial transformation. It highlights that sustainability depends not only on infrastructure and strategic planning, but also on how stakeholders are engaged and integrated into governance processes.Jihane Salim

Governance, Collaboration, and Innovation for Urban-Port Sustainability

Stakeholders and Sustainable Port Cities

This book examines earthquake risk, disaster governance, and urban resilience through the case of Istanbul, a megacity facing significant seismic threats. This book offers an interdisciplinary analysis of public policy, disaster management, governance, migration, social vulnerability, and technological innovation, providing practical insights for earthquake preparedness and risk reduction in large urban centers.Organized into four thematic parts, the volume explores the role of public institutions, state responsibilities, multi-actor governance, gender-sensitive disaster policies, and the continuity of public services. It further examines local government initiatives, civil society engagement, public–civil partnerships, migration and displacement scenarios, vulnerable populations, and disaster response planning. The final section highlights innovation, digital technologies, urban mobility forecasting, and startup-driven solutions for earthquake prediction and risk management. By focusing on Istanbul as a model case, this book is an essential resource for researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and students interested in disaster governance, earthquake preparedness, urban resilience, and sustainable cities.Fahri Özsungur

The Case of Istanbul

Risks, Policies, Strategies in Anticipating Earthquakes

Slums, informal settlements, and other unplanned habitats are seen as the antithesis of the metropolis. Matias Echanove and Rahul Srivastava, founders of the design practice urbz, explore how such neighbourhoods and their inhabitants have been unfairly dismissed when they should in fact be under-stood as partners in the story of cities and urban development.

China's Experience in Eco Cities and Green Transport
