La Naturaleza Del Valor Y El Valor De La Naturaleza

PoliMI SpringerBriefs

SpringerBriefs in Applied Sciences and Technology

This book unpacks the process of financialization in the planning of urban mega-projects. On one hand, it explores the literature on real estate finance within the context of planning; on the other, it showcases two case studies to explain how the financialization of urban mega-projects operates. By framing urban mega-projects, real estate, and financialization trajectories, the book examines unconventional planning and real estate concepts nowadays affecting urban studies. Conceptualizations of urban mega-projects, planning tools, as well as real estate markets, assets, and funds are widely described. Moreover, the case comparative analysis of the property financialization and spatial planning of Amsterdam South Axis and Milano Innovation District provides evidence-based and usable knowledge for both scholars and practitioners, by illustrating aspects of plan-making, decision-making and business strategies usually unknown in the field of urban policy analysis.

The Financialization and Planning of Urban Mega-Projects

Can architecture ever be democratic? An elegant, timely new theory of politics and urban design from the acclaimed author of What is Populism? and Democracy Rules Building requires power and resources - then, once created, our environment structures how we relate to each other. But what would a distinctly democratic built environment look like? Should we prioritize an inclusive process by which as many citizens as possible can decide how a building is designed? Or is it about how architecture and urban spaces can best represent democracy to citizens - and how building and city planning can concretely facilitate democratic action by citizens? In Street, Palace, Square, political theorist Jan-Werner Müller offers an elegant new account of architecture and democracy that draws on examples from Washington DC to Dhaka, Cairo to Berlin. Ranging widely across political philosophy, history and design, he shows that bringing architecture and democracy together has an unexpected benefit. As we reflect on spaces and symbols on the one hand and our understandings of democracy on the other, we might see possibilities we did not see before: how to create spaces for citizens to make politics their own.

The Architecture of Democratic Spaces

Street, Palace, Square

Slums, informal settlements, and other unplanned habitats are seen as the antithesis of the metropolis. Matias Echanove and Rahul Srivastava, founders of the design practice urbz, explore how such neighbourhoods and their inhabitants have been unfairly dismissed when they should in fact be under-stood as partners in the story of cities and urban development.

Contributions to Regional Science

This book comprehensively explores the design and use of railway systems through theoretical, spatial, economic, and regional lenses. Bridging disciplines such as geography, economics, and planning, it examines railway infrastructure's role in shaping regional development, urbanisation, and connectivity. Featuring interdisciplinary case studies from diverse global contexts, the book integrates historical perspectives with forward-looking analyses to address contemporary challenges in transport planning and policy. It serves as an essential resource for graduate students, researchers, and practitioners seeking to understand the dynamic interplay between railways, spatial organisation, and economic growth.

Politisch hochaktuelles internationales Thema

The Urban Book Series

This book provides a framework for understanding and evaluating the notion of 'good' in urban planning, addressing its role in securing planning legitimacy and shaping urban development practice. It unfolds how the multilayered nature of good is defined in planning practice. By exploring the ethical dimension of what is considered good, the work offers a systematic approach to navigating the complex moral landscape of decision-making. At a moment when protests around the world increasingly highlight dissatisfaction with the displacement of public interest in favor of profit-driven agendas, this book provides a tool for critical assessment of practices and envisioning alternative, more just urban futures.

Using case studies from Belgrade, Serbia, this book explores how 'good' is formed, identifying the aspects that guide value judgment about what is considered good. These aspects are perceived as magnetic poles of the ethical compass, interpreted here as a tool for comprehensive ethical orientation among the forces of power, public interest, justice, dialogue, morphology, and politics. The book establishes a theoretical framework for evaluating existing practice in conjunction with the multi-layered nature of good defined through different normative theories and approaches. It proposes a method for moving from evaluation to action by formulating recommendations to improve urban development practice. The specific cases examine typical spatial development practices by the private sector and the public sector in order to provide a basis for the evaluation framework, acquiring evidence-based answers, and demonstrating how recommendations can be defined. These insights support a theory-informed but practice-oriented framework useful to urban planners, policymakers, and researchers interested in the ethical dimensions of the practice of urban planning and development.

Fearless Forms, Fearful Concrete
