Nestor Machno war zehn Monate alt, als sein Vater starb. Aufgrund der Armut seiner Familie konnte er nur in den Wintermonaten die Schule besuchen, während er in den Sommermonaten bei benachbarten Gutsherren im heute ukrainischen Oblast Saporischschja als Schafhirte arbeitete. Durch die seit der Russischen Revolution von 1905 härter gewordenen Repressionen des Zarenreichs wandte er sich, inspiriert von revolutionären Gruppen, dem Anarchismus und den Ideen Bakunins und Kropotkins zu. 1906, im Alter von achtzehn Jahren, wurde er erstmals verhaftet, 1910 ein weiteres Mal und zum Tode verurteilt, aber dann zu lebenslanger Haft begnadigt. 1917 gelang ihm die Flucht, ein Jahr darauf wurde die Ukraine durch den Frieden von Brest-Litowsk politisch und ökonomisch von Sowjetrussland getrennt. Wassili Golowanow schildert mitreißend vor dem Hintergrund der Wirren der Geschichte die kaum zu fassende Biografie Machnos bis zu seinem Tod im Pariser Exil und erzählt dessen kometenhaften Aufstieg zum Anführer einer kompromisslosen, nach ihm benannten Freiheitsbewegung, die eine anarchistische Ukraine verwirklichen wollte.

Across the globe, the number of protracted armed conflicts is rising, with many societies enduring the consequences of violence and conflict-related socio-economic disruption for decades. These enduring conflicts present complex and evolving challenges—legal, (geo)political, institutional, humanitarian, developmental, and environmental—that demand new approaches. In response, policy frameworks increasingly advocate for the so-called Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus (the 'Triple Nexus'), which seeks to bridge traditionally siloed agendas in favour of a more integrated response to protracted conflict. Yet, despite growing policy interest, the legal dimensions of protracted conflict and the implications of the Triple Nexus remain under-explored in international law. From Protracted Conflict to Sustainable Peace? offers the first comprehensive legal and interdisciplinary examination of how international law engages with the realities of protracted conflict. Drawing on a wide range of legal fields—including international humanitarian law, development law, economic law, refugee law, human rights law, criminal law, and peacebuilding law—contributors explore how legal regimes interact, overlap, and at times conflict in these complex settings. This book makes a simple but consequential claim: individuals who decisively influence a state's decision to use armed force should be held criminally responsible for aggressive war. Challenging the prevailing orthodoxy, it reinterprets the leadership clause in the definition of the crime of aggression and offers a new responsibility framework that reflects how decisions about war are actually made. Under this approach, liability is not confined to heads of state and top military leaders but extends to civilian power brokers, private actors, and third-state officials who are present at key moments of deliberation and, as reason-giving and reason-demanding participants, exercise decisive influence over whether a state goes to war or continues one. By clarifying who counts as a 'leader' and why, the book charts a principled middle path between overcriminalizing ordinary participants in war, such as common foot soldiers and private citizens, and exempting those who set unlawful wars in motion.
