Marine Technology, Ocean Development and the Law of the Sea

This open access book explores the political utility and consequences of memory laws with a focus on how militant memory laws frame, underpin and generate international conflicts. Proceeding from Russia's ongoing aggression against Ukraine, this examination plots how memory laws have preceded, partially led to, and encouraged the outbreak of the war itself via Russian propaganda. It also offers a broader perspective looking at developments in the Baltic States, Belarus, Finland, Germany, Hungary, and Poland, as well as in European (Council of Europe and European Union) law. Bringing together scholars with diverse perspectives, this book provides both analysis and conceptual reflection for scholars assessing the politics of memory laws. Exploring 500 years of protest and resistance in US history—and what the unsung heroes of social movements past can teach us about navigating our chaotic world In this timely new book in Beacon’s successful ReVisioning History series, professor Gloria Browne-Marshall delves into the history of protest movements and rebellion in the United States. Beginning with Indigenous peoples’ resistance to European colonization and continuing through to today’s climate change demonstrations, Browne-Marshall expands how to think about protest through sharing select historical moments and revealing the role of key players involved in those efforts. Drawing upon legal documents, archival material, government documents and secondary sources, A Protest History of the United States gives voice to those who pushed back against the mistreatment of others, themselves, and in some instances planet Earth. Browne-Marshall highlights stories of individuals from all walks of life, backgrounds, and time periods who helped bring strong attention to their causes. Those examples of protest include those of Wahunsenacock, more commonly known to history as Chief Powhatan, who took on English invaders in pre-colonial America in 1607; legendary boxer Muhammad Ali's refusal to fight in Vietnam and appealed all the way to the US Supreme Court; and David Buckel, LGBTQ+ rights lawyer and environmental activist who protested against fossil fuels by committing self-immolation in 2018. This book offers a comprehensive overview of international law in the light of contemporary challenges facing Central Asian States. The Central Asian States (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan) are increasingly gaining in significance as international players. During the Soviet period, they were only nominally sovereign States but since 1991, they became full-fledged members of the international community, and have, ever since, been constructing their respective schools of international law. Unresolved border disputes, regional migration, drug trafficking, human trafficking, disputes over water, the rise of terrorism are just a few challenges, which require Central Asian States¿ cooperation among themselves, and with other States. The competing interests of especially China, Russia, the United States, and the European Union in the region are adding to the complex mosaic of regional dynamics. This study shows the relevance and utility of international law in resolving those issues, in the interdisciplinary context of international relations, international institutions, and sociology of law. From a pedagogical perspective, the book identifies challenges to teaching international law in Central Asia, including curricular issues, independence of higher education institutions, language issues, influence of various foreign schools of international law doctrine, etc., and explores ways to integrate the Central Asian schools of international law in a broader Asian and international picture.
