Facing the Child investigates the technocratic expertise in the policing of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Mitali Thakor argues that CSAM has come to be framed as primarily a digital problem, to be resolved digitally, thereby unleashing a new form of corporatized policing helmed by global technology companies. Ambitious in scope, this multi-sited global ethnography draws on four years of original fieldwork and interviews with technology companies in the US, the United Nations in Bangkok, Thai and Dutch NGOs, and law enforcement in the US and the Netherlands. The book argues that in the 2010s, a network of technology companies, NGOs, and law enforcement created the notion of a “virtual child” in need of techno-solutionist saving to justify a vast expansion of surveillance technologies. The book examines how pervasive myths of child abuse online were exploited to serve the aims of seemingly disparate groups, from Christian neo-abolitionists to NGOs conducting virtual sting operations. It is this complex relationship between the care and securitization needed to fix the child victim as an object of data, concern, and rescue that the book explores.

This open access book explores the political utility and consequences of memory laws with a focus on how militant memory laws frame, underpin and generate international conflicts. Proceeding from Russia's ongoing aggression against Ukraine, this examination plots how memory laws have preceded, partially led to, and encouraged the outbreak of the war itself via Russian propaganda. It also offers a broader perspective looking at developments in the Baltic States, Belarus, Finland, Germany, Hungary, and Poland, as well as in European (Council of Europe and European Union) law. Bringing together scholars with diverse perspectives, this book provides both analysis and conceptual reflection for scholars assessing the politics of memory laws. This book is intended to open up the new Springer book series on Economic Security in European Law and Policy. It collects contributions that resulted from the first two conferences on economic security and market regulation organized by the editors. Like the conferences themselves, this volume offers an interdisciplinary analysis of different aspects around economic security policy in Europe. The authorship is diverse, ranging from academics to practitioners and also political representatives. By this, the volume offers wide ranging views. The contributions consist of academic articles as well as shorter essays, making the volume accessible not only to academics but also to a wider readership.

This book offers a comprehensive overview of international law in the light of contemporary challenges facing Central Asian States. The Central Asian States (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan) are increasingly gaining in significance as international players. During the Soviet period, they were only nominally sovereign States but since 1991, they became full-fledged members of the international community, and have, ever since, been constructing their respective schools of international law. Unresolved border disputes, regional migration, drug trafficking, human trafficking, disputes over water, the rise of terrorism are just a few challenges, which require Central Asian States¿ cooperation among themselves, and with other States. The competing interests of especially China, Russia, the United States, and the European Union in the region are adding to the complex mosaic of regional dynamics. This study shows the relevance and utility of international law in resolving those issues, in the interdisciplinary context of international relations, international institutions, and sociology of law. From a pedagogical perspective, the book identifies challenges to teaching international law in Central Asia, including curricular issues, independence of higher education institutions, language issues, influence of various foreign schools of international law doctrine, etc., and explores ways to integrate the Central Asian schools of international law in a broader Asian and international picture.

A Central Asian Perspective on International Law

This book argues that the pursuit of universal norms remains a worthwhile endeavour for the international legal discipline. It does this while also engaging with the very active imperialist critique of such norms. The study has 4 aims; firstly to illustrate the role that the idea and debate around norms have in developing international law, and secondly to address the philosophical concerns around identifying such norms. It moves on to explore whether a legal/practical instantiation of the universal can be done without taking a particular position/perspective. And finally, it turns to the impact the universal has on the development of international human rights law.
