Jane Austen's charming, witty and deeply relatable story of love and sisterhood, now an irresistible new feature film starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles"The more I know of the world, the more am I convinced that I shall never see a man whom I can really love. I require so much!"Marianne Dashwood wears her heart on her sleeve, and when she falls in love with the dashing but unsuitable John Willoughby she ignores her sister Elinor's warning that her impulsive behaviour leaves her open to gossip and innuendo. Meanwhile Elinor, always sensitive to social convention, is struggling to conceal her own romantic disappointment, even from those closest to her. Through their parallel experience of love - and its threatened loss - the sisters learn that sense must mix with sensibility if they are to find personal happiness in a society where status and money govern the rules of love.

Nebenstrafrecht

A gorgeously dark and magical tale of female revenge inspired by Celtic folklore and wild nature 'A masterpiece... an intricate, otherworldly, complex and dramatic novel that held me spellbound.' Barbara Erskine, Sunday Times Bestselling Author Three figures loom from the gathering dark of Britain's oldest story: a queen risen from slavery, a sorceress of the moon and an unwilling wife conjured from flowers. Their fates are bound together by the cruelty of a magician whose hunger scars the land. The Bloody Branch retells Goewin, Arianrhod and Blodeuwedd's story from the inside, revealing an epic not of male conquest but of women's transformation. They may suffer alone but they will fight back together. Brigid Lowe's dark and sensuous reimagining of the founding epic of Wales - The Mabinogion - casts ancient light on desire, sex and nature, as her heroines blossom into fierce new life. 'Rich with passion and relevance for our modern world... Stunning! Anya Bergman, author of The Witches of Vardo 'A rich, visceral fever dream' Lucy Holland, author of Sistersong 'I adored everything about The Bloody Branch... this haunting, sensual debut had me holding my breath, firmly under its spell.' “Prescient and captivating, hilarious and horrifying. A book that enchants and entices and enrages is a rare thing; Patrick Cottrell has once again solidified his prose as knowing, and generous, and vicious, and tender." - Bryan Washington, author of Palaver, National Book Award finalistA darkly funny and profoundly moving new novel by Whiting award-winning author Patrick Cottrell. And who did I think I was, trying to teach the troubled youth how to write?...I would say I was Dan Moran, a Korean adoptee, single, approaching forty, once plain-in-appearance as a woman, now ugly as a man, that’s who or what I thought I was. Most importantly, I was no longer useless, I was a writer.Five years after the death of his youngest brother, Dan Moran is now the published trans author of the autofictional novel Sorry to Disrupt the Peace. He is teaching fiction in Brooklyn and working on his next book–a psychological thriller–when a mysterious envelope arrives for him in the mail. Addressed to the wrong name, it includes a childhood photo of his deceased brother. But who would send such a thing, and why?Against his better judgment, Dan returns to his childhood home on the eve of his brother’s memorial dinner. His estranged family is surprised to see him, but he ignores them. He drives around in his brother’s Honda Accord, believing he is a detective. He searches for a constellation of unidentified women who may have been involved with his brother, all while being mistaken for another man. He hopes his investigation will reveal exactly who he was to his brother, but in a series of unsettling and destabilizing encounters, what he discovers is the irrevocable distance between who we are and how we are perceived.Afternoon Hours of a Hermit is Patrick Cottrell’s long-awaited second novel—an existential noir, an absurd comedy, a complex character study, and a heartbreaking inquiry into the paradox of identity, memory, and the very enterprise of writing fiction.

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • LONGLISTED FOR THE BOOKER PRIZE • NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW EDITORS’ CHOICE • NAMED ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS OF FALL BY: The New York Times, Associated Press, Goodreads, NPR, Harper’s Bazaar, Los Angeles Times, and more A mesmerizing portrait of an aging man’s last pilgrimage, from the award-winning author of The Girls and The Guest. “Piercing and suspenseful.”—The Wall Street Journal “Bold . . . arresting . . . stylistically adventurous.”—The Boston Globe “Profoundly moving.”—The Guardian A private plane cuts through the winter night, somewhere over Greenland. David, a retired executive, sits back in his leather seat, playing solitaire on his phone. Click. Click. Drag. Click. The notebook in his jacket pocket is filled with familiar phrases, urgent reminders to himself, but he struggles to recognize his own handwriting. A mystery, among many mysteries. The world, once so knowable, has been rendered inscrutable. This is what David knows: Cody, his assistant, asleep in the seat next to him, will shepherd him along the voyage. A stopover in London. Dinner with his adult daughter. A meeting in France with an old friend, estranged for decades. His final destination is Zurich. David glides through hotel rooms and airports and foreign cities, running out the clock on his mortal life. His grasp on the present slips away, and the past rushes in: the Sunday roasts of childhood. The stiff clothes meant only for church. A summer at a school friend’s house. The losses and missteps that punctuate a life. As David’s arrival in Zurich looms, an exquisitely rendered portrait of an unraveling mind emerges, both darkly humorous and profoundly moving. Hypnotic and startlingly original, Switzy probes the depths of human consciousness, revealing what a man is left with when the accomplishments and compromises that have defined him, and the illusions he's relied on, vanish.

Passages - Transitions - Intersections

This volume explores the complexities and variations of the nation and examines its transformative potential within the broad field of literary studies through various literary works, including fiction, autobiography, poetry, and theater. The authors address phenomena such as global capitalist exploitation, and its conjunction with other forms of violence, including colonialism, racism, sexism, xenophobia, and white supremacy. They engage with literary texts and film that reflect on, and disseminate, both hegemonic and, importantly, counterhegemonic discourses across the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. Each chapter engages with productions that speak from minoritarian and/or racially oppressed perspectives, including works representing Black American transnationalism, perspectives of refugees of color, immigrant and Palestinian voices, Romani positionalities, and Caribbean diasporic perspectives. Focusing on these cultural texts, our authors examine the effects of, as well as resistance to, a variety of vectors of oppression. These include U.S.-American anti-Black racism and anti-migrantism, in connection with the exploitation of the working class; European anti-Roma violence; 20th-century Zionism; the violence of European border regimes; and forced migration and the segregation of refugees into camps.

Exploring the Boundaries of Nationhood and its Alternatives

Narrated Belonging

The issue of sustainable development demands rigor in the concepts of choice, organization, and implementation. Faced with appalling injustice, in a society abandoned to ruin, like a garbage dump through which no sanitation project ever passes or re-passes, the writer must take up his pen and clearly depict the ills that are merely flung into words, in vain. This is what
the author does, embarking on this epistolary writing where, in a fiction close to reality, he communicates, as good citizens, the iconic Duala Manga Bell, several Cameroonian citizens, and the apologist for success who acts as intermediary. This work is not merely a story or a simple narrative; it is an imaginative work very close to reality, which transcends the limits of time, to connect fellow Cameroonians of one era with those of another.
