German Reich and Protectorate April 1943–1945

This sixteen-volume series on the persecution and murder of the European Jews by Nazi Germany presents an unrivalled range of contemporary documents recording events and themes from a variety of perspectives. The present volume, the last of three volumes dealing with the German Reich and the Protectorate, covers the period from spring 1943 to the end of the war. It chronicles the experiences of the small number of Jews still living in the German Reich and of the Jews taken there from April 1944 on Hitler's orders to work as forced labourers. The documents illustrate how the policy of persecution evolved as Germany's position in the war deteriorated, the extent to which the German population knew about the mass murder of Jews, and how the international community responded to the public revelation of the Nazis' crimes. In relation to the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, the volume details the anti-Jewish measures enacted by the German authorities and provides multiple insights into the situationin the 'model' Theresienstadt ghetto, where Jews were held prior to their deportation to Auschwitz.
