This book examines the long-term dynamics of urban labour market behaviour of women and men over three and a half decades, spanning the period from 1987-88 to 2023-24. It provides a detailed understanding of the topic by incorporating data and information that cover both the supply and demand sides of the labour market. The book distinguishes itself from similar studies by adopting a life-cycle approach for women so as to enable a holistic coverage of various dimensions that hamper or facilitate their economic participation at every stage of life. It examines the gender differences in labour market behaviour and outcomes of young graduate women, married working age women, as well as elderly women. It also undertakes a time-use analysis for understanding the impact of education on gender differences in the distribution of unpaid domestic responsibilities among adolescent girls and boys. Likewise, among the married women fully engaged in household work, the book explores the potential for their integration into the labour force if employment opportunities are accessible at their household. Combining quantitative analysis of secondary datasets with qualitative analysis of primary survey interviews, this study provides an evidence-based depiction of gendered labour market realities and the policy approach to address them. The qualitative approach uses narrative-building to capture the lived experiences of women and men employed in the public transport and sanitation sectors. This book will serve as an important resource for understanding of female labour market by researchers, scholars, policymakers, practitioners, NGOs, and students of gender and labour studies.

This collection explores the relationship between race, racism, and human rights law. It seeks to illuminate, in particular, how the European Court of Human Rights articulates the category of race, how human rights are experienced (differently) by racial minorities, and whether the European Convention on Human Rights has the tools to recognise and address racial harms. By centring race, it considers how Convention rights would look through the lens of race and ultimately interrogates if human rights law is part of the solution or part of the problem. Veronika Dolar is Associate Professor in the economics department at Pace University. She was born in Slovenia, which was within Yugoslavia. Dolar obtained her international baccalaureate in Italy at the United World College of the Adriatic and went on to graduate summa cum laude from Western University. She earned a PhD in applied economics from the University of Minnesota.&nbsp;
Teresa Perry is Assistant Professor in the economics department at California State University, San Bernardino. She graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, with an undergraduate degree in economics and later obtained a master’s degree in economics from Colorado State University. Perry earned a PhD in economics from Colorado State University.

Why do some international courts wield broad authority while others face pushback or fade into irrelevance? This book provides novel theoretical and empirical insights into this question. It offers a fresh, interdisciplinary perspective on the authority of international courts, drawing from law, political science and behavioural research. It develops, in Part I, a theoretical model and analytical framework for assessing these questions. The model explains how authority relationships between courts and their audiences - such as states, NGOs, individual applicants, and domestic courts - are formed, maintained, or contested. In Part II, the book applies this analytical framework to in-depth case studies of two selected international courts: the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States. These studies not only provide deeper insights into the authority of these courts but also demonstrate how the analytical framework can be applied to other international courts to generate an enhanced understanding of international court authority. The book sheds new light on why some courts enjoy enduring authority and others face pushback, offering powerful tools for understanding the behaviour of international courts and their audiences.

Gender Equality Behind Bars represents the first analysis of prison and immigration detention policies, broadly identified as penality policies, within the context of gender policy studies. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, it provides a roadmap for better understanding penality policy from feminist and gendered perspectives. An introductory chapter examines the paradoxical relationship between gender equality and life behind bars for women.&nbsp;This is followed by ten in-depth case-studies on gender and penality policies in a unique line-up of countries in the Global North&nbsp;(Denmark, Poland, Portugal, Canada, the UK and Spain) and the Global South (Zimbabwe, Uruguay and Peru). The comparative conclusion identifies cross-national and cross-sectoral trends and proposes a research agenda for a gendered approach to penality policies.
