Der österreichische Weltautor Stefan Zweig setzte sich in den 1920er Jahren intensiv mit der Figur und dem Werk Friedrich Hölderlins auseinander. Es entstanden vier Texte, die bisher kaum wissenschaftliche Beachtung fanden: der Artikel Hölderlin der romantische Mensch (1923), der Essay aus der Trilogie Der Kampf mit dem Dämon (1925), eine Rezension von Wilhelm Michels Friedrich Hölderlin (1926) und der bislang unveröffentlichte Vortrag Goethe und Hölderlin (1926) aus dem Nachlass. Diese Hölderlin-Schriften werden hier erstmals versammelt und im Kontext der ästhetischen und literaturhistorischen Reflexionen Zweigs verortet. Die begleitenden Aufsätze widmen sich Zweigs Hölderlin-Lektüren, der Präsenz des deutschen Dichters in seinem OEuvre sowie den Autografen in seinem Besitz. Die Annäherung an diese Begegnung aus unterschiedlichen, sich ergänzenden Blickwinkeln beleuchtet seine Darstellung Hölderlins als paradigmatisches Künstlerschicksal im Spannungsfeld von Genie, Krankheit und sozialer Isolation und bietet so neue Einsichten in die Bedeutung Hölderlins für Zweigs literarisches Selbstverständnis.

This volume offers the first comprehensive analysis of Yoko Tawada's German-language works and selected translations from Japanese, approached through the perspective of studies on difference. Drawing on interdisciplinary methodologies, including poststructuralism and posthumanism, it explores the dynamics of alterity - nomadic narratives, water, transformation, transgression and migration - as key motifs in Tawada's novels, essays, poetry, and plays. The dynamics of alterity permeate binary entanglements of the external and internal worlds, they do not reproduce the clash of thesis and antithesis or affirm negativity. They offer a way to step outside the limitations of dichotomous logic.

In the long twentieth century, negotiations of collective identities were characterised by an orientation towards the past rather than towards the future. For this phenomenon, Zygmunt Bauman has introduced the term »retrotopia«. Additionally, in the British context, retrotopian narratives often contained what has been termed »declinist« elements. Apart from temporal associations, the term »retrotopia« also points to the spatiality of cultural narratives. Covering a timespan from the late nineteenth to the early twenty-first century, the articles in this volume concentrate on retrotopian elements of Britishness as expressed in fiction, art and music. They further discuss the question of how these visions were emplaced. The volume is the result of a workshop conducted
during the summer term 2024 with students of the MA programme European Studies at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt. It contains articles written by scholars at different stages in their careers and from different disciplines such as literary studies, history, cultural studies and art history.

Separation of Powers

Durs Grünbein wurde seit dem Erscheinen seiner ersten Gedichtbände als der deutsche Wendepoet wahrgenommen. Nach der frühen Verleihung des Georg-Büchner-Preises 1995 wandte er sich in seiner lyrischen, von zahlreichen poetologischen Äußerungen begleiteten Produktion intensiv der Antike als Sujet zu - eine gut 25 Jahre dauernde Werkphase. Die vorliegende Studie versucht, durch ein &gt;close reading&lt; zentraler Gedichte, wichtige thematische Komplexe in diesem Schaffen Grünbeins zur Antike nachzuzeichnen. Sie interpretiert hierzu in vertikalen und horizontalen Schnitten durch Geschichte und Geografie seiner Texte zur römischen Kaiserzeit sowie über das Mittelmeer, Archäologisches, die Stadt Rom und andere Metropolen, um das offenzulegen, was Grünbein selbst mit dem Schlagwort der »Omnitemporalität« bezeichnet: ein gleichzeitiges Dasein von Motiven, Texten und Autoren, das die Schichtung der Zeiten durchbricht. Durch seine produktive Rezeption wälzt Grünbein, der in der Wertung der heutigen Strahlkraft der Antike selbst zwischen Resignation und Affirmation schwankt, kulturelle Ressourcen um, die immer noch zu einer Konstitution Europas dienen können, eines - wie die Arbeit zeigen möchte - offenen und inklusiven Europas, das sich mit Blick auf die Antike seiner selbst versichert.
