Digital Management of Waqf

Revival of Islamic Endowment

"Discover how digital innovation can revive Waqf, transforming timeless Islamic endowments into transparent, efficient, and sustainable engines of human flourishing."
Digital Management of Waqf: Revival of Islamic Endowment explores how digital transformation can revitalize one of Islam's most enduring institutions for social welfare, economic development, and human flourishing. For centuries, waqf has financed mosques, schools, hospitals, libraries, water systems, social services, and charitable activities across the Muslim world. Yet many contemporary waqf institutions face serious challenges, including inefficient administration, fragmented records, weak governance, inadequate transparency, underutilized assets, and limited public engagement.

This book examines how emerging digital technologies can address these challenges and reposition waqf as a dynamic institution for the twenty-first century. It discusses the application of digital databases, cloud-based management systems, artificial intelligence, blockchain, fintech, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), smart contracts, digital payment platforms, and data analytics in the administration, monitoring, development, and protection of waqf assets.

The book argues that digital transformation is not simply a technological upgrade. Rather, it represents a strategic opportunity to strengthen governance, transparency, accountability, efficiency, stakeholder participation, and public trust. Properly designed digital systems can help waqf institutions maintain accurate asset registers, monitor properties, improve financial reporting, prevent mismanagement, facilitate digital donations, connect donors with beneficiaries, and support evidence-based decision-making.

Particular attention is given to the emerging concept of Waqf 2.0-a modern, technology-enabled approach that preserves the spiritual and ethical foundations of waqf while adapting its management and financing mechanisms to the realities of the digital economy. The book explores innovative models such as cash waqf platforms, crowdfunding, blockchain-enabled waqf records, tokenization possibilities, AI-supported asset management, and integrated Islamic social finance ecosystems.

The book also addresses the ethical, legal, cybersecurity, institutional, and regulatory challenges associated with digital transformation. Technology alone cannot solve the structural problems of waqf management. Successful digitalization requires competent human resources, strong institutions, appropriate regulation, Shariah compliance, cybersecurity protection, and effective governance.

Combining Islamic intellectual foundations with contemporary management and technological perspectives, Digital Management of Waqf presents a forward-looking framework for policymakers, waqf administrators, Islamic finance professionals, researchers, students, technology specialists, and development practitioners. It ultimately demonstrates that the digital revival of waqf can contribute significantly to poverty reduction, education, healthcare, entrepreneurship, sustainable development, and inclusive human flourishing.

The central message of the book is clear: when the timeless institution of waqf is supported by responsible digital innovation, endowed wealth can become more transparent, productive, accessible, and impactful-creating benefits that endure across generations.
