American Crossroads

In The Southern Question, Jordan T. Camp considers the challenges of organizing against rising fascism. He turns to Antonio Gramsci's 1926 essay, "Some Aspects of the Southern Question" to do so. The essay compels organizers to overcome divisions and forge alliances across spaces of difference. Before it was ever published, Gramsci was arrested and confined to a fascist prison. A century later, Camp revisits his theory of alliance building across spaces of uneven capitalist development. He expands Gramsci's insights into different souths, including the Jim Crow American South, apartheid South Africa, and the neocolonial Caribbean. In each site, he centers radical theorists such as W.E.B. Du Bois, Angela Y. Davis, Ruth First, and Stuart Hall. Drawing on their political writings as well as extensive archival research, he "translates" the southern question into different spaces and contexts. In doing so, the book locates the roots of authoritarian and fascist political projects within the historical geography of racist and colonial capitalisms. Most significantly, Camp demonstrates the implications of translating anti-fascist theories into practice for the present conjuncture.

Critical Interventions

Pedagogy and the Struggle for Democracy brings together a selection of Henry Giroux's most incisive essays, analysing neoliberal fascism, public pedagogy, cultural politics, empire, and the politics of disposability, offering both a powerful critique of authoritarianism and a compelling vision of democratic resistance. One of the leading theorists of critical pedagogy and cultural politics, Giroux argues that authoritarianism is rooted not only in political institutions but also in culture, where power operates through education, media, language, historical memory, and the production of common sense to shape consciousness and identity. Developing the concept of neoliberal fascism, he demonstrates how market fundamentalism, authoritarian governance, and cultural power have fused into a new historical formation. Against this politics of domination, Giroux advances critical pedagogy as an essential moral and political practice for cultivating critical thought, collective agency, and the democratic capacities necessary to challenge authoritarianism and transform society.Essential reading for students and scholars of authoritarianism, fascism, neoliberalism, critical pedagogy, contemporary politics, education, cultural studies, political theory, and democracy, this book offers both an indispensable introduction to Giroux's thought and a timely resource for understanding, and resisting, the contemporary authoritarian turn.

Palgrave Studies in Race, Ethnicity, Indigeneity and Criminal Justice

The edited collection gathers contributions from across the world and engages in constructive debate about fundamental issues regarding Indigenous peoples in connection with issues of crime and harm. It provides the most diverse and global coverage of this topic across five continents. Existing explorations of Indigenous peoples in relation to issues of crime and harm have proven valuable in challenging, decentring, and renewing criminology. Yet, this research area remains at the margins of criminology, and many fundamental questions—such as the meaning of ‘being Indigenous’—await deeper exploration. Key themes explored by the book include: the meaning of Indigeneity; Indigenous epistemologies, Indigenous cosmologies, and their implications for the study of crime; the meaning of ‘crime’ for Indigenous peoples; causes, consequences, and types of crimes and harms against Indigenous Peoples; Indigenous peoples and gender; Indigenous systems of justice; and Interactions between Indigenous Peoples and state criminal justice systems. This collection does not seek consensus but reflects diversity and depth. It offers an introduction to Indigenous criminology and fundamental concepts, as well as a series of case studies and more intricate theorisation.David R. Goyes
is a researcher at the University of Oslo, Norway, with a PhD in criminology. He has contributed extensively to the study of North-South global relations, environmental conflicts, and Indigenous issues. Goyes is editor-in-chief of the
International Journal for Crime, Justice and Social Democracy
and a member of several editorial boards.
Angie Cuchimba
is a researcher at the Universidad Antonio Nariño, Colombia. Cuchimba holds a law degree from the same university. She is an Indigenous leader in the Nasa Community and has represented her People worldwide in diverse meetings. Together with Goyes, Cuchimba has published articles about Indigenous rights and justice in some of the best journals in the world.

, Chair in Inclusive Societies, University of Sheffield, UK
This book traces the hidden architecture of urban dispossession. From the ghost neighbourhoods of Kensington and Chelsea to the offshore-controlled student housing in Sheffield, it reveals how cities are being retooled not as homes for their residents, but as nodes in a global network of value extraction.Wealth chain urbanism is the name for this system: six interlocking mechanisms that convert communities into commodities. McKenzie introduces the concept of "Digital Plantation", showing how algorithmic systems and surveillance infrastructure reproduce the colonial logics of extraction in the twenty-first-century city. But this book also documents the counter-infrastructure being built by tenant unions, community land trusts, and environmental justice campaigners who refuse to be erased. It issues a radical challenge: reform is a trap. The book envisions a strategy of dual power—tactical fights for survival alongside the construction of autonomous alternatives beyond capital's reach. Essential reading for scholars, activists, policymakers, and anyone who wants to understand (and change) the future of our cities. Rex McKenzie
is a Senior Lecturer in Economics at Kingston University.

The Extractivist City

Drawing on over a decade and a half of first-hand experience, leading legal scholar and feminist activist Marilyn Kamuru documents the important role African feminist organizing plays in defining and defending gender-equality policy in Kenya and beyond. Focusing on how constitutionally mandated gender quotas in Kenya's parliament are repeatedly violated by government failures, or outright refusals, to implement them, Kamuru brings out how Kenya's feminist activists--during the drafting of the 2010 constitution and in the years since--fight gender inequality in ways that go more to the heart of the problem than any conventional approach. Kenyan feminists, Kamuru argues, are unique in that they address not only the underrepresentation of women in politics, but also the overrepresentation of men. This distinct framing of the issue, now enshrined in the highly progressive 2010 constitution thanks to their efforts, poses a real threat to male dominance in government, and this is what accounts for its obstinate non-implementation. Kamuru's findings highlight the important questions that African feminism poses to global efforts towards gender equality. How do quotas really impact gender equity? How are they used to limit debates about it? What does the dominance of typical WROs and INGOs in all areas of gender policy say about their own roles in inscribing such limits? And what alternatives are African feminist movements such as WeAre52pc and EndFemicide offering?

Chapultepec Girls weaves together threads of cultural, intellectual, and social history to examine how girls articulated a unique and previously unacknowledged vision of Mexican American culture and politics distinct from--and in some cases directly oppositional to--the political cultures of adult male-led Mexican organizations. Through a vivid microhistory of Club Feminino Chapultepec, a Houston-based organization, this book identifies Mexican American girls' radical politics in manifestos, speeches, and organized labor actions, as well as in the choreography of folk-dance expositions, the planning of enchilada dinner fundraisers and birthday party entertainment, and the contours of everyday working-class life. Chapultepec Girls reinterprets pochitas not as culturally delinquent or even passive victims but as a social and political vanguard, embedded within a sprawling, transnational web of activists, scholars, and political organizations that stretched from New York City to Mexico City and beyond.
