International Political Theory

This collection reviews Hegel in relation to the key themes of history, politics and philosophy. It shows how Hegel is a historical thinker, whose theories are
developed via a philosophical consideration of historical development at a number of levels. Hegel’s expertise in the history of philosophy leads him to
recognize the distinctiveness of the present, while building upon philosophical predecessors. This perspective sheds light on Hegel’s distinctive reading of the
political, which is both insightful and timely. Hegel’s reading of political economy emerges out of his conception of modernity and remains relevant to contemporary conceptions of civil society. Likewise Hegel’s focus upon the international remains of great moment in that he shows the interplay between internal and external forms of sovereignty. Hegel’s global perspective on international politics remains of relevance today and it bears upon his understanding of internal state sovereignty and history. This volume ends with a synoptic reading of Hegel today, which reviews him critically in the light of his problematic reading of race, sex and Eurocentrism. The essays in this volume reflect Gary Browning’s engagement with Hegel over a number of years, and, collectively, they show how Hegel’s political theory is linked to his reading of history and philosophy, and they make a case for the continued relevance of Hegel’s political and international theory.

Important constitutional provisions are examined in detail and their value in practice considered. In the second part of the book special emphasis is given to those parts of the system most likely to interest the general reader and the non-legal specialist in Soviet affairs. Criminal Procedure and Family Law are considered in detail, as are Trade Unions and the settlement of Labour Disputes. Special features of the Soviet legal system such as the legal position of the State Bank, collective farms and the state-controlled commercial and industrial enterprises are examined. The final chapter is devoted to the work of the Soviet legal profession.

The wealth of Tudor England was the object of much envy to less fortunate states in Europe. The main preoccupation of Tudor governments was to siphon a proper proportion of this wealth from the hands of its owners and creators into the hands of the state. Only with this transfer of resources, they believed, could the Tudor monarchy occupy its rightful place in the world. The consequence of this zealous pursuit of revenue is that Tudor statistics on wealth and property are copious and accurate. J. C. K. Cornwall used this hitherto underexploited resource to create a remarkably clear and comprehensive picture of early Tudor society in Wealth and Society in Early Sixteenth Century England (originally published in 1988). Through his pages can be sensed the efforts of the people to disguise their sources of income from the royal investigators, and the fiscal skill of the tax gatherers in finding out the truth, managing to extract both information and revenue from rich and poor alike.But what this evidence also shows is a pattern of breakdown in society. The rise in poverty, of those tramping the roads because they had lost everything, is a familiar complaint of Tudor governments. The author illustrates the effect of the forcible break-up of communities, as new industrial and agricultural practices were making rich men of those ruthlessly able to exploit their resources. His book is a fine and accurate portrait of a society in a somewhat brutal stage of transition, a picture all the more valuable because it quantifies precisely what up to now has been a more impressionistic and intuitive appraisal.

This book analyses processes of depoliticisation in modern Europe from the emergence of a distinct 'political' sphere in the late eighteenth century until the present day. Drawing on case studies from across the continent, it demonstrates that depoliticisation has played an integral part in the contestation of modern politics since its inception. Developing a novel conceptual framework, the authors argue that depoliticisation is much more than a simple negation of politics. Rather than an anonymous and amorphous process, depoliticisation often presents an express, actor-driven effort, with modes and forms no less varied than the more familiar manifestations of politicisation. Consequently, the chapters encompass a whole range of depoliticising discursive strategies, performative practices, and institutional rearrangements, playing out across different regime types, from revolutionary orders and representative governments with limited franchises to mass democracies and totalitarian dictatorships. Illustrating how historical actors understood 'the political' and in which ways they intervened to renegotiate its boundaries, this book seeks to enhance our understanding of modern politics and pose questions that still resonate today.
