Democracy and the Economy in Finland and Sweden since 1960

A Nordic Perspective on Neoliberalism

1. Introduction.- 2. Economic Democracy as a Contested Concept.- 3. Enterprise Democracy: Employee Power or Consultative Cooperation?.- 4. Collective Ownership as a Form of Economic Democracy.- 5. New Economic Paradigm Narrows the Horizon of Democratization.- 6. Final Struggles for Economic Democracy.- 7. From Democratization to Liberalization.- 8. Conclusion.

Christine Lagarde is a woman of firsts: first female head of the IMF, first female President of the ECB - and all without a classic career path through the world of finance. In her first autobiography, she recounts her rise, her successes and setbacks, and her fight against prejudice. It sheds light on the great crises of the global economy, her courageous decisions, and her distinctive perspective on power, emancipation, and change. Complemented by the voices of her most important companions, the result is a multifaceted portrait of a woman who breaks boundaries and consistently challenges the status quo.

Lady First

A major reassessment of the British government's communication of the goals of the Second World War and how its propaganda undermined the people's faith in the reliability of war news and the credibility of political leaders.

While waging war against enemies overseas, governments also need to win the hearts and minds of their own citizens. The media is critical to delivering the official message, raising public support for war, maintaining morale, spelling out what is to be achieved, downplaying setbacks, and presenting a bright vision of the postwar future. ln public memory, the British people were united in their support for the Second World War. Yet this popular image of the People's War neglects the fact that the war had to be sold.

In this work stretching from appeasement in 1938 through victory, award-winning historian Steven Casey examines how media, government, and armed forces worked to convince the British public to support the war, as well as the ways the British home front often questioned and challenged the official line. Using a vast array of primary sources, some of them previously untapped, he looks at the broad range of problems and policies that needed to be defended and explained, censored and concealed. The venues range widely from the battlefield to the football field, from the rubble-strewn cities of blitzed Britain to the faraway outposts of Empire. ln his chronological narrative of the war, Casey shines light on numerous high-profile episodes, including Munich and Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain and the Blitz, evacuation and rationing, and the campaigns in Africa, Asia, and Europe. Throughout, Casey stresses how the British military forged a relationship with reporters, how this relationship shaped news coverage of the fighting, and how this coverage in turn exerted a profound impact on every other dimension of the government's private and public actions. No one before has examined how all the branches of the armed services kept the home front informed about progress and especially setbacks. Officials, Casey argues, failed to communicate effectively with the British people, which undermined public trust and called the credibility of the political leadership into question. Remarkably, the BBC and Fleet Street sometimes relayed German communiqués to the public because the British government failed to release timely reports of its own.

The Sceptic Isle provides a bold reassessment of how the British government sold the Second World War to the British public. It powerfully showcases how the attempt to mould and manipulate coverage of battles created a major credibility gap that cast a long shadow over the British government's efforts to sell the different dimensions of the Second World War to the home front.

Argentine Freedom
is the first account of the most disruptive figure in Argentine history since the nation’s return to democracy. In just a few years, Javier Milei rose from television economist and social media provocateur to president of a country long defined by crisis, state intervention, and political polarization. His ascent has sparked fierce debate at home and abroad: Is Milei a threat to democracy, a neo-conservative, or the herald of a much larger revival of the classical liberal tradition?

The book provides a balanced examination of Milei’s rise to power. Rather than judging his policies, economic historian Sebastián Álvarez and political philosopher Ezequiel Spector ask a deeper set of questions: Where do Milei’s ideas come from? How do they relate to Argentina’s liberal tradition and its history of populism, socialism, and authoritarianism? And what does his presidency reveal about the tensions between liberty, equality, and democracy in the twenty-first century?

Blending economic history, political philosophy, and contemporary analysis,
Argentine Freedom
traces Argentina’s long ideological arc from the liberal foundations of the 1853 Constitution, through Peronism, military rule, neoliberal reform, and the interventionist turn after the 2001 collapse, to the two liberal “waves” that culminated in Milei’s election. Along the way, it unpacks the meanings of liberalism and libertarianism, contrasts them with their main rivals, and situates Milei within both national history and a broader global surge of anti-establishment leaders.

The resulting book offers a new way to understand Javier Milei as a political actor—and Argentina as a country once again at a crossroads.
Sebastián Álvarez
is Professor at Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez in Chile and Associate Researcher at the Graduate Institute in Geneva, Switzerland. His work explores the history of finance and banking in Latin America, with particular attention to how capital markets shape economic policy and international relations. He is the author of
Mexican Banks and Foreign Finance
(Palgrave Macmillan, 2019).
Ezequiel Spector
is Research Professor and Director of the Master of Arts program in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Adolfo Ibáñez University in Chile. He is the author of
Freedom as Social Cooperation
 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2026).

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR The Right has spent decades trying to win elections. The Left has spent decades deciding who controls everything else.In How the Regime Rules, New York Times bestselling author Christopher F. Rufo delivers his most explosive work yet, exposing the hidden architecture of American power and revealing a battle plan for the New Right to dismantle it.The Regime is not a conspiracy. It is something far more formidable—a sprawling network of Deep State bureaucrats, media gatekeepers, university administrators, corporate executives, and ideological enforcers who dictate what Americans can say, what they are permitted to believe, and who gets destroyed for stepping out of line. Its reach is ubiquitous, its accountability virtually nonexistent. And for decades, conservatives have mistaken capitulation for statesmanship. Rufo demolishes the comforting fiction that institutions can be neutral, that the marketplace of ideas is fair, or that the Right can simply retreat from the contest for influence. The system is not broken. It is functioning precisely as its architects intended.Rufo knows how to expose the machinery and dismantle it. He transformed DEI from an untouchable orthodoxy into a political liability. He propelled allegations of Somali welfare fraud into the national spotlight. He identified structural vulnerabilities, punctured manufactured consensus, and demonstrated how seemingly impregnable bastions of authority can be forced onto the defensive. Now he reveals the playbook. From Samuel Adams and the Sons of Liberty to dismantling ideological strongholds in higher education, Rufo uncovers the mechanics of political domination. How narratives harden into unquestionable truths, how elites perpetuate their own authority, and how disciplined insurgents can upend an entire political order.Rufo agrees with the Left on one fundamental point: Every institution is an instrument of a particular vision of society. In How the Regime Rules, he argues that conservatives must stop mistaking political restraint for moral superiority, cultivate a formidable counter-elite, and master the levers of influence that shape American life. The Regime has perfected the art of ruling without appearing to rule. Now Rufo turns its own methods against it, showing the Right how to reclaim America's commanding heights and chart a new course for the country.

In How the Regime Rules, New York Times bestselling author Christopher Rufo delivers a bold, unflinching examination of how America’s founding spirit was transformed—and, in his telling, betrayed—by the rise of modern bureaucratic power. In How the Regime Rules, Christopher F. Rufo—the New York Times bestselling author who nuked Critical Race Theory, gutted DEI in corporate boardrooms, put Somali fraud on the map, and toppled the president of Harvard—delivers his most explosive work yet: a manifesto for the evolving right and a scorched-earth blueprint to shatter the invisible power structure that now governs America. We all know the Regime. It’s the interlocking web of the Deep State bureaucracy, biased media, corrupted academia, and corporate middle managers that enforces conformity, doles out status to favorites, and crushes dissent. Instead of ruling by winning elections, the Regime rules through cultural capture—dictating what you are allowed to say, think, and believe. Rufo strips back the curtain on their operation, turning the Left’s own playbook against them to show how a radical minority seized the commanding heights of American life. He tracks the bureaucratic rot that traded our founding spirit for a system of managed decline, from the administrative state’s silent coup to the ideological hijacking of our elite institutions. But the time for grievance-filled exposés is past. Now is the time to build real, lasting political power. The old GOP establishment failed because it spent decades begging for a seat at the Regime’s table—only to be mocked, then discarded. The "New Right" too often gets distracted by petty revenge and backward-looking saltiness. Rufo rejects both. Instead, he offers a high-energy, forward-looking vision: building a counter-elite that is rooted in real community, culturally dominant, relentlessly entrepreneurial, and unapologetically patriotic—just like the Founding Fathers. Patriots are already building independent businesses, parallel media ecosystems, homeschool networks, and tech startups that operate entirely outside the Regime’s thumb. Rufo provides a practical counterrevolution roadmap—dismantling the power of bloated bureaucracies, purging left-wing racialism from federal agencies, restoring merit in our universities, and shifting the fight from pure culture wars to the economic realities of the working man. Build it well—make it vibrant, profitable, and bold—and the American people will follow in droves. How the Regime Rules moves us past easy wins or empty nostalgia. It equips us with the strategy, tactics, and spirit required for total national reconstruction. Drawing on his hard-won victories and a cold-blooded analysis of how power actually works, Rufo shows how a new generation can seize the initiative, recapture the American spirit, and restore self-government.

'Few historians write with Serhii Plokhy's authority, clarity or global vision... Essential reading, and a marvellous book' Peter FrankopanFrom the bestselling author of Chernobyl comes a sweeping history of the geopolitics behind the nuclear arms race, from the first atomic bomb to today On 16 July 1945, the Nuclear Age began with the explosion of the first atomic bomb and the words of J. Robert Oppenheimer: 'Now I am become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds.' While the threat of mutually assured destruction kept a lid on a simmering and tense geopolitical landscape, events like the Chernobyl disaster and near-misses like the Cuban Missile Crisis showed that total destruction was only ever one malfunction, mistake, or miscommunication away. Now, as governments re-arm their nuclear arsenals, treaties designed to limit the acquisition and use of nuclear weapons fall away, and nuclear weapons come increasingly within reach of non-state actors, we are on the brink of a renaissance of the nuclear industry. In The Nuclear Age, acclaimed historian Serhii Plokhy paints an intricate picture of a world governed by fear. From the first artificial splitting of the atom in 1917 and the race to create the first atomic bomb in World War II, through the fraught arms race of the Cold War, to the imperialism, neo-colonial motivation and wars being waged today, the threat posed by nuclear weapons is as pertinent as ever.As he examines the motivations of key players, Plokhy confronts the crucial question of our age: what can we learn from the first nuclear arms race that can help us to stop the new one?

Revealing the people behind the Rothschild name, The Rothschilds explores the lives and legacy of one of the best-known and most impactful families in modern history. The Rothschild name has long been synonymous with wealth and privilege, but as Jews the family has also been dogged by prejudice and hatred. Antisemitism followed them from their earliest beginnings in the oppressive Jewish ghetto of Frankfurt, where Jews were not allowed out after nightfall, to the lofty summits of high finance, art, and culture. However, behind the myths, the glamor, and the conspiracy theories are a group of relatives whose individualism, personalities and occasional eccentricities have been obscured by their shared surname.

In The Rothschilds, Harry Freedman delves into their lives on a historical tour, marked by an unfailing attention to the influence of individual family members on world events.

We travel from the genesis of the Rothschild international banking empire to the impact of individual Rothschilds in multiple fields over the past 250 years.

Spanning war, politics and the industrial revolution, art, architecture and interior design, zoology, smuggling, and counter-terrorism and the ongoing struggle against entrenched anti-Jewish bigotry in different historical eras and places.

The Rothschilds reveals a truly new story of a very old family, making a great contribution both to history and our understanding of a dynasty that has shaped our world.

Fundamental Rights for Non-Humans

This open access book argues that the scarcity created by the under-production of vaccines during the Covid-19 years was an entirely predictable, even legitimate consequence of how the international patent system works. Far from being a technical sub-discipline of intellectual property law that simply protects inventions, the international patent system is prismatic of the ways in which we fail to adapt to the challenges of our times: patent rights are intended to incentivise innovation for societal benefit, but in fact facilitate predictable injustice. The patent system ignores the care-constituted nature of our lives, prioritising limiting notions of fairness at the cost of structural harms. The Social Life of Intellectual Property proposes an ethic of just care to temper justice in the global governance of technology. It explores intellectual property as recurring social processes and explains why individual agency and shared responsibility are implicated. On an ecologically imperilled planet, and in a time between pandemics, we must reckon with what we are socialised to believe is legally possible.

Principles of Private and Public Planning (1951) looks at a key economic question: plan or no plan? By examining the economic theories of both planned and unplanned economies together with human and societal impulses, it aims to provide both an analysis and overview of the topic.

An intellectual biography of Eric Hobsbawm, one of the most influential thinkers of the twentieth century. Eric Hobsbawm (1917-2012) was one of the foremost European intellectuals of the twentieth century. He published hundreds of articles on modern history and culture, and his books became canonical works and bestsellers on both sides of the Atlantic. His crystal-clear writing, vast erudition, and ability to make his Marxist analysis digestible to a wide audience brought him worldwide renown. Yet Hobsbawm was no academic hermit. Through his globetrotting journalism, he was embedded in an extraordinary web of politicians, activists, and fellow intellectuals across Europe, South Asia, and the Americas, including Manmohan Singh, Che Guevara, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Fernand Braudel, E. P. Thompson, Arno Mayer, and Salvador Allende. Emile Chabal traces the origins of Hobsbawm's ideas and most famous writings by exploring his scholarly foundations, delving deep into the archives to uncover hidden links and unexpected conversations that shaped his pathbreaking work. Going well beyond the Ages series of modern history books for which Hobsbawm is best known, Chabal offers the first substantial interpretation of Hobsbawm's entire body of writing. Indeed, The Age of Hobsbawm is also a trove of unique insights into the generations of Marxist writers with whom Hobsbawm was in conversation-authors whose work continues to shape political debates globally.

Close, close beneath the land I had once rooted myself in and loved, lay a land filled with violence, injustice and hatred On 22 April 1962 what remains of Göran Rosenberg's family embark from his native Sweden to make Israel their new home. Transplanted into a nation born only a few months before him, he is first enchanted by its vitality, imprinted by its ideals. It marks the beginning of a lifetime's journey across the promised land and into its past, a reckoning with the utopian visions and desperate fears that went into Zionism as well as the violence and dispossession of its realization. This landmark book tells the story of that journey - through buried stories and erased villages, dreams and disillusionments, and the histories still unfurling today.
