The Secret Keeper of Main Street

Thomas T: Das unglaubliche Talent der
Bailey Dowery

Das unglaubliche Talent der Bailey Dowery

Roman | Fesselnder Roman über Frauenfreundschaften, Rassismus und Feminismus im Amerika der 50er Jahre

Markets and Governments in Economic History

How the market that made the American Dream was made--and what that history tells us about its future and fluctuations. When Americans poured into cities and suburbs during the twentieth century, they needed capital to build and own homes. The market that emerged did more than merely provide it: the American mortgage market became the consequential, if occasionally misunderstood, cornerstone of the US financial system. House Money traces the history of the growth and occasional collapse of the American mortgage market over the last 150 years. Jonathan Rose and Kenneth Snowden show how three major housing-related crises (of the 1930s, 1980s, and 2000s) were not just cyclical events nor bubbles. Rather, they were episodes in a common pattern: shocks produced when the availability of capital in the market was eclipsed by the risk the market took on. Rose and Snowden chart the macro factors that produced these capital/risk asymmetries, showing that in all three crises, the macroeconomic trends--not just bubbles, not banker avarice--conspired to create a downturn despite federal and private safeguards. This illustrates Rose and Snowden's core principle: housing markets can (and often, must) shoulder considerable risk. When the capital behind that risk evaporates, trouble becomes more likely. Mining more than a century of economic history, Rose and Snowden show how the institutions and practices in the American mortgage market reflect the push-pulls of its past--both the private innovations and the government interventions. House Money reveals the great risk undertaken in service to American homeownership--and the perennial question of what happens when that risk goes wrong.

Scam World

Grundrechte-Report 2027

For decades, the US assumed ideas would naturally flow from research into commercialization. That assumption no longer holds. As Anne Marie Knott shows, the US innovation system is no longer fit for purpose in an age of great-power rivalry. Since 1980, American R&D productivity has fallen dramatically, while China has become far better at turning R&D into growth. Why? Because the two countries operate from fundamentally different models of innovation. The United States follows a 'river' logic: produce frontier science and trust the market to carry discoveries downstream. China follows a 'lake' logic: absorb, develop, diffuse, and capture value. Drawing on new empirical research and a widely applicable measure of R&D productivity, Knott challenges seven myths shaping US innovation policy and offers a reform agenda built less on new spending than on using existing tools far more effectively. The result is a provocative account of innovation, growth, and national power.

Anthem Series on Development in Africa and the Diaspora

Narrates the story of Cape Town's Africa Café and introduces the Sustainable Entrepreneurship Framework for Africa (SEFA), explaining how excluded entrepreneurs build and convert social, cultural, human, and political capital into financial capital across Africa and its diaspora.
In 1992, in a small house in Cape Town's Observatory neighborhood, Portia Mbau began serving dishes gathered from her travels across the continent. What began as a family venture grew, with her brother Hector's marketing and brand vision, into the Africa Café, a celebrated cultural enterprise at Heritage Square that seated the world at a communal table for nearly three decades before closing in the collapse of global travel in 2020. This book is the first full-length scholarly study of that enterprise: what one family built, what it meant, and what it teaches.
The book is built on primary interviews with Hector Mbau and sustained fieldwork in Cape Town, including the township of Langa. From this single richly documented case, it develops an original theoretical contribution, the Sustainable Entrepreneurship Framework for Africa (SEFA). SEFA integrates the five forms of capital (social, human, cultural, financial, and political) with the constraints of post-colonial economies and the linked processes of value creation and value capture. Its central mechanism, capital conversion under constraint, explains how entrepreneurs excluded from formal finance build the forms of capital available to them and convert them, through the value they create, into the financial capital the system withheld. The framework is stated in testable propositions, with explicit boundary conditions. The argument then travels. Comparative chapters set the Africa Café alongside township enterprise, continental African entrepreneurship, and the historic Black business districts of the United States, from Greenwood in Tulsa to Parrish Street in Durham, Jackson Ward in Richmond, Sweet Auburn in Atlanta, and Farish Street in Jackson, districts that built every form of capital except the political capital that might have protected them. A full chapter grounds the framework in the philosophy of Ubuntu, engaging both its promise and its critics. The book speaks to scholars and students of entrepreneurship, management, African studies, and development; to policymakers concerned with enterprise and empowerment; and to general readers drawn to the story of what one family built, what it meant, and what it teaches.

Interventions: Rethinking the Nineteenth Century

Speculative endeavors describes the connections between speculation and minoritarian subjects and practices during the rise of capitalism in the US. Drawing on diverse historical perspectives, the volume challenges conventional historiographic narratives by spotlighting historic agents traditionally excluded from discussions of knowledge and capitalism. Through a series of meticulously researched essays on pedagogical practices, domestic manners, public court cases, and behind-the-scenes publishing habits, the book delves into the quotidian forms of knowledge on the fringes of nineteenth-century society. Each original contribution sheds light on how seemingly inconsequential narratives are part of the fabric of the period's burgeoning market economy and financial capitalism. Speculative endeavors is a call to reconceptualize our understanding of the past. Through its rigorous analyses of epistemic and economic practices and compelling narratives of marginalized agents, this groundbreaking collection invites readers to reconsider the intersections of power, privilege, and precarity in the turbulent times between the early republic and the Gilded Age.

Where to Retire

Hanau, 19.

Ethnic and Indigenous Business Studies

How could
Homo sapiens
survive for so long when all other
Homo
went extinct? This multidisciplinary book provides a detailed synthesis of published knowledge by archaeologists and other scientists on the production, trade and daily activities of ancient peoples. It locates populations within the changing environment of the planet (glaciations and deglaciations, wet and dry climates, physical, economic, and social periods over the long spans of the Pleistocene and Holocene). Research for this work was sourced from various fields, including archaeology, anthropology, ethnology, geology, zoology, and paleontology. Emerging disciplines such as genomics, paleobiology, paleomedicine and zoopharmacognosy contribute new insights into the living conditions and challenges that confronted our ancestors.
The first part of the book focuses mainly on Indigenous Peoples of the Americas, particularly North America (Canada, United States, and Mexico), although some sources and examples are drawn from other regions of the world. Through case studies based on scholarly records, ancient networks covering distances of thousands of kilometers in Africa, North America and Eurasia are described. The second part addresses ancient modes of survival, communication, storytelling, and migration of Indigenous populations in their traditional natural environments, from the Paleolithic and Neolithic eras to the present. Diet, horticulture, and modes of land, river, and sea transport are detailed, in the context of migration routes from Africa to Eurasia and in the Pacific and the Americas. The third part deals with the past seven and the next seven generations. It provides a description of recent and present-day Indigenous peoples and communities and their interactions with governments and industries. Case studies illustrate issues about the legitimacy of foreign or domestic companies operating on Indigenous territories, both in North America and some other continents. The traditional mindset of certain Indigenous populations in North America is described. The book concludes with an examination of how business legitimacy may be established and the types of engagement approaches recommended by Indigenous communities’ leaders.
