Caruso St John: Collected Works: Volume
3 2010-2020

Collected Works: Volume 3 2010-2020

'Utterly gripping, enraging, entertaining - and important. I can't recommend it highly enough' Jennifer HiggieIn 1958, talented and fearless and eighteen years old, Liliane Lijn left her family home and moved to Paris alone to become an artist. Once there, she found an art world filled with the wild energy of creative revolution - peopled and controlled almost entirely by men.Embracing the bohemian spirit of the Left Bank, Lijn built a life for herself in the city, befriending artists, poets and revolutionaries and creating ground-breaking sculptures with light, text and movement, despite being told again and again that there are no great women artists.Liquid Reflections is her sparkling memoir of these years of experiment and adventure. Based on personal diaries from the time, this is a riveting and revelatory portrait of the artist as a young woman.'A whirlwind of encounters . . . a pioneer in melding art, poetry and science' Art Basel

Liquid Reflections

Architects, historians, and theorists have had a weird obsession with fascist architecture since postmodernism. Why? And who are the antifascist architects? What does antifascist architecture look like? Antifascist Architecture is the first attempt at creating a working definition of antifascist architecture after academia has spent decades fetishizing fascist architecture.
Brilliant scholarship has of course been presented about anti-colonial architecture, liberation architecture, and so forth. Yet antifascist architecture is an avenue that remains to be explored. This book does just that, offering a kaleidoscopic, peripatetic bricolage of architects who heroically aligned themselves with antifascist struggles, buildings made in the name of antifascism, and a call to arms for antifascist utopian futures. It is written for students and practitioners of architecture, but also activists and scholars in the social sciences who are interested in antifascist history, theory, and practice.

Antifascist Architecture

El Lissitzky (1890-1941), one of the most eminent figures of Soviet avant-garde art, had been in contact with the Swiss art scene and its like-minded protagonists since 1919. In 1924-25, he spent several months at a sanatorium in the Swiss canton of Ticino to treat his pulmonary tuberculosis. Despite the illness, he created key works in his oeuvre during this time, spanning the fields of architecture, graphic design and typography, and fine art. Together with Jean Arp, he wrote the book
Die Kunstismen
("The Artisms"), which was published by a Swiss publishing house in 1925 and became a milestone in the evolution of New Typography and graphic art in Switzerland. He also contributed to the Swiss architecture magazine
ABC, Beiträge zum Bauen.
A century later, this book takes a fresh look at El Lissitzky from the perspective of his host country at the time, arranged in thematic chapters about architecture, typography, and graphic design, Lissitzky as an artist and theorist, and his relationship to Switzerland. The illustrations bring together for the first time all the important works by the great avant-gardist in the collections of Swiss museums, including parts of a previously unpublished portfolio held at the Musee d'art et d'histoire in Geneva.

Junior Architects
traces the pursuit of equity in architecture and design education through historical analysis, critical theory, and comparative case studies from across contemporary US contexts. At a moment when architecture schools are grappling with urgent calls for racial and economic justice amid growing political backlash, this incisive volume asks how early-learning interventions can expand access to the profession and influence the ways it is taught, valued, and practiced. It situates the current crisis in design education within a long arc of exclusion in American higher education, showing how elite institutions, accreditation systems, and resource-intensive pedagogies have reinforced narrow authorship of the built environment.
Organized into three parts-Institutions, Instruction, and Practice-and anchored by case studies, the collection moves from examining how universities, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and alternative programs are redefining recruitment and retention, to investigating pedagogical strategies that shift from gatekeeping to genuine civic empowerment, and finally to exploring how professional pathways might be restructured to prioritize pluralism, reciprocity, and public purpose.
Far from a triumphalist account, this is a field report from contested terrain, offering perspectives from both within and alongside institutions.
Junior Architects
invites us to envision a discipline that does not simply diversify its margins, but rethinks its foundations, transforming architecture from a rarefied profession into a shared language for civic life.

New Paradigms in Design Education

Junior Architects

School buildings are among the most complex design, planning, and construction tasks for architects. They reflect educational concepts as well as cultural and spatial ideas of their time.New Schools on the Block
offers a survey of a decade of school building design by Berlin- and Lausanne-based AFF Architekten, a collective of architects, researchers, and crafts people. AFF's understanding of schools is that they are spaces of identification as much as they are places of learning. They aim to create buildings which open up spaces for experiences that foster identity through the interplay of shape and use.
New Schools on the Block
is a typological inventory. It features 40 of AFF's school designs, built and unrealized, for towns and cities in Germany and Switzerland through floor plans and photographs of their surroundings, entrance halls, stairwells, classrooms, recreational and storage spaces. While floor plans invite the imagination of spaces, images of realized buildings demonstrate that even details such as a handrail or a sanitary room can be instructive. A comic strip about everyday school life adds an extra touch of realism.
Essays on historic and contemporary school building design and a conversation with AFF Architekten provide background information.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day - The Art Of The Movie

A handsome new volume devoted to the most important works by Manet, a pivotal figure in Impressionism and widely considered the first of the modern artists. With over 100 seminal paintings, this book celebrates the artist who bridged the transition from Realism to Impressionism and is seen as giving rise to Modernism. Combining painterly technique with strikingly modern images of contemporary life, much of Manet’s work documented daily life in Paris, depicting scenes ranging from the recently built boulevards with their sidewalk cafes, industrial marvels such as the railways, and pleasure grounds ranging from newly landscaped parks to horse racing. He also painted provocative scenes of the demimonde in popular bars and cabarets. Included here are popular and iconic works such as Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe, with its shocking juxtaposition of a nude woman amid fully dressed men, and Olympia, Manet’s modern reworking of Titian’s Venus of Urbino that Parisian society initially rejected as scandalous. Little has been published on Manet recently, so this comprehensive survey is long overdue. His bold style, muscular brushwork, frank subject matter, and compositions that pushed boundaries and confronted societal norms continue to influence and inspire today’s young artists.

COURAGE: Transformation of Mobility Spaces. Process, Actors and Design explores ways and measures to promote walking and cycling, improve the quality of the urban environment, and introduce greenery into public spaces. As a practical aid for actual implementation projects, it presents not only spatial analyses of the transformation processes, but also visualizations of data on decision-making processes and the involvement of all stakeholders-from policymakers to citizens. A series of essays contextualizes and reflects on current transformation projects.

The essays collected in this volume cover the spectrum of issues that determine the quality of architecture. For example: What exactly is architectural quality? Is it based on physical facts? Is it a matter of cultural context? Does it lie in the eye of the beholder or is it actually beauty that matters? Do architects' intentions and ideas provide the keys to a building's evaluation? Does it rest primarily in its form? Or in the ethical attitude it expresses? Or is it just a group of critics deciding these issues among themselves? While quantitative-technical evaluations of buildings abound internationally, the qualitative assessment of architectural works has so far been largely neglected. This unique anthology on definitions of architectural quality ranges from general observations and theories to case studies, and lays a rigorous foundation for assessing works of architecture.

Defining Architectural Quality

Chromed Columns Abu Dhabi
is an artist's book in which sculptor Sandra Peters focuses on an architectural detail in the urban environment in which she lives and works. These are chrome-mirrored columns that are ubiquitous in downtown Abu Dhabi, but also characterize the urban landscapes of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) beyond. In everyday perception, the chrome-mirrored columns on the facades of buildings remain inconspicuous, even virtually invisible; only when isolated thematically do they come into consideration as significant elements of the urban environment, which they absorb like convex mirrors.

The photographic documentation of her urban environment is an integral part of Peters' artistic practice. She often develops sculptural works from her observations. In
Chromed Columns Abu Dhabi
, she reverses this relationship: the columns in the urban space of Abu Dhabi are architectural details, but Sandra Peters isolates them photographically and thematically as elements that have sculptural potential. She has selected 51 photographs for her publication. These are presented as a series of full-page illustrations. Further contexts for viewing the photographs are provided by an introductory text by the artist and an essay by architect and urbanism researcher George Katodrytis.

Over a decade in the making, Sugimoto's masterpiece observatory building at his art foundation in Odawara, Japan, is the culmination of his architectural practiceApart from photography, Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto has been working in sculpture, performing arts and architecture for more than 20 years. Since the early 2010s, he has been constructing the Enoura Observatory, and with his singular vision he has brought together ancient and contemporary Japanese traditions in one art and architectural complex. This book provides an account of this stunning multidisciplinary project. The Observatory, part of the artist's Odawara Art Foundation, is sited on a hilly area covered with citrus trees in Odawara, nestled against the outer rim of the Hakone Mountains and overlooking Sagami Bay. Odawara is home to groups of artisans with mastery of sophisticated techniques that have been handed down for centuries. Sugimoto has constructed the Enoura Observatory using these techniques, which are growing increasingly difficult to preserve. He envisions it as a forum for disseminating art and culture both within Japan and to the rest of the world. The stunning photographs in Enoura Observatory: Land of Distant Memories reveal Sugimoto's poetic vision for this total work of art that is the culmination of his art practice. Hiroshi Sugimoto was born in Tokyo in 1948. A photographer since the 1970s, his work deals with history and temporal existence by investigating themes of time, empiricism and metaphysics. Sugimoto has received numerous grants and fellowships, and his work is held in the collections of Tate Gallery, London, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among many others. Sugimoto lives between Tokyo and New York City.
