Collected Works: Volume 3 2010-2020

CICA / International Conference on Architectural Criticism

The essays collected in this volume cover the spectrum of issues that determine the quality of architecture. For example: What exactly is architectural quality? Is it based on physical facts? Is it a matter of cultural context? Does it lie in the eye of the beholder or is it actually beauty that matters? Do architects' intentions and ideas provide the keys to a building's evaluation? Does it rest primarily in its form? Or in the ethical attitude it expresses? Or is it just a group of critics deciding these issues among themselves? While quantitative-technical evaluations of buildings abound internationally, the qualitative assessment of architectural works has so far been largely neglected. This unique anthology on definitions of architectural quality ranges from general observations and theories to case studies, and lays a rigorous foundation for assessing works of architecture.

What is high-quality architecture, and what exactly defines architectural quality? The contributions to the 2022 International Conference on Architectural Criticism lay a rigorous foundation for assessing works of architecture.

Defining Architectural Quality

Monsters and Mutants
presents a provocation for a new approach to reverse the consequences of the Anthropocene, by learning from plant intelligence. New York-based design firm Archi-Tectonics' recent research on climate change opened up a field unknown to architecture so far. By emulating organic intelligence, Winka Dubbeldam and her team created a series of new architectural taxonomies: Hybrids and Earth Buildings, part nature, part architecture. Appropriating organic intelligence, these structures are at once resilient, resource-efficient, and beneficial for humans and non-humans, capable of healing our ecosystem.
Monsters and Mutants
showcases how these revolutionary concepts were implemented for the first time in the masterplan for the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, that Archi-Tectonics designed in collaboration with !melk Landscape Architecture & Urban Design and Thornton Tomasetti structural & environmental engineers. Lavishly illustrated and with contributions from esteemed architects and theorists such as Carlo Ratti, Thom Mayne, Mette Ramsgaard Thomsen and Justin Korhammer, the book explores the future of urban and architectural design in making cities more resilient and sustainable. It provides a critical look at how multi-disciplinary collaboration and innovative thinking can address some of the most pressing environmental issues of our time, turning potential ecological crises into opportunities for regeneration and transformation.

The first comprehensive monograph focusing on the built work of BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group, one of the most innovative and creative architecture practices working todayFor over two decades, the pioneering, multidisciplinary Danish firm BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group has created a wide range of projects that give form to the future, standing out for their bold-yet-practical forms, elements of surprise, and people-focused solutions. BIG Atlas offers an ambitious and all-encompassing survey of more than fifty completed projects from around the world, from an energy plant topped with a ski slope and a LEGO Museum that seems to be made out of the famous bricks to the firm's own recently completed Copenhagen headquarters.Spanning a rich variety of typologies, scales, and materials, the featured projects are brought to life through more than 600 photographs, plans, and drawings. Presented together for the first time, they trace BIG's transformation into fully integrated design, synthesizing the fields of architecture, interiors, landscape, engineering, planning, and product design to advance more sustainable ways of living within our environments while simultaneously raising the quality of our lives.Beautifully designed, oversized, and spanning more than 500 pages, this definitive monograph captures the groundbreaking work of a visionary firm.

Bernerd’s interior design is highly regarded for her bold and contemporary approach to luxury, and in this second Rizzoli volume of her work, she draws on travel as her principal inspiration in designing one-of-a-kind spaces that exude sophistication and coziness in equal measure. Bernerd is known for creating interiors that have a very special sense of place. Firm in her belief that “good design transports us without us being entirely conscious of the fact,” she aspires to take us out of the day-to-day to places we don’t want to leave and give us the desire to bring a piece of that back home. Committed to the utility of good design, Bernerd works on an increasingly global platform with projects around the world. Hailed by the Financial Times for combining “impeccable craftmanship and timeless style,” her keen eye for composition and detailing and remarkable flair for color and texture make her one of the most sought-after interior designers in the world. Renowned for her insight on the allure of the exotic, the designer invites the reader to apply lessons from their own wanderings. She utilizes her sophisticated eye for detail, carefully selecting books, candles, glassware, and trays in order to enhance every element of design. Beautifully illustrated with stunning images of Bernerd’s latest projects, a lifetime of learning and collaborating is employed to great effect in the sun-dappled rooms of a summer home in Ibiza, and in a resort in the Riviera Maya that combines vernacular architecture with modern amenity in an elegant and thoughtful way. This luxurious volume celebrates the breadth of Bernerd’s ambition “to create meaningful, timeless, and seductive spaces that will linger in someone’s mind and heart.”

Tara Bernerd: A Design Journey

'Utterly gripping, enraging, entertaining - and important. I can't recommend it highly enough' Jennifer HiggieIn 1958, talented and fearless and eighteen years old, Liliane Lijn left her family home and moved to Paris alone to become an artist. Once there, she found an art world filled with the wild energy of creative revolution - peopled and controlled almost entirely by men.Embracing the bohemian spirit of the Left Bank, Lijn built a life for herself in the city, befriending artists, poets and revolutionaries and creating ground-breaking sculptures with light, text and movement, despite being told again and again that there are no great women artists.Liquid Reflections is her sparkling memoir of these years of experiment and adventure. Based on personal diaries from the time, this is a riveting and revelatory portrait of the artist as a young woman.'A whirlwind of encounters . . . a pioneer in melding art, poetry and science' Art Basel

The architect, professor, and author Uwe Schröder has shaped the debate on fundamental themes of architecture-topology and typology, space and aesthetics-for more than three decades with his clear, uncompromising stance. These two beautifully crafted volumes present, for the first time, his award-winning oeuvre in its entirety: buildings and designs with numerous photographs and drawings, as well as the key texts Schröder has written over the years and his Raumentwurfslehre (theory of spatial design). The books open with essays by Bonn-based architecture journalist David Kasparek, who also compiled the complete chronology of Schröder's work. When viewed together, a fascinating picture emerges of the reciprocal influences of building, thinking, and teaching-disciplines so often regarded as separate.Vol. I covers the years 1992-2014, vol. II covers the years 2015-2025. The books are available as a set consisting of volumes I-II. The individual volumes can also be purchased separately.

First comprehensive monograph on the influential Bonn-based architect and professor

Award-winning buildings such as the Wohnhöfe Auerberg, the Haus auf der Hostert, and the Hochzeitsturm Plüderhausen

Explores the reciprocal relationship between architectural theory, architectural practice, and design theory

Chromed Columns Abu Dhabi
is an artist's book in which sculptor Sandra Peters focuses on an architectural detail in the urban environment in which she lives and works. These are chrome-mirrored columns that are ubiquitous in downtown Abu Dhabi, but also characterize the urban landscapes of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) beyond. In everyday perception, the chrome-mirrored columns on the facades of buildings remain inconspicuous, even virtually invisible; only when isolated thematically do they come into consideration as significant elements of the urban environment, which they absorb like convex mirrors.

The photographic documentation of her urban environment is an integral part of Peters' artistic practice. She often develops sculptural works from her observations. In
Chromed Columns Abu Dhabi
, she reverses this relationship: the columns in the urban space of Abu Dhabi are architectural details, but Sandra Peters isolates them photographically and thematically as elements that have sculptural potential. She has selected 51 photographs for her publication. These are presented as a series of full-page illustrations. Further contexts for viewing the photographs are provided by an introductory text by the artist and an essay by architect and urbanism researcher George Katodrytis.

The first book from AD100 and Elle Decor A-List designer Huh is filled with her elegant, colorful work, while inspiring readers to create different moods at home. Acclaimed designer Huh’s warm and welcoming interiors resonate with harmony, elegance, and dynamism, each room animated by sophisticated surface treatments, a singular play of pattern and color, and a touch of wanderlust. Her first book, composed of three distinct sections, is perfect for readers searching for sophisticated inspiration. Part one, A Mood, looks at decoration through the lens of mood: convivial, peaceful, joyful, cozy, verve, romantic, meaningful. For example, convivial spaces are ones that feel buzzy, excited, and alive, like an artist’s salon; they use lighting to draw people together and seating arrangements to connect. Peaceful interiors are refuges made for reading with a cup of tea on a rainy day, surrounded by warm, natural textures and quiet colors. The second part of the book, A Thought, features three full houses recently completed by Huh, including a chic forever home, an old house full of whimsy, and an airy Park Avenue penthouse. The final section of the book, A Feeling, is about Young’s own recently completed historic country house in upstate New York, from the pattern-filled rooms to the gardens and grounds, with images of life through the seasons. Together, these three sections make for a uniquely personal and beautiful book.

The first book from AD100 and Elle Decor A-List designer Young Huh is filled with her elegant, colorful work, showcasing four full houses including her house upstate, while inspiring readers to create different moods at home, from convivial to cozy, peaceful and more.
