Kaum etwas prägt das kulturelle Leben so sehr wie Kaum etwas prägt das kulturelle Leben so sehr wie der Film. Und kaum etwas prägte das Leben in der DDR so wie die DEFA. Angefangen vom Film-Aktiv entwickelte sie sich ab 1946 schnell zu einem der größten und führenden Filmproduzenten im gesamtdeutschen Maßstab. Dies allerdings ging alles andere als reibungslos vor sich; eine ganze Reihe führender Köpfe der Anfangsjahre wurde regelrecht verschlissen. Anlässlich des 80. Jubiläums ihrer Gründung beschäftigt sich der Dokumentarfilmer und Filmhistoriker Günter Jordan nun mit einigen dieser Fälle und erzählt sie als regelrechte Polit-Krimis. Wo liegen die Ursachen? Was waren die Hintergründe? Welche Folgen hatte all das? Jordan geht diesen Fragen nach und berichtet detail- und kenntnisreich; dem Leser sei dazu das seinerzeitige Motto des DEFA-Augenzeugen ans Herz gelegt: 'Sie sehen selbst - Sie hören selbst - Urteilen Sie selbst!'

Memory, Subjectivity and Independent Chinese Cinema provides a historically informed examination of independent moving image works made between 1990 and 2010 in China. Showcasing an evolving personal mode of narrating memory, documenting reality, and inscribing subjectivity in over sixteen selected works that range from narrative film and documentary to experimental video and digital media (even including a multimedia avant-garde play), this book presents a provocative portrait of the independent filmmakers as a peculiarly pained yet active group of historical subjects of the transitional, post-socialist era. Through a connected investigation of cultural and cinematic concepts including historical consciousness, personal memory, narrative, performance, subjectivity, spatiality, and the body, Wang weaves a critical narrative of the formation of a unique post-socialist cultural consciousness that enables independent cinema and media to become a highly significant and effective conduit for historical thinking in contemporary China. Covering directors such as Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige, Jia Zhangke, Jiang Wen, Lou Ye, Meng Jinghui, Wang Bing, Wang Guangli, Duan Jinchuan, Cui Zi'en, Shi Tou, and Tang Danhong, this book is essential reading for all students and scholars in Chinese film.

Memory, Subjectivity and Independent Chinese Cinema

Hans Schifferle (1957-2021) schrieb sein Leben lang über Filme. Sein Verhältnis zum Kino war von existenzieller Natur. Er wollte Kino erleben und nicht nur Filme schauen.
Hans Schifferle akzeptierte keine Genregrenzen und fand auch in vermeintlich zweit- und drittklassigen Filmen einen Reichtum, den andere nur in anerkannten Klassikern sehen wollten. Dank seines immensen film- und kulturhistorischen Wissens, seines Stilbewusstseins, seiner analytischen Fähigkeiten und nicht zuletzt seiner konzentrierten Hingabe an den jeweiligen Film entstanden unter seiner Autorenschaft Filmkritiken und Essays, die lustvoll zu lesen sind und den cineastischen Horizont erweitern. Prägend für Schifferles Akkulturation war die Münchner Kinoszene der 1980er Jahre, als mit dem Filmmuseum und dem Werkstattkino zwei außergewöhnliche Bildungsstätten auf sich aufmerksam machten, ein "Living Cinema", das darüber hinaus eine neue Generation von Filmkritikern hervorbrachte. Schifferle veröffentlichte reichhaltig und breit gestreut: Er schrieb für die "Süddeutsche Zeitung", den "Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger", für "epd Film", diverse Stadt- und Lifestyle-Magazine, er publizierte in Filmbüchern, Festivalkatalogen, in Publikumszeitschriften und cinephilen Spezialjournalen. Der vorliegende Band enthält zahlreiche Texte von Hans Schifferle, Fotos und Dokumente sowie einen Essay von Ulrich Mannes.

Der Band rekonstruiert anhand zahlreicher Originalmaterialien - darunter Fotografien, Filme, Zeitungen, Bücher und Filmkostüme - den "corpo" Pasolinis. Sie zeichnet dessen Schaffen und Gedankenwelt nach und widmet sich dem visionären Leben und Werk des Regisseurs, Dichters und Denkers. Pasolinis radikale Diversität und seine Auflehnung gegen soziale Konventionen haben innerhalb der italienischen Gesellschaft der 1950er bis 1970er Jahre stets Anstoß erregt. Er provozierte vor allem durch seine Mitgliedschaft in der Kommunistischen Partei und durch seine offen gelebte Homosexualität. Ihm widerfuhr öffentliche Verhöhnung bis hin zu gerichtlicher Verfolgung. 1975 wurde er unter nicht ganz geklärten Umständen ermordet. Die Publikation zeichnet eine Chronik dieser Ereignisse und führt die Brutalität von Pasolinis Verfolgung vor Augen. Sie dokumentiert die systematische Diskriminierung eines Andersdenkenden, der zwischen Gerichtssälen, Straßenangriffen, Zensur und Spott den Körper der Freiheit besang.
