Coulisse d'un défilé de mode

This landmark collection provides new insights, concepts and techniques to understand and respond to tort claims based on illegal conduct. It is the first comparative study of this difficult field, which has remained contested despite numerous decisions of the highest courts in the common law world. The collection draws on scholars from common law and civilian jurisdictions spanning Argentina, Australia, Brazil, England and Wales, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Scotland, Singapore, Spain, South Africa and Sweden. Together they set out fact patterns, and justifications for tort liability to illustrate the coherence and unity that exists when courts address such claims. While common law legal systems have developed a specific defence of illegality for some of those fact patterns, civilian jurisdictions tend to see illegality operating, if at all, through the existing components of tort liability. The book explains how these different approaches have been reached, how they work, and what they reveal about reasoning in tort.

"Fair and just?"

An ode to the quiet joy of collecting more books than we could ever possibly read - and loving them all the same... Drawing on the evocative Japanese term tsundoku - first coined in the Meiji era to describe the growing stacks of unread books that accumulate around devoted readers - this insightful and warmly humorous book reframes what some might see as clutter or guilt as a deeply meaningful way of living. From the tactile pleasure of flipping through pages to the quiet ritual of rearranging overflowing shelves, Tsundoku explores the psychology, culture, and poetry behind the irresistible urge to collect and cherish books. It offers meditations on the joy of choosing and buying books, the rebellion against reading lists, creative ways to organise your shelves, foolproof excuses for sneaking in yet another new title, techniques for remembering what you've read, and the guilty - but glorious - pleasure of re-reading. Above all, this philosophy reminds us that we do not necessarily have to have read all the books we own to love them unconditionally. Feelings of guilt, be gone! Unread books can be even more fascinating because they take us on wonderful journeys, and speak to us regardless, whether we open them or keep them closed. We know that books are a cure for the soul: just touching one, smelling one, or leafing through one makes us feel better immediately.

Verso's Southern Questions

In 1960, as the Algerian War for Independence entered its sixth year, 22-year-old Djamila Boupacha was arrested for allegedly planting a bomb in a university cafeteria. While in custody, she was tortured and raped by French soldiers. Her case would have been buried like countless others had it not been for the efforts of her lawyer, Gisèle Halimi, and the philosopher Simone de Beauvoir to transform it into an international cause célèbre. Djamila Boupacha is the culmination of this campaign to expose the systemic violence of colonial rule. "To protest in the name of morality against ‘excesses’ or ‘abuses,’" Beauvoir writes, "is an error which hints at active complicity. There are no ‘abuses’ or ‘excesses’ here, simply an all-pervasive system." More than a historical document, the book is a profound exploration of morality, complicity and resistance. A classic text of anticolonialism, this is a story that demands to be read—and remembered.

A collection of eye-opening natural experiments, showing how economists uncover cause-and-effect relationships and reveal insights about our world. Does having a daughter change how a congressperson votes? How did a nineteenth-century doctor help discover germs? Is it better to go first or second in a penalty shootout? Why don’t diplomats pay their parking tickets? Do leaders really matter? These are all questions economists ask. Some of these questions are serious, others less consequential. But all are interesting—and can be answered by way of the natural experiment. A natural experiment is an event in the real world that neatly divides people into a treatment and control group—and it is one of the greatest tools in the economist’s toolkit. In Daughters, Diplomats, and Death, Patrick Gourley discusses why and how economists have leveraged this powerful method to answer questions that were long thought unanswerable. In the vein of Freakonomics, Nudge, and The Tipping Point, the book takes the reader on a lively and engaging tour of some of the most fascinating natural experiments, explaining how they work, how they help social scientists answer questions, and what conclusions they reached. The experiments illuminate a wide range of timely issues in health, education, reproductive issues, and the environment, lending rich and much-needed nuance to the complex debates that shape today’s headlines.

What does it mean to be governed and what does it mean to resist? Examining how communities form amidst social and political turbulence, this open access book presents four case studies that demonstrate the power of organic social formations over imposed order. Understanding this formation of community in terms of 'ungovernability' and a 'poetics of resistance',Ungovernable Spaces charts a movement from oppression, through transformation, into imagining, and finally emergence. Throughout the book, the authors engage methods of situated practice and related modes of writing and image-making to consider a range of global case studies: the destruction of the Mecca apartment building in Chicago's South Side in 1952, following a decade of resistance from the building's predominantly African American occupants; M.K. Gandhi's practices of social activism including the Salt March protest of 1930, and the daily practice of spinning and intermittent fasts; the Ciudad Abierta (Open City), a radical pedagogical experiment started by a poet and an architect in Valparaíso, Chile in 1970; and, finally, the urban ecologies developing on either side of Belfast's 'peace walls' in the wake of the Troubles and 1998's Good Friday Agreement. Structured via four spatial configurations - the grid, the charkha, the constellation, and the cluster -each case study explores community formation through artistic and aesthetic practices that resist and unsettle forms of hegemonic order. A truly interdisciplinary work at the intersection of poetry, art and spatial practice, Ungovernable Spaces argues for the importance of ethics, aesthetics, imagination and ecology in developing, of necessity, a new poetics of 'us.' Flannery O'Connor on Writing

A fresh interpretation of the Enlightenment that reshapes our understanding of political economy and its intellectual foundations. The origins of political economy are often told as a story of increasing certainty, rationality, and scientific progress. But what if its earliest thinkers were instead preoccupied with uncertainty? In Doubtful Knowledge, Richard Adelman offers a striking new interpretation of eighteenth-century political economy by tracing its roots to the skeptical philosophy of the European Enlightenment.Moving between Scotland and France, Adelman reveals how figures including David Hume, Adam Smith, Denis Diderot, Jean Le Rond d'Alembert, François Quesnay, and the Physiocrats developed a shared understanding of the limits of human knowledge. Rather than presenting markets or societies as systems that could be fully understood or controlled, they emphasized the complexity of the social world, the fallibility of human judgment, and the need for intellectual humility. Through close readings of major philosophical and political-economic texts, Adelman demonstrates that skepticism was not peripheral to early political economy but fundamental to its emergence. Challenging long-held assumptions about the history of economics and Enlightenment thought, Doubtful Knowledge reframes debates about commerce, governance, progress, and human nature.By bringing together intellectual history, literary studies, philosophy, and the history of political economy, Adelman offers a compelling account of how eighteenth-century thinkers understood knowledge itself--and why their questions remain relevant to contemporary discussions about economics, politics, and the limits of expertise.
