Since its initial 2011 publication, Theory from the South has stimulated a new field of inquiry from leading scholars, while world developments have escalated and supported its original thesis of how "Euroamerica has evolved toward Africa." Not least of these is the many resemblances of the Trump presidency to that of Jacob Zuma, transformations in the nature of many of the world's Northern democracies, the rise of populist politics, the intensifying hold of private capital over functions of the state, sharpening inequalities, and the transformation of labor. In a new chapter for this expanded edition, the Comaroffs extend their theorizing around and beyond these new developments. This open access book proposes slow memory as a new framework for understanding how remembrance operates across time, urging scholars and practitioners to resist the acceleration that characterizes both contemporary scholarship and public memory cultures. The authors explore the theoretical foundations of slow memory in relation to environmental humanities and Indigenous studies, emphasizing themes of deep time, intergenerational justice, and contested memory regimes. The collection focuses on the fields of environment, (de)industrialization, welfare, politics, and conflict to examine how gradual transformations impact the present through remembrance practices at different tempos. It advocates for a deceleration of scholarly and commemorative practices to develop ethical, sustainable, and inclusive engagements with the past. By foregrounding slowness as a conceptual and methodological tool, and slow memory as a "connective concept," this book offers a vital framework for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to rethink the temporalities of remembrance in an era of rapid transformation. This book aims to explore possible solutions to the climate crisis through the tools provided by law, with particular emphasis on tax law. In a rapidly changing and constantly evolving society, taxation assumes increasing importance, as exchanges become as swift and complex as the connections that bring people closer together. Tax law permeates every activity involving an exchange, including those conducted remotely.The chapters follow a linear progression, moving from description to the proposal of concrete solutions. The analysis begins with an examination of the status quo, paying particular attention to the warnings raised by academics who have long highlighted the challenges posed by climate change and emphasized the need for a just transition. The discussion then turns to the issue of taxonomy, which plays a crucial role both in taxation and in green finance.Subsequently, the book explores the opportunities offered by well-designed labor taxation, especially in relation to the development of green jobs.
