Cecily Brown. Picture Making

Ausst. Kat. Serpentine North, London

Picture Making, responds to the location of Serpentine in Kensington Gardens and brings together new and recent paintings, drawings and monoprints on the theme of nature and park life. These themes have longed shaped Brown's formal explorations, which are characterised by vigorous brushwork, a vivid sense of colour and dynamic all-over compositions that hold the viewer in an active space of looking. For the exhibition  Brown revisits familiar subjects such as amorous couples, woodland settings and uncanny nature walks. The exhibition makes a homecoming for the British artist who has lived and worked in New York for the past thirty years, touching on her early memories of the English landscape. A series of drawings has been inspired by her interest in children's book illustrations, and the darker side of nursery rhymes and cautionary tales.
