Brings Connecticut suffragist and socialist Emily Pierson out of the shadows, exploring her role in the social and political movements that shook America from the 1910s to the Cold War.At once the story of a largely forgotten local firebrand of left politics in Connecticut, Yankee Radical chronicles the life and activism of Emily Miller Pierson. Born in Cromwell, Connecticut, Pierson was the scion of a wealthy family that owned an industrial-scale horticultural firm. After graduating from Vassar College in 1907, she immersed herself in the suffrage movement, becoming the primary ground-level organizer and strategist in her state. During the 1930s, she raised her political involvement to a new level, as Connecticut's most prominent supporter of the Communist Party and the Soviet Union, and later China. Her activities as a spokesperson, leader, and "financial angel" of the left over three decades earned her FBI surveillance and a spot on the US government's Security Index for possible detention. Still, she clung fiercely to her radical beliefs up until her death at the age of eighty-nine. Drawing on Pierson's papers and FBI file, Richard Lenzi offers an in-depth look at the political and social setting in which Pierson operated, from the development of industrial unionism in the state to McCarthyism and the Cold War.

While mainstream international legal scholarship has long treated race as a peripheral concern-or a historic injustice to be remembered but not redressed-this volume argues that racialisation is foundational to the discipline, underpinning its doctrines, epistemes, and interlocutors. Emancipating International Law explores the many ways racial hierarchy, systemic oppression, and global white supremacy shape international law. Bringing together leading and emerging scholars, the collection moves beyond qualifying whether international law is racist to explore how racial hierarchies are embedded in its structures and continue to evolve through legal and institutional practice. Divided into five sections, the book begins by situating international law's racialised boundaries within its colonial, capitalist, and chauvinist afterlives, exposing how white ignorance and race-thinking underpin legal norms, from sovereignty to jus cogens. It then examines racial stratification across legal institutions, including investment law, refugee law, and the Genocide Convention. The third section extends this critique to human rights, revealing the ways in which even an emancipatory paradigm can bolster racial injustices. The penultimate section unpacks racial hierarchies in disparate societies, including Brazil, India, and Japan, as well as the frontiers of nation-states. The volume concludes with a powerful discussion of the role of activism and alternative epistemologies in racial justice struggles, and the limits of international law's capacity for anti-racist transformation. They manufacture extraordinary events, curate their lives for us to consume, and play on our emotions to draw us in. But relying on only the picture perfect, the pristine, and the prestigious a la 'aspirational' role-modelling is fast becoming stale to audiences in this very saturated space. Enter the use of 'online drama' to wrestle for the attention spans of audiences, when social media actors use discursive and visual narratives centred on angst, shock, fear, shame, pity to generate visibility, yield interest, and provoke conversations in the gladiatorial arena of social media. Translation, Interpreting and Social Justice in a Globalised World

This book explores how minority language users experience access to justice and the right to a fair trial when they use their language in the criminal justice system. It investigates the lived experiences of Irish speakers and deaf Irish Sign Language users who have directly interacted with the criminal justice system. Treating identity as both internally constructed and externally imposed, it focuses on the issues raised when internally constructed identities are misunderstood, oversimplified and misused by the majority or the authority. The two case studies presented here investigate three layers of access to justice: procedural access, substantive access and symbolic access. This lens reveals the areas where, in spite of legal protections to safeguard fairness, minority language users still experience unequal treatment.
