Routledge Studies in the History of Marketing

This book addresses the need to understand marketing practices in the context of the rich and varied history of India. Such an understanding will not only enrich marketing as a discipline, but also provide marketers and academics with valuable insights into the cultures and behaviors of Indian consumers. By analysing historical writings on business in India over 2000 years, and providing a coherent narrative of the marketing practices during these periods, it critically engages with the larger socio-economic structures which influenced, and were influenced by these practices. All scholars of marketing history will find this a fascinating and unique assessment of a highly significant market.

The concepts and practices of marketing, as well as the ideologies that impel these, are rooted in specific social and cultural contexts, predominantly those of the USA, and Europe. Moreover, the Western dominance of marketing thought permeates it with Western values such as individualism and rationalism. This has led to important contexts outside these traditions such as India being overlooked. India has an enormously rich and varied culture and history, and this book addresses the need to understand marketing practices within this diverse context. Such an understanding will not only enrich marketing as a discipline, but also provide both Western and Indian marketers and academics with valuable insights into the cultures and behaviors of Indian consumers. By analysing historical writings on business in India from the BCE period to the current period, and providing a coherent narrative of the marketing practices during these periods, it critically engages with the larger socio-economic structures which influenced, and were influenced by these practices. History of Marketing in India

This is the first comprehensive analysis of Southeast Asian globalization and development since 1870. Interpreting over 150 years of Southeast Asian economic history, Gregg Huff traces the impact of a first period of globalisation from the 1870s to 1929, the effects of Japanese occupation during World War II and its aftermath, and a second wave of globalisation since the late 1960s. He uses vent-for-surplus, dual economy and plural society concepts and argues that the response of those in Southeast Asia to periods of transport revolutions, innovation and opportunity in the world economy translated into rapid export-led growth. Recent swift growth enabled Southeast Asia to start to 'catch up' with the world's leading countries for the first time in its history. Achievements include industrialization, genuine social progress and numerous large urban regions. Nevertheless, the book contends that Southeast Asian development in its 'miracle economies' remains incomplete.

Governing China in the 21st Century

Since 2015, China has actively promoted “third-party market cooperation” as a new model of international economic engagement. This approach brings together China, advanced economies, and beneficiary countries to jointly develop infrastructure and construction projects, moving beyond traditional bilateral cooperation framework. Official narratives portray tripartite cooperation as a “triple-win” arrangement that combines China’s manufacturing capacity, partner countries’ advanced technologies, and the development needs of beneficiary countries. While such cooperation promises risk-sharing, resource complementarity, and enhanced project quality, it also introduces new challenges, including higher transaction costs, divergent governance practices, and complex negotiations among multiple actors.
Addressing the central question of why stakeholders choose tripartite cooperation and how three-party collaboration shapes project outcomes, the book makes both theoretical and practical contributions. It integrates transaction cost theory, international relations theory, foreign direct investment theory, and infrastructure natural monopoly theory to advance a novel concept of “semi-internalisation.” The analysis provides policymakers, practitioners, and scholars with a framework to understand partner selection, interest alignment, and the evolving dynamics of one of China’s significant yet understudied innovations in global economic cooperation

It examines how diverse cultural practices, from life celebrations to death commemorations, have travelled with communities, evolved in new settings, and taken root in the UK. Through case studies from different community groups, spanning oral traditions, performing arts, social customs, and craftsmanship, this book illustrates how ICH becomes a vital part of everyday life, identity, and belonging within the UK’s multicultural mosaic.

This book examines the social and cultural meanings of mental illness and psychiatric hospitalisation in early twentieth-century Greece. Although Greek psychiatrists were trained in countries such as France and Germany, and followed general European models of psychiatry, they practiced within a different economic, social, and cultural context. By focusing on a country on the periphery of Europe, this book explores new dimensions of mental health care on the continent, and illustrates how European theories were adapted by Greek psychiatrists. The author presents case studies of two Greek mental health hospitals, Dromokaitio and Eginitio, both of which were situated in Athens, but treated patients from all over Greece. Exploring how patients came to be admitted to the hospitals, the book highlights the relationship between communities and mental health institutions, and thus, the interplay between society and asylum. It investigates both private and public discourses around mental illness and hospitalisation, bringing to the forefront patients, family members, state and local authorities, charitable organisations, and medical professionals. Combining multiple perspectives on psychiatric hospitalisation, this book provides a nuanced account of the history of mental illness and health care in Greece, and highlights the different purposes, limitations, and contradictions inherent in treating the mentally ill.

Why elite Chinese women find themselves caught in a cycle of burnout. Burnout Market Feminism explores the lives of elite urban businesswomen in the Internet Age. Burnout market feminism combines Han Byung-Chul's concept of the Burnout Society and feminist Li Xiaojiang's market feminism theory. To unravel the puzzle of how women in China have thrived in business despite state crackdowns on feminism, Ling Tang argues that it is important to examine the role of the market in postsocialist China and the evolving interplay between illiberal politics and a neoliberal economy. Drawing on multisited ethnography conducted primarily in Shenzhen and Hefei during the Xi era, the author looks at the multiplicity and nuance of the lived experiences of businesswomen and their negotiations with patriarchy across different sociocultural contexts, particularly their confrontations with hetero-patriarchal intimacy norms and male-dominated guanxi business practices. Despite following diverse paths, these women share a common pursuit of achievement and growth—a pursuit that paradoxically narrows their market feminist efforts and leads to burnout, as these negotiations are often reduced to contingent bargains within a neoliberal framework. The book also extends the discussion of burnout beyond that framework, incorporating feminist critiques of women’s burnout under patriarchy and postcolonial critiques of burnout within a rhetorically socialist authoritarian state.

Dabei gehen sie auf Quellen ein, die in unterschiedlichen Zusammenhängen zeigen, wie 'verwahrloste' Jugendliche zum Problem erhoben wurden, dem u.a. mit neuartigen Anstalten begegnet werden sollte.

 Die Autoren
 Horst Löchel
 ist Professor für Volkswirtschaftslehre und Co-Vorsitzender des Sino-German Centre an der Frankfurt School of Finance and Management. Er hat viele Jahre in China gelebt und gearbeitet und war Vize-Präsident des Shanghai International Banking and Finance Institute (SIBFI) und Professor an der China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) in Shanghai.
 Tim Jablonski 
 war wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Sino-German Centre an der Frankfurt School of Finance and Management. Er hat einen M.A. in „China Language and Economy“ von der Universität Würzburg und hat anschließend mehrere Jahre in China gelebt und gearbeitet. Seine aktuelle Forschung konzentriert sich auf Chinas Innovations- und Industriepolitik.
