Asylum, Work, and Precarity

Bordering the Asia-Pacific

Chapter 1. Introduction.- Chapter 2. Asia-Pacific: Regional reordering.- Chapter 3. Myanmar: at the margins of democratisation.- Chapter 4. Australia: border anxiety and threat perception.- Chapter 5. Asia-Pacific: Unfinished independence.- Chapter 6. Conclusion.

This is the incredible untold story of four women who helped win World War II by generating a wave of black propaganda. Betty MacDonald was a 28-year-old reporter from Hawaii. Zuzka Lauwers grew up in a tiny Czechoslovakian village and knew five languages by the time she was 21. Jane Smith-Hutton was the wife of a naval attaché living in Tokyo. Marlene Dietrich, the German-American actress and singer, was one of the biggest stars of the 20th century. These four women, each fascinating in her own right, together contributed to one of the most covert and successful military campaigns in WWII. Members of the Office of Strategic Services, their task was to create a secret brand of propaganda produced with the sole aim to break the morale of Axis soldiers. Working in Europe, across enemy lines in occupied China and in Washington D.C., Betty, Zuzka, Jane and Marlene forged letters and 'official' military orders, wrote and produced entire newspapers, scripted radio broadcasts and songs and even developed rumours for undercover spies and double agents to spread to the enemy. And outside of a small group of spies, no one knew they existed. Until now.

Asian Yearbook of International Economic Law

The Asian Yearbook of International Economic Law (AYIEL) 2025 addresses the rapidly evolving field of international economic law with a special focus on Asia and the Pacific. With the rapidly changing geopolitical situation, protectionist measures have been taken by many countries, which has caused significant impact on international economic governance. Given the importance of Asia and the Pacific, it is necessary to study on trade protectionism and its impacts especially from a regional perspective.

Hospitals, Patients, and Society

A Social History of Mental Health Care in Greece, c. 1900—1920

This book investigates the history of the Protestant voting blocs and associations in the Irish border counties of Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan, from 1920 to 2016. While there are many studies on the history of Irish Unionism and Protestantism, there has been a lack of research concerning the political history of the Protestant community in the border counties following partition. Many Protestant Unionists in counties Cavan, Donegal, and Monaghan felt betrayed by their six county counterparts breaking the Ulster Covenant in abandoning a nine-county Northern Ireland. However, the Unionist Associations of these counties evolved after the implementation of the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1922 and adapted to their new political environment by becoming ‘Protestant’ Associations. The author seeks to explore how these Associations were established, and how they reacted to political changes during the twentieth century. Arguing that Protestant Associations arose as a Unionist shock response to Ireland’s partition in 1922, the author demonstrates how they aimed to ensure their political representation and the maintaining of Protestant interests. Support for these associations dwindled over time due to demographic change, a decline in membership of the Orange Order, and the gradual erosion of Southern Protestantism as a separate political identity over the course of multiple generations. Shedding light on why these associations lasted until the twenty-first century, and then disbanded, this book examines how former Southern Unionists in the border counties evolved their political identity following partition.

Pathways to China’s High-Quality Development

China’s New Quality Productive Forces

Winner, The Lionel Gelber Prize

For decades, China's rise to power was characterized by its reassurance that this rise would be peaceful. Then, as Susan L. Shirk, shows in this sobering, clear-eyed account of China today, something changed.

For three decades after Mao's death in 1976, China's leaders adopted a restrained approach to foreign policy. They determined that any threat to their power, and that of the Chinese Communist Party, came not from abroad but from within-a conclusion cemented by the 1989 Tiananmen crisis. To facilitate the country's inexorable economic ascendence, and to prevent a backlash, they reassured the outside world of China's peaceful intentions.

Then, as Susan Shirk shows in this illuminating, disturbing, and utterly persuasive new book, something changed. China went from fragile superpower to global heavyweight, threatening Taiwan as well as its neighbors in the South China Sea, tightening its grip on Hong Kong, and openly challenging the United States for preeminence not just economically and technologically but militarily. China began to overreach. Combining her decades of research and experience, Shirk, one of the world's most respected experts on Chinese politics, argues that we are now fully embroiled in a new cold war.

To explain what happened, Shirk pries open the "black box" of China's political system and looks at what derailed its peaceful rise. As she shows, the shift toward confrontation began in the mid-2000s under the mild-mannered Hu Jintao, first among equals in a collective leadership. As China's economy boomed, especially after the Global Financial Crisis of 2008, Hu and the other leaders lost restraint, abetting aggression toward the outside world and unchecked domestic social control. When Xi Jinping took power in 2012, he capitalized on widespread official corruption and open splits in the leadership to make the case for more concentrated power at the top. In the decade following, and to the present day-the eve of the 20th CCP Congress when he intends to claim a third term-he has accumulated greater power than any leader since Mao. Those who implement Xi's directives compete to outdo one another, provoking an even greater global backlash and stoking jingoism within China on a scale not seen since the Cultural Revolution.

Here is a devastatingly lucid portrait of China today. Shirk's extensive interviews and meticulous analysis reveal the dynamics driving overreach. To counter it, she argues, the worst mistake the rest of the world, and the United States in particular, can make is to overreact. Understanding the domestic roots of China's actions will enable us to avoid the mistakes that could lead to war.

The Nine Magazines of Kodansha (1934) is the autobiography of the Japanese publisher Seiji Noma, owner of the Kodan Company, publishing several million-selling magazines and a daily paper. Born in 1878, Noma grew up in that period of rapid transition which joined old and new Japan - the wearing of swords by samurai had only been banned two years before his birth. Hereditary social divisions were collapsing, and the young Noma seized his opportunities to make his way in the new Japan.

?Brilliant' The Times ?Hugely informative and entertaining' New Scientist ?Put this at the head of your reading lists immediately' Eric Idle From the winner of the 2022 Royal Society Science Book Prize, a thrilling and thought-provoking account of the rise and fall of humankind. For the first time in over ten millennia, the rate of human population growth is slowing down. The global population is forecast to begin declining in the second half of this century, and in 10,000 years' time our species will likely be extinct. In The Decline and Fall of the Human Empire, Henry Gee shows how we arrived at this crucial moment in history, beginning his story deep in the palaeolithic past and charting our dramatic rise from one species of human among many to the most dominant animal ever to live on Earth. But rapid climate change, a stagnating global economy, falling birth rates and an unexplainable decline in average human sperm count are combining to make our chances for longevity increasingly slim. There could be a way forward, but the launch window is narrow . . . Drawing on a dazzling array of the latest scientific research, Gee tells the extraordinary story of humanity with characteristic warmth and wit, and suggests how our exceptional species might avoid its tragic fate. ?Like Jared Diamond meets Arthur C. Clarke with a dash of Douglas Adams' Philip Ball, author of How Life Works
