It opens with the Reconstruction era following the Civil War, then goes on to chronicle the pivotal events of the late nineteenth- and entire twentieth century. It summarizes events surrounding U.S. entry into two World Wars, the Great Depression of the 1930s, the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, the Civil Rights movement, and major events leading to the growth of the United States into the world's leading superpower.
