Studies in Contemporary Women’s Writing

"This excellent volume-the first book-length study in English on Despentes's writing-is rich, timely and insightful. Schaal's rigorous analysis contextualises Despentes's work carefully in relation to contemporary writing and thought, highlighting its intersections with gender theory, in particular. The book is the fruit of extensive knowledge of Despentes's work across several media and will be of interest to students and scholars in gender studies, literary studies and contemporary cultural studies." (Professor Natalie Edwards, Head of the School of Modern Languages and Professor of Literature in French, University of Bristol)

"Schaal's academic treatment of Despentes's work manages to maintain the appealing edge of the author's approach while exercising impressive critical astuteness. The book is thoughtfully considered: from the Reflexivity and Positionality Statement that opens the book to the pedagogically minded vast bibliography at the end. Grrrl Writing will appeal to scholars and students interested in Despentes, French feminisms, political fiction, and women writers in an increasingly self-reflexive literary economy." (Anne Brancky, Associate Professor of French and Francophone Studies, Vassar College)

"Schaal offers us a very exhaustive study of Despentes's novels from Baise-moi to Cher connard. The author engages with all current criticism (in French and English) to demonstrate the evolution of the politics and aesthetics of protest that Despentes's novels perform. Questions of social vulnerability and fragility assigned by (sexual or racial) identities are at the center of Schaal's reflections. This book is a must-read if you want to undertake research on the author Despentes and the French feminist protest novel." (Catherine Mavrikakis, Professor, Département des littératures de langue française, Université de Montreal)

When Virginie Despentes (1969) published her provocative debut novel Baise-moi [Rape Me] in 1994, no one could have anticipated how she would gradually become a literary, feminist, and punk icon. This book is the first to adopt a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to Despentes's novels and evolution as an author.

Using feminist, queer, literary, and punk theories, the book examines how Despentes has developed and refined her Grrrl writing in Baise-moi, Les Chiennes savantes [The Learned Bitches, 1996], and Les Jolies choses [Pretty Things, 1998]. The study specifically illustrates how her unique authorial politics, infused with punk, genre- and genderbending praxes, have provided an acerbic critique of a still largely heteropatriarchal French society. Despentes's Grrrl writing denounces how heteropatriarchy engenders and thrives on injustice and social inequities, but also how conventions at play in classic or populist literary genres can perpetuate oppression as well.

WINNER OF THE SUNDAY TIMES YOUNG WRITER OF THE YEAR AWARD 'A fascinating look at the impact of country home-making on the lives and work of Virginia Woolf, Sylvia Townsend Warner and Rosamond Lehmann. It's beautifully written, gorgeously produced, absorbing and full of insight' Sarah Waters, Guardian In Rural Hours, Harriet Baker tells the story of three very different women, each of whom moved to the countryside and was forever changed by it. We encounter them at quiet moments - pausing to look at an insect on the windowsill; jotting down a recipe; or digging for potatoes, dirt beneath their nails. Slowly, we start to see transformations unfold: Virginia Woolf, Sylvia Townsend Warner, and Rosamond Lehmann emerge before us as the passionate, visionary writers we know them to be. Following long periods of creative uncertainty and private disappointment, each of Baker's subjects is invigorated by new landscapes, and the daily trials and small pleasures of making a home; slowly, they embark on new experiments in form, in feeling and in living that would resonate throughout the rest of their lives. In the country, each woman finds her path: to convalescence and recovery; to sexual and political awakening; and, above all, to personal freedom and creative flourishing. In graceful, fluid prose, Baker vividly recreates these overlooked episodes, revealing how 'rural hours' defined the lives of three pioneering writers. In the end, she shows, their example is an invitation to us all: to recognize the radical and creative potential of rural places, and find new enchantment in the rituals of each day. 'Warm, perceptive, eloquent ... Like Baker's protagonists in their countryside boltholes I felt "socketed" by this book. I know I'll return to it again and again' Lauren Elkin 'A meditative exploration of renewal, visionariness, grievous loss, and love - cool and passionate, fragile and enduring' David Hayden

Rural Hours

Longlisted for the National Book Critics Circle Award Many worry that criticism is suffering from a crisis of authority. In a world where everyone's a critic, what is criticism for? Since her canonical essay "On Liking Women," the Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Andrea Long Chu has established herself as a leading public intellectual and a bold cartographer of the new landscape of taste itself. Authority brings together sharp, illuminating essays on everything from musical theater to sci-fi novels, as well as an acclaimed tetralogy of personal essays first published in the magazine n+1. Throughout, Chu defies the imperative to leave politics out of art, charging fellow critics like Maggie Nelson and Zadie Smith with complacent humanism and modeling how the left might brave the culture wars with both its faculty of judgment and its sense of justice intact. In two magisterial new essays, Chu offers a fresh intellectual history of criticism's crisis of authority, tracing the surprisingly political contours of the discipline from its origins in the Enlightenment to our present age of social media. The desire to recover some lost authority, she argues, is neither new nor particularly freeing. Rather than being taken in by an endless cycle of trumped-up emergencies over the state of our culture, Authority makes a compelling case for how to do criticism in light of the actual crises, from climate change to rising authoritarianism, that confront us today.

How a group of women set out to change the world

I dreamed with my eyes open. All the Corregidora women with narrow waists and high cheekbones and wide hips. All the Corregidora woman dancing. Blues singer Ursa is consumed by her hatred of Corregidora, the nineteenth-century slave master who fathered both her mother and grandmother. Charged with 'making generations' to bear witness to this legacy of abuse, Ursa must confront her family history after a fight with her husband leaves her unable to have children. Haunted by the ghosts of a Brazilian plantation, pained by the fractured relationships of her present, she slowly and firmly strikes her own terms with womanhood. No novel about any Black woman could ever be the same after this' TONI MORRISON 'Corregidora is the most brutally honest and painful revelation of what has occurred, and is occurring, in the souls of Black men and women' JAMES BALDWIN 'An American writer with a powerful sense of vital inheritance, of history in the blood' JOHN UPDIKE, NEW YORKER

The dangerous belief that granting women reproductive freedom poses a threat to "traditional" values is a myth that has long prospered in American politics, playing an especially vicious role in the development of totalitarianism in the West. How did such damaging ideas arise? In Reproductive Wrongs, acclaimed translator and cultural historian Sarah Ruden exposes how ideologies that oppress women and families in the service of power took hold. Ruden traces a sweeping history through her trenchant analysis of seven pieces of literature that, she argues, marked key inflection points across two thousand years. From propagandistic poetry written by Ovid in the early Roman Empire to the biography of an evangelical American "abortion survivor", Ruden lays bare how doctrines of control over women were invented and propagated.Scathing and vital, Reproductive Wrongs unearths the evolution of a right-wing radicalism that endures to this day.

Celebrate a vital work of feminism with this limited run special edition featuring the original cover created by Virginia Woolf's sister, Vanessa Bell, and the original text first published by The Hogarth Press. This book is among the greatest contributions to feminist literature of the past century - a brilliant attack on sexual inequality. A Room of One's Own is a witty, urbane and persuasive argument against the intellectual subjection of women, particularly women writers. The sequel, Three Guineas, is a passionate polemic which draws a startling comparison between the tyrannous hypocrisy of the Victorian patriarchal system and the evils of fascism. 'Brilliant interweaving of personal experience, imaginative musing and political clarity' Kate Mosse'Achingly relevant' Natasha Walter, GuardianWITH AN INTRODUCTION BY HERMIONE LEE
