From a necessary act of survival to some of the most disturbing crimes in history to its often sensationalized and misunderstood role in certain cultures, cannibalism remains a fascinating yet taboo topic. Cannibalism around the World features more than 100 reference entries that examine cannibalism from a myriad of perspectives. Readers will discover the important cultural, spiritual, and symbolic roles cannibalism has played around the globe, from the Catholic Eucharist to sacrificial cannibalism among the Aztecs to appease the gods to the practice of some Fijian peoples of consuming enemies killed in battle to absorb their strength. The encyclopedia examines well-known incidents of survival cannibalism, such as the ill-fated Donner Party and the starvation conditions of labor camps during World War II. Entries on high-profile criminal cannibals such as Jeffrey Dahmer are also included. The book also explores cannibalism in written and oral stories, such as the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel and the Native American myth of the Wendigo. Cannibalism's portrayal in pop culture is also discussed. Taken together, these entries offer readers a broad yet highly nuanced view of this controversial subject grounded in rigorous anthropological scholarship.

An Introduction

Offers an arts-based, storying, textual and visual lens on gender-based violence in the UK and Mexico. This book is a unique image-based bilingual (English and Spanish) book of textual and visual narratives of gender-based violence (GBV) in the UK and Mexico, framed with a critical commentary that sets these stories in the context of GBV in both countries. Visual and textual stories convey the 'felt' experience of GBV, engaging readers and audiences in the apparently mundane as well as the shocking. Such stories help contest the prominence of crime statistics in evidencing GBV, statistics which often distort experience and reflect and maintain exclusionary policies and practices, particularly for minoritised communities. The transnational project on which this book is based invited artists and creative writers from diverse backgrounds in the UK and Mexico to respond to lived accounts of GBV in comic stories, short stories, poems, 3D installations, fine art photography, painting and film. This book brings together these visual and textual stories and sets out a series of readings and analyses that seek to further knowledge on GBV in different cultural contexts. This book is open access under a CC BY licence.

The untold story of how America's brightest academic minds revolutionized intelligence analysis at the CIAIn the early days of the Cold War, the United States faced a crisis in intelligence analysis. A series of intelligence failures in 1949 and 1950, including the failure to warn about the North Korean invasion of South Korea, made it clear that gut instinct and traditional practices were no longer sufficient for intelligence analysis in the nuclear age. The new director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Walter Bedell Smith, had a mandate to reform it.Based on new archival research in declassified documents and the participants' personal papers, The Intelligence Intellectuals reveals the neglected history of how America's brightest academic minds were recruited by the CIA to revolutionize intelligence analysis during this critical period. Peter C. Grace describes how the scientifically sound analysis methods that they introduced significantly helped the United States gain an advantage in the Cold War, and these new analysts legitimized the role of the recently created CIA in the national security community. The Intelligence Intellectuals

Nafeesa T. Nichols analyzes how racialized and gendered spaces are presented in post-apartheid South African literature. Through the examination of four novels, Kopano Matlwa's Coconut (2007), Zukiswa Wanner's The Madams (2006), Niq Mhlongo's After Tears (2007), and Kgebetli Moele's Room 207 (2006), Popular Spaces in Post-Apartheid Literature highlights the interconnections between space, race, gender, and popular culture within the post-apartheid South Africa. Nichols not only explores how post-1994 literature attempts to represent the realities of the post-apartheid condition, but also reveals the innovative and radical contributions that these young authors of the early twenty-first century made within the literary world. This book mediates the dynamics and complexities of space in connection to race and gender, exemplifies the challenge of working with and in violent masculinist textual spaces, and conceptualizes the popular in connection with class, race, and gender struggles. Drawing on an interdisciplinary mix of Black feminist theory, feminist geographical perspectives, and spatial theory, Nichols provides a close reading of each of the selected texts, offering broader insights into the how Black subjects navigate various spaces of oppression. Through these novels, she shows how we are able to imagine the possibilities of liberatory spaces, celebrate local knowledge, creativity, the popular, and, most importantly, the beauty and resistance found in the everyday. In the end, this book contributes to the academic conversations that continue to take place surrounding gender, space, literature, and liberation in South Africa.
