Showcasing the diverse and memorable architecture and interiors of Camper shoe stores worldwide, designed by such luminaries as Gaetano Pesce and Shigeru BanFounded in 1975 in Mallorca, the Spanish footwear brand Camper is a fourth generation family business. Known for its sustainable, comfortable and often playful designs, Camper is continually inspired by tradition as well as modernity. The first Camper store opened in Barcelona in 1981. Today, there are more than 400 stores around the world, each with its own personality. In 2006, the brand named its store design initiative "Camper Together" as a nod to the collaborative approach taken with the architects and designers that it commissions to design its physical spaces. The often-forgotten global story of how the Confederacy lost its bid for sovereign nationhood In 1861, proslavery secessionists severed ties with the United States, launched the Confederacy, and readied their new government to join the international community as a sovereign nation. In The First Pariah State, Robert Bonner tells the story of how a transatlantic publicity campaign dashed Confederate hopes by ostracizing its rebellion as an immoral, global menace. The international anti-Confederate campaign built on existing antislavery themes but moved far beyond them. Improvised indictments circulated secessionists’ most incendiary words across the world. The Union and its foreign allies condemned the marauding Southern navy for disrupting high-seas commerce, violating civilized norms, and preparing for the resumption of the African slave trade. Abraham Lincoln and Senator Charles Sumner sought to convert rhetorical barbs and maritime anxieties into novel doctrines of international law designed to counter rogue regimes. And Union opinion-makers, including Black abolitionists, worked with European supporters to stymie the South’s naval expansion, war finances, and diplomatic efforts to gain formal recognition. International worries about the Confederate rebellion waned after U.S. victory, and the Southern pariahdom of the 1860s left few enduring traces in international law or overseas remembrances. In fact, over the next century and a half, the pro-Confederate “Lost Cause” mythology proved to be as powerful abroad as it was within the restored United States.

Bringing together diverse case studies and interdisciplinary perspectives, this open access collection serves as the first in-depth examination of queer and trans displacement in East Africa. The collection features original creative works by queer and trans diasporic writers and artists with first-hand experiences of displacement. The last decade has seen a sharp rise in state-sponsored homophobia and transphobia in East Africa. This includes discriminatory legislation, such as the widely condemned Anti-Homosexuality Act in Uganda, and government-initiated crackdowns, such as the 'anti-gay taskforce' launched in Tanzania in 2018. The politicisation of sexual and gender rights in the region is often presented as a moral crusade (i.e. a return to traditional/family values) and is enacted with the support of many religious and cultural leaders. It is within this context that an ever-increasing number of LGBTQI+ people are leaving their homes and seeking protection elsewhere. But East Africa cannot be reduced to a site from which LGBTQI+ displacement emanates. Several countries in the region act as either host countries or transit points, even as they produce LGBTQI+ refugees of their own. These complex social, political and legal dynamics make East Africa a productive site for theorising queer and trans displacement. The region offers insights into how, when and why LGBTQI+ Africans move, the social obstacles they face, and the different survival strategies they deploy. Despite this, research on East African queer and trans displacements remains sparse. Nafeesa T. Nichols analyzes how racialized and gendered spaces are presented in post-apartheid South African literature. Through the examination of four novels, Kopano Matlwa's Coconut (2007), Zukiswa Wanner's The Madams (2006), Niq Mhlongo's After Tears (2007), and Kgebetli Moele's Room 207 (2006), Popular Spaces in Post-Apartheid Literature highlights the interconnections between space, race, gender, and popular culture within the post-apartheid South Africa. Nichols not only explores how post-1994 literature attempts to represent the realities of the post-apartheid condition, but also reveals the innovative and radical contributions that these young authors of the early twenty-first century made within the literary world. This book mediates the dynamics and complexities of space in connection to race and gender, exemplifies the challenge of working with and in violent masculinist textual spaces, and conceptualizes the popular in connection with class, race, and gender struggles. Drawing on an interdisciplinary mix of Black feminist theory, feminist geographical perspectives, and spatial theory, Nichols provides a close reading of each of the selected texts, offering broader insights into the how Black subjects navigate various spaces of oppression. Through these novels, she shows how we are able to imagine the possibilities of liberatory spaces, celebrate local knowledge, creativity, the popular, and, most importantly, the beauty and resistance found in the everyday. In the end, this book contributes to the academic conversations that continue to take place surrounding gender, space, literature, and liberation in South Africa.

Cannibalism around the World features more than 100 reference entries that examine cannibalism from a myriad of perspectives. In a period of expanding representation for women and LGBTQI+ people in cinema, television and other screen media, Judith Butler's groundbreaking writing on gender and identity is more relevant than ever. This is the first book to focus on the ways in which film has shaped the influential philosopher's thought. Since the 1980s, Butler's theories - particularly on 'gender performativity' - have been widely used to analyse representations of gender on screen. And equally, Butler has turned to films that spotlight drag performances and transgender people to re-examine the materiality of gender identity. In Judith Butler and Film, author Temmuz Süreyya Gürbüz explains how Butler cites growing up in the movie theatres their family owned as formational to their understandings of gender and sexuality, traces the influence of films such as Paris is Burning (1990) and Boys Don't Cry (1990) on their work, and also considers the documentaries Butler took part in. Moving beyond established film theory, Gürbüz draws from recent trans film theory, and also includes a final chapter on the idea of cinema as a form of embodiment - connecting this phenomenological approach with Butler's interest in experimental, collective and avant-garde filmmaking.

Explores how Ray Petri and the Buffalo collective revolutionized fashion photography in the 1980s by blending subcultural style, radical diversity, and gender politics to create a new cultural template still influential today

Scottish-born, visionary stylist Ray Petri (1948-1989) defined the look and feel of radical 1980s magazines such as The Face, i-D, and Arena. Founder of the maverick Buffalo collective, Petri styled kilts with MA-1 flight jackets and Armani suits with Dr. Martens boots to create genre-defying looks that shook up London's subcultural scene from grassroots to high fashion. Harnessing the power of street style, sportswear, club culture, new wave, and dandyism, Petri's vision took the sartorial vocabulary of the perpetually displaced into the mainstream. His radical casting of Black and multiracial models, styling of men in skirts, and women cast as men was a retort to the prevailing aesthetic in contemporary fashion. Moreover, it marked a culturally reflexive, implicitly political approach to the relationship between fashion and identity. Challenging the policing of masculinity and sexuality in particular, Petri's imagery boldly toyed with the iconography of homoeroticism, employing the language of fashion in the activism for gay liberation against the backdrop of the AIDS crisis. The eclectic Buffalo circle included fellow stylist Mitzi Lorenz; photographers Jamie Morgan, Mark Lebon and Jean-Baptiste Mondino; model-muses Nick and Barry Kamen and a young Naomi Campbell; and musicians such as Neneh Cherry. Shaped by Petri, the Buffalo attitude is intrinsic to style culture today having since inspired legions of photographers, stylists, and designers from Kim Jones to Ibrahim Kamara, Martine Rose, and Grace Wales Bonner. The spirit of Buffalo lives on in the countercultural references, cultural diversity, and post-gender conversation that underlies the most powerful of contemporary fashion imagery. This book traces how Ray Petri and Buffalo created the template for modern fashion photography by advocating not simply for a new aesthetic but for a new cultural order.
