The untold story of how America's brightest academic minds revolutionized intelligence analysis at the CIAIn the early days of the Cold War, the United States faced a crisis in intelligence analysis. A series of intelligence failures in 1949 and 1950, including the failure to warn about the North Korean invasion of South Korea, made it clear that gut instinct and traditional practices were no longer sufficient for intelligence analysis in the nuclear age. The new director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Walter Bedell Smith, had a mandate to reform it.Based on new archival research in declassified documents and the participants' personal papers, The Intelligence Intellectuals reveals the neglected history of how America's brightest academic minds were recruited by the CIA to revolutionize intelligence analysis during this critical period. Peter C. Grace describes how the scientifically sound analysis methods that they introduced significantly helped the United States gain an advantage in the Cold War, and these new analysts legitimized the role of the recently created CIA in the national security community. Grace demonstrates how these professors--such as William Langer from Harvard, Sherman Kent from Yale, and Max Millikan from MIT--developed systematic approaches to intelligence analysis that shaped the CIA's methodology for decades to come.Readers interested in the history of the Cold War and in intelligence, scholars of intelligence studies, Cold War historians, and intelligence practitioners seeking to understand their craft's foundations will all value this insightful history about the place of social science in national security.

The Intelligence Intellectuals

This book examines 'womanhood' and 'race' not only as disputed, converging, and constantly changing categories and lived experiences, but also as interrelated and unequal subjectivities and social realties that shaped all early-twentieth century Puerto Ricans. It empirically documents just how significantly 'womanhood' and 'race' were inextricably intertwined in Puerto Rico between 1914 and 1945, a decisive period in U.S. expansionism and in the transformation of this island. Through a comparative analysis and description of specific subjects in early-twentieth century Puerto Rico—mostly Puerto Ricans from different races and social classes, but also some North Americans as well—the book demonstrates the extent to which 'womanhood' and 'race' are a more thorny, volatile, and unstable than is commonly acknowledged within Women’s History and Caribbean Studies. This is the first book that examines the relationships between women in Puerto Rico from divergent social classes and racialized positions by mostly focusing on the socioeconomic and racial inequalities among colonized women in Puerto Rico. This is in marked contrast with most Women’s History globally which mainly concentrates either on the lives of elite women or, at best, on the unequal relationships between colonizer- and/or European-descended women vis-à-vis colonized- and/or non-white women. In this book 'womanhood' and 'race' are not seen as separate, nor as already given, historically and culturally immutable 'things.’ Those are some of the lacunae this book transcends, primarily in the case of white-Creole women relative to non-white Island women and the images socially constructed of them in Puerto Rico, as well as for racially located Puerto Ricans more broadly. Within this context, the book enables a different reading of already known documents while demonstrating the importance of examining unused or forgotten bibliographical sources, some of them previously untranslated.Gladys M. An exploration of the relationship between early modern travel literature and English nationalism, this book's primary goal is to assess the response of early modern readers to the nationalist sentiments in Richard Hakluyt's Principal Navigations. Matthew Day contends that Hakluyt's collection shaped nationalist thinking, ideas, and notions of identity; and that it influenced nationalist policies and actions in a number of key areas, including politics, navigation, exploration and trade.

An exploration of the relationship between early modern travel literature and English nationalism, this book's primary goal is to assess the response of early modern readers to the nationalist sentiments in Richard Hakluyt's Principal Navigations.  Matthew Day contends that Hakluyt's collection shaped nationalist thinking, ideas, and notions of identity; and that it influenced nationalist policies and actions in a number of key areas, including politics, navigation, exploration and trade.    This study discloses the fundamental importance of early modern travel literature to nationalist discourses and their complex relationship with imperialism.  It is based on both printed and manuscript sources, and looks at literature ranging from the drama and poetry to government papers, personal letters, commonplace books, and minutes of trading companies.  As a reception history, it appeals not only to literary and cultural historians, but also to scholars of book history.
