This book examines the convergences, divergences and reciprocal lessons that the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) share with one another in developing the principles of private international law. The chapters provide a thematic understanding of the cornerstones of private international law in each of the BRICS countries: namely, (1) the procedure to initiate claims in civil and commercial matters, (2) the law that would govern such matters in litigation and arbitration, as well as (3) the mechanism to recognise and enforce foreign judgments and arbitral awards. Written by leading private international law scholars and practitioners, the chapters draw on domestic legislation and its interpretation through cases decided by the courts in each of these emerging economies, and explicitly cover the rules applicable in contractual and non-contractual concerns and issues of choice of court agreements. Issues around marriage, divorce, matrimonial property, succession and surrogacy are also addressed, considering the implication of such aspects through the increased movement of persons. The book is a useful comparative resource for the governments of the BRICS countries, legislators, traders, academics, researchers and students looking for an in-depth discussion of the reciprocal lessons that these countries may have to offer one another on these issues.

In works such as The Mask of Anarchy? and "A Philosophical View of Reform,? Matthew C. Borushko argues, Percy Bysshe Shelley intervenes in the reformist crisis of agency occasioned by the dramatic historical and political violence that characterized Britain during the Romantic period. He shows how Shelley's body or work reconceived the possibility of the political possibilities of art and explores the implications of Shelley's nonviolence for later artists and reformers such as George Bernard Shaw to Mohandas K. Gandhi.

From the French Revolution, Reign of Terror, and Napoleonic Wars abroad to the dramatic social changes wrought by industrialization and political agitation at home, the Romantic age in Britain was characterized by dramatic historical and political violence. As a result, the reform movement of the early nineteenth century faced a crisis of agency, in the wake of both Waterloo and Peterloo, that centered on the role of violence in the hope for social progress. In poems such as The Mask of Anarchy and political writings such as "A Philosophical View of Reform," Matthew C. Borushko argues, Percy Bysshe Shelley intervenes in this reformist crisis of agency with a highly original political program of nonviolence rooted in the redefining of aesthetics as the primary site for a critique of the violence of post-revolutionary Europe. Grounded in the dynamic historical contexts in which Shelley wrote and informed by twentieth-century theory, Shelley’s Romantic Nonviolence shows how Shelley’s body of work reconceived the possibility of the political possibilities of art and explores the implications of Shelley's nonviolence for later artists and reformers such as George Bernard Shaw to Mohandas K. Gandhi.

Explaining how nations and narratives have been the products of transnational, cross-border forces of migration and cultural exchange, this open access volume presents a global history of the basic ideas that govern our understanding of the modern world and highlight the power of narratives in world history. From the Enlightenment forward, the nation and other global concepts have been conjured and repurposed to manage and make sense of what we now call globalisation. The authors in this volume show how social categories such as empire, race and labour were the centerpiece subjects of collective narratives. For the past two centuries, the practices of shared storytelling aimed to make sense of how groups like nations fit in the wider world. This volume explores how they created bonding narratives for co-members of these groups and bridging stories to explain how groups should relate to each other through trade, war, peace, and other worldmaking processes. Narratives, Nations, and Other World Products in the Making of Global History

This book examines 'womanhood' and 'race' not only as disputed, converging, and constantly changing categories and lived experiences, but also as interrelated and unequal subjectivities and social realties that shaped all early-twentieth century Puerto Ricans. It empirically documents just how significantly 'womanhood' and 'race' were inextricably intertwined in Puerto Rico between 1914 and 1945, a decisive period in U.S. expansionism and in the transformation of this island. Through a comparative analysis and description of specific subjects in early-twentieth century Puerto Rico—mostly Puerto Ricans from different races and social classes, but also some North Americans as well—the book demonstrates the extent to which 'womanhood' and 'race' are a more thorny, volatile, and unstable than is commonly acknowledged within Women’s History and Caribbean Studies. This is the first book that examines the relationships between women in Puerto Rico from divergent social classes and racialized positions by mostly focusing on the socioeconomic and racial inequalities among colonized women in Puerto Rico. This is in marked contrast with most Women’s History globally which mainly concentrates either on the lives of elite women or, at best, on the unequal relationships between colonizer- and/or European-descended women vis-à-vis colonized- and/or non-white women. In this book 'womanhood' and 'race' are not seen as separate, nor as already given, historically and culturally immutable 'things.’ Those are some of the lacunae this book transcends, primarily in the case of white-Creole women relative to non-white Island women and the images socially constructed of them in Puerto Rico, as well as for racially located Puerto Ricans more broadly. Within this context, the book enables a different reading of already known documents while demonstrating the importance of examining unused or forgotten bibliographical sources, some of them previously untranslated.Gladys M.
