The 'New' International Law

The rising volume of critique and commentary about the green economy is preceding a much-needed, global understanding of the concept: the principal aim of this book, accordingly, is to provide a detailed analysis of the emergence, anatomy and workings of the green economy. It traces the evolution of the contemporary green economy idea, interrogates the motivations of green economy strategies and explores how processes of economic-environmental change can be managed. The book draws on examples from across the Global North and Global South to contribute a more diverse understanding of the green economy, and provide useful case study material for students on a wide range of courses.

The ‘green economy’ has emerged in recent years as a ‘new’ concept in economic thinking and has quickly become embedded in mainstream policy and financial discourses. The idea of a green economy has been celebrated by those who see it as a welcome change to the organisation of global and national economies that will result in more ecologically sensitive modes of production and consumption. At the same time, the concept has been subjected to intense critique from several quarters, such as green NGOs and activists as another iteration of ‘business as usual’ or as a mask for capitalism’s continuing and worsening impacts on the environment. But this rush to either praise or condemn the concept, seems to have got ahead of developing a thorough understanding of what the green economy actually is in terms of its rationales, actors, modes, areas and sectors of operation. However, this rising volume of critique and commentary are preceding a much-needed, global understanding of the phenomenon of the green economy. Only then can we really begin to make informed assessments of its strengths, weaknesses and challenges. This book traces the evolution and emergence of the contemporary green economy idea, interrogates the motivations of green economy strategies and explores how processes of economic-environmental change can be managed. The book also provides a global overview of the green economy, drawing on examples from across the Global North and Global South. As much writing on the green economy has, to date, focused almost exclusively on Europe and North America, the book contributes a more diverse understanding of the green economy, and provides useful case study material for students on a wide range of courses.

The new macroeconomics is about distributions and flows, rather than points and intersections. Market frictions imply that the search for trading partners is time consuming and costly. Consequently, market participants flow between economic states, and trades occur at dispersed prices. This generates motives for continued search for better market opportunities, and for bargaining between potential trading partners. This volume takes the empirical analysis of markets with frictions to a new level by using unique merged registers from Denmark on firm accounting data, individual employee data, and international trade data to estimate empirically the relevant flow rates, dispersions, and relations among key variables of interest, including productivity, firm size, wages, exports, growth, and unemployment. The results serve to inform researchers and policy makers about the functioning of markets, justify the interpretation of dispersion and flows as equilibrium outcomes, and provide an understanding of cycles, adjustment, and potentials for public policy.

The new macroeconomics emphasizes distributions and flows rather than static points and intersections. Because market frictions make the search for trading partners time‑consuming and costly, market participants continually transition between economic states, and trades occur at dispersed prices. These frictions generate incentives for ongoing search and for bargaining between potential trading partners.This volume advances the empirical study of frictional markets by drawing on the unique&nbsp;merged Danish registers that combine firm accounting data, individual employee records, and international trade information. Using these rich data, it estimates key flow rates, dispersions, and relationships among central variables such as productivity, firm size, wages, exports, growth, and unemployment. The findings deepen our understanding of how markets function, support the interpretation of dispersion and flows as equilibrium outcomes, and offer new insights into economic cycles, adjustment dynamics, and policy design.

New Frontiers in Regional Science: Asian Perspectives

This book integrates diversified disciplines, research approaches, and methodologies of area studies, regional economic development, and regional science. With its huge population, China has accomplished rapid economic growth since the 1990s, although the significant income gap among regions and individuals has become a serious problem for its society. China's accession to the WTO in 2001 has had various influences on the entire food system, from agriculture to consumers, through the food manufacturing and distribution industries.
