Joss Marsh's stirring book traces the international phenomenon that is cinema's Dickens obsession, from its origins in Dickens's celebrity, through Dickens impact on the pioneers, first masters, and later innovators of the cinema and his enmeshment in the complex of technologies and cultural formations that made up the world of late-Victorian fantasy - from the photograph to the magic lantern, from celebrity to time travel.

As Joss Marsh observes in her stirring book on Dickens and cinema, Dickens was the first mass-mediated photographic celebrity of the modern era, more intimately "familiar" than any person in Britain besides the royal family. Suggesting Dickens's celebrity, as much as his work, contributed to the international phenomenon that is cinema's Dickens obsession, Marsh begins with  J. J. E. Mayall's famous celebrity portraits to trace Dickens's impact on the pioneers, first masters, and later innovators of the cinema. At the same time, Marsh uncovers a larger issue: to understand Dickens's place in cinema is to understand his enmeshment in the whole complex of technologies and cultural formations that made up the world of late-Victorian fantasy-from the photograph to the magic lantern, from celebrity to time travel.  Each of the six chapters unfolds a century-long cultural story that maps the Dickensian points of inspiration in the history of cinema. Marsh's cinematic geography of Dickensland transports the reader from Dickens's experiences with the early-Victorian portraitist's camera to Sunset Boulevard, Billy Wilder's remake of Great Expectations as a satire on the vampiric celebrity "celluloid self"; from actor-manager Martin-Harvey's 1899 manufacture of the "cast-iron" Victorian stage play to Dirk Bogarde's 1958 inheritance of the sacrificial gay role of Sydney Carton; from Charley Dickens Jnr.'s attempt to cash in on his father's knowledge of London to the history of production design as a medium of historical tourism and virtual experience; from Dickens's "impersonation" of Fagin, anti-Semitic and inherently theatrical, to the transformations of "the Jew" by Chaplin and David Lean and his musical apotheosis as magician and Pied Piper; from Dickens's 1868 return, in his last public reading, to the murder of Nancy to the contemporary slasher movie; and finally from the time travel enabled by the magic lantern's "dissolving views" through the role of Dickens's lantern-inspired Christmas tales of the 1840s in the lantern's development of pre-cinematic visual storytelling.  Informed by extensive archival research, deftly written, and beautifully illustrated, Joss Marsh's book shows film's fascination with Dickens was the trace of a persisting desire”fueled by decades of Dickensian impersonation and enabled by the medium's capacity to make still images live”to bring back the most extraordinary literary artist and personality of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries”to make Dickens live again.

The questions posed by disability studies scholarship are increasingly of interest to medieval studies scholars and there have been a wealth of books published on the intersection of these two fields of research over the past two decades. More recently, medieval scholars have developed a framework for considering more specifically medieval ways of thinking about disability, analyzing the medieval conception of the different or 'othered' body and thinking through 'medieval things': such as the responses to injury and resulting impairment in contemporary law, literature, and art; the impaired body as a site for miraculous transformation; the presence of physical and mental difference in different cultural modes than exist in the modern world; and the role of theosophical thought in characterizing difference. This is the first volume to survey this field as a whole, bringing together the most notable scholars in the field alongside up-and-coming academics, to analyse recent studies and to suggest directions for future research. Chapters are organized into four categories that treat broadly the current questions of the field as they apply to each contributor's area of expertise: Articulations of Difference; Critical Perspectives; Traditions of Medieval Thought; and Disability and Material Cultures. Each category is introduced by a leading figure in the field, and the volume is concluded with an Afterword.

The Ashgate Research Companion to Medieval Disability Studies

Positioning Henry James within his transatlantic and pan-European contexts, Peter Rawlings relocates James and the New Criticism's ideology of organicism in biology rather than in aesthetics. Rawlings argues that the novel as a genre anchored in the representation of character emerged from philosophical and scientific thinking about consciousness and experience that begins in the late seventeenth century and encompasses two hundred years of traffic between Europe and America. His ambitious study explores the significance of American thinkers and their European antecedents, from Jonathan Edwards to Josiah Royce, aligning James's 1884 essay "The Art of Fiction" with contemporary thinking on consciousness and its dense, ramifying aetiology. By this point, Herbert Spencer had extended Darwin's evolutionary thinking into the social domain, disrupting ideas about consciousness as allied with the soul even as the fin-de-siècle enthusiasm for panpsychism and the paranormal made a last stand against the New Sciences. A major contention of Rawlings's book is that Henry James should not and cannot be isolated from the urgent need to rethink what seminal critics such as Ian Watt and Marthe Robert have said about the procession of the novel from prose fiction. James's canonization by the New Critics motivates Rawlings's reexamination of Walter Scott, Jane Austen, Susan Warner, and George Eliot, among others, in the context of the vast range of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century European and North American philosophical, physiological, and biological discourses on which James drew in his theory and practice as a novelist.

"Entangled Displacements" offers a new way of exploring medieval cultures through the refugees they create. The book examines lyrical texts, romances and epics from Western, Northern and Southern Europe of the ninth to the thirteenth centuries to uncover a literary discourse of displacement. Early medieval poetry in particular allows us to glimpse how individual refugees negotiated their place in textual and political communities. From their solitary efforts at belonging, the book moves to shared forms of displacement and queries the possibilities of being-in-common in exile. While bands of destitute outlaws experiment with alternative forms of communal life in isolation, exiled warlords develop imperial ambitions through aggressive conquests and crusades. Both individual and collective experiences imagined in medieval literature reveal how crucially displacement intersects with other critical interests such as authorship, textual form, gender, and postcolonial perspectives. As the book's comparative, multilingual corpus shows, exile is not a marginal concern, but lies at the very heart of the medieval textual cultures we have reconstructed.
