Brings Connecticut suffragist and socialist Emily Pierson out of the shadows, exploring her role in the social and political movements that shook America from the 1910s to the Cold War.At once the story of a largely forgotten local firebrand of left politics in Connecticut, Yankee Radical chronicles the life and activism of Emily Miller Pierson. Born in Cromwell, Connecticut, Pierson was the scion of a wealthy family that owned an industrial-scale horticultural firm. After graduating from Vassar College in 1907, she immersed herself in the suffrage movement, becoming the primary ground-level organizer and strategist in her state. During the 1930s, she raised her political involvement to a new level, as Connecticut's most prominent supporter of the Communist Party and the Soviet Union, and later China. Her activities as a spokesperson, leader, and "financial angel" of the left over three decades earned her FBI surveillance and a spot on the US government's Security Index for possible detention. Still, she clung fiercely to her radical beliefs up until her death at the age of eighty-nine. Drawing on Pierson's papers and FBI file, Richard Lenzi offers an in-depth look at the political and social setting in which Pierson operated, from the development of industrial unionism in the state to McCarthyism and the Cold War.

Drawing on a range of diverse methods and a multi-disciplinary orientation, the book explains the past, present, and future of company law as well as its shape, structure, and trajectory. Company law is now understood to be a creature of statute law. The Companies Act of 2006 is a monumental piece of legislative work. Cases, however, played a central role in creating, establishing, and influencing legal ideas that were later enshrined within pieces of legislation. To identify the landmark cases in company law, the book develops an original, democratic, and objective method. It undertakes a citation analysis of cases used by 5 leading English company law textbooks. Highly cited cases are widely understood to be central to the company law curriculum. Once these cases have been identified, they are examined by leading scholars in company law. The analysis that follows sheds some much needed light on how, why, and when historic rules came into being. This contextual analysis is missing from the original law reports as well as the legislation that we see in operation today. It follows that these novel accounts of the roots of company law push beyond a simplistic narration of the case and proffer a new explanation for why legal rules took the shape that they did. Other archaeological studies also provide a fresh account of the case. Such an excavation informs the reader about legal advisors or the parties in the suit to explain why the litigation arose in this particular way, manner, or form.

African Women in Law is the first empirical study to offer a comprehensive and contextually rich portrait of African women in the legal profession. Drawing on 153 interviews across six countries, 249 survey responses from 21 countries, and secondary literature from 15 countries, this groundbreaking book explores the representation of women in the bar, bench, and legal academia. It traces historical developments, examines current realities, and sets the stage for future research. Introducing the HISP framework-History, Institutions, Social (norms), and Position(ality)-the book analyzes how structural forces shape women's roles in law. Through original concepts such as exclusion versus accommodation, racehorses versus workhorses, and the women's other-bar and other-bench, it challenges conventional narratives and highlights the diverse experiences of African women in law. The volume also builds on matri-legal feminist theory to offer a fresh lens for understanding gender and justice in African contexts. Rejecting essentialist approaches, the book argues that there is no single narrative of the lived experiences of African women in law. Mit dem Gesamtwerk steht dem Fachpublikum eine leicht zugangliche, bislang nicht gekannte Fulle von Dokumenten zur Verfugung, die fur die verfassungsrechtliche Entwicklung Deutschlands und seiner einzelnen Staaten von zentraler Bedeutung waren.
