An in-depth exploration of the network of agencies involved in policing child pornography—and what the future of security and care looks like. Facing the Child investigates the technocratic expertise in the policing of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Mitali Thakor argues that CSAM has come to be framed as primarily a digital problem, to be resolved digitally, thereby unleashing a new form of corporatized policing helmed by global technology companies. Ambitious in scope, this multi-sited global ethnography draws on four years of original fieldwork and interviews with technology companies in the US, the United Nations in Bangkok, Thai and Dutch NGOs, and law enforcement in the US and the Netherlands. The book argues that in the 2010s, a network of technology companies, NGOs, and law enforcement created the notion of a “virtual child” in need of techno-solutionist saving to justify a vast expansion of surveillance technologies. The book examines how pervasive myths of child abuse online were exploited to serve the aims of seemingly disparate groups, from Christian neo-abolitionists to NGOs conducting virtual sting operations. It is this complex relationship between the care and securitization needed to fix the child victim as an object of data, concern, and rescue that the book explores.

With AI making the decisions and CEOs and moguls making the money, sometimes it seems that most workers today might as well be drones. If not for a long string of missed opportunities over the last 50 years, it might have been different. In Roads Not Taken, Thomas Kochan reviews the turning points where the social contract fractured and broke, reducing workers’ voices as well as their compensation, benefits, and status. And in the lessons learned from these historical examples, he identifies the foundation for building a new labor relations system that ensures workers will share in the benefits from AI and puts America on course for an innovative and durable social contract at work. As a longtime advisor to government, labor, and management leaders, Kochan offers an eyewitness perspective on the mounting mistakes made in America’s labor relations system beginning, roughly, with Ronald Reagan’s firing of striking air traffic controllers in 1981. This book brings together key academics and practitioners from across the country, to provide a comprehensive reflection on the under-researched area of Australian military disciplinary law. It covers a broad range of topics on the nature of military discipline law, legacy issues arising from its historical origins, contemporary challenges regarding its application in the domestic and international domains, and likely future directions. The authors are all qualified Australian lawyers with varied backgrounds as civilians, reservists and current and former permanent Australian Defence Force (ADF) legal officers. The balance of authorship ensures that the collection as a whole reflects both the internal operation and culture of the ADF, and provides an independent, critical perspective on it. The issue of military discipline in both domestic and international settings has received extensive and ongoing media and public attention in the last decade. The public interest in the topic was apparent between 2013 and 2017, when investigations of the ‘Skype’ and ‘Jedi Council’ scandals revealed that male ADF members had been producing and sharing online footage of sexual encounters with women without the consent of the women involved, and accompanied by sexist and disrespectful commentary. The implications of discipline on overseas military operations were brought to the public attention in 2016, when the Inspector-General of the Australian Defence Force commissioned an inquiry into allegations that members of the Special Operations Task Group in Afghanistan breached the Law of Armed Conflict between 2005 to 2016.Dr Kellie Toole
