This short, concise book offers a theoretically grounded reinterpretation of American political development, integrating political theory, political economy, and intellectual history. Drawing on James Madison and the Scottish Enlightenment, and informed by Austrian economic thought, it argues that the U.S. Constitution is best understood as a spontaneous order: an emergent framework coordinating diverse actors through procedural rules, overlapping majorities, and checks and balances rather than fixed policy outcomes.

Set against this perspective, the book examines how European-derived frameworks – particularly classical liberal interpretations associated with Lord Acton – misread the American system and influenced modern conservatism. It distinguishes between constitutional conservatism rooted in rule of law and a Southern conservatism grounded in hierarchy, tracing their convergence through late twentieth-century political realignment. In extending Hayekian analysis to democratic institutions, the book contributes to debates in political economy, American political development, and complex adaptive systems.

Gus diZerega is an independent scholar of political theory whose work focuses on democracy, spontaneous order, and complex adaptive systems. He received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and is the author of Persuasion, Power, and Polity, an early application of Hayekian theory to democratic systems. A founder and editorial board member of Cosmos + Taxis, his research spans political theory, environmental politics, institutional analysis, and metaphysics.
