The Regulation of Embryo Testing in Australia

A Principles-based Approach

In the aftermath of WWII Australia undertook a number of war crime trials, and yet despite detailed records about Japanese military sexual slavery during the New Guinea Campaign, 'enforced prostitution' was not among the crimes prosecuted. This book asks why, when enforced prostitution was listed as a war crime, and both Australian and civilian authorities had reported the Japanese 'comfort women' scheme of military sexual slavery, its perpetrators were never called to justice. Bringing unpublished evidence to light, and employing both English and Japanese archival sources, this book describes the nature and extent of the trafficking and sexual slavery of women in the Pacific theatre of war, and connects it to sexual exploitation and violence in post-war Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Australia. Highlighting the ways in which cultural assumptions about Asian women influenced the perception and treatment of the so-called 'comfort women' by Australians, it argues that this prevented the prosecution of perpetrators for war crimes, and contends that these cultural assumptions have continued to influence the business, and tolerance, of sexual slavery in Australia today.

The Oxford Handbook of Philosophy of Medicine is a guide to areas of current activity and change, not only in philosophy of medicine, but also in medical science and practice. An in-depth look at the battles at Kokoda, Milne Bay and Buna-Gona, which saw the Japanese battle the Australians and Americans on Papua. The Japanese invasion of, and ejection from, the Territory of Papua was a six-month long campaign. From July to September 1942, the Japanese, having landed at Buna, advanced towards Port Moresby along the Kokoda Trail (or Track). They were opposed, at first, by Australian militia and later by Australian veterans of the war in North Africa. In September, a Japanese operation intended to support the advance was defeated at Milne Bay. By November, the Japanese had been driven back to their starting point, where, in a two-month siege, American troops joined the Australians to eliminate the Japanese beachhead at Buna. With detailed maps, colourful artwork and period images, historian and Kokoda expert Dr Peter Williams examines the strategies and tactics of both sides, along with the limitations terrain, disease and weather imposed on the armies. It also covers the struggles of the American-Australian alliance, both at high command and on the battlefield.
